I didn't really view whatever we spent finding the best college baseball fit for our son as a financial investment with a return in the form of reduced college expense... But I never thought of it as a cost/reward type of equation.

On target here! It's not cost/reward equation at all.

Maybe the only "reward" is improving skills enough to have choices for where you might get to play in college.

We never thought of it as a cost/reward type of thing.  Did it because we all enjoyed the game.  It wasn't until his soph year in high school did we realize the athletic scholarship possibility and what baseball may bring.  On both sides of the family nobody ever played college sports, he was the first.  We were putting our eggs into the merit scholarships previously.

Some points:

We made going to Atlanta/WWBA our vacation for 3 years.  However, while we were there, we did other things besides baseball: go-carting, bowling, governor's mansion, eating different places, historic cemetery (me), Kennesaw Mountain... including lots of DVD rentals one week it rained everyday.

Everyplace we traveled, we try to visit something historic or fun and eat at a good local place (usually bbq).  Kind of adding a mini-vacay to our baseball.  We continued this in to college ball and tried to go to as many games as we could.

You are going to spend SOMETHING on your kids for extra activities, whether it be soccer, ballet, swimming (ask some of those parents what they spend!).   Those poor travel swimming parents that travel for 2 nights then watch their child for 2.1 minutes then maybe again for 5! ouch.

Don't ever look at it as cost/reward.   The reward is watching your son play and develop! (And maybe finding a good bbq joint!)

mmmmmm....BBQ's   Keewart hit the nail on the head, besides the game finding local food hot spots is the 2nd most important event.  Spend a few days-week eating great food, diet the next 4 weeks.  That was my game plan.
