Many high schools are holding or preparing for the stressful tryout period. This is the first year I haven't had to worry whether my son would make the varsity team since he's a senior. I will be thinking positive thoughts for all your sons who are working so hard and hoping to make varsity. I remember how it felt for both my son and our family.
GOOD LUCK!

KC,

Who's worried, I'm not worried...just because my kid is a freshman at a new school with a new head coach. Who told you I was worried, did the coach say that... bothered nervous

kidding, of course, thanks for the good thoughts and good luck to your senior. Here's hoping he goes 4 for 5 the day the scouts are there, in the game for the district championship and all the hot chicks decided to come to the game that day. drunkard
I am new to the site and am very glad I found it. My son is a freshman in HS and is presently going through try outs. Our high school does not have freshmen team just jv and varsity. First cut was last Friday. He did well and the coach told him to step up and take on a leadership role. I did not think I would be anxious about the whole process of HS baseball, but it is a bit nerve wrecking. Can breath a bit easier for now. Thanks for all the good info and SUPPORT.
I thought I would be able to relax a little this year, but NOOOOooooooooo. Last year my oldest was a freshman trying to make a team loaded with returning Jrs and Srs, but he managed to squeeze in there and ended up with the #2 mound spot.
Though he's assured of making the team again (Coach has said it's up to him as the #1 starter this season), I find I am just as nervous as ever. I don't know why.
Maybe it doesn't ever go away!! Once your boy reaches the high school varsity level, then you start worrying down the road - will he be wanted by any colleges? It seems there will always be something to be nervous or unsure about. It always helps me, personally, to recall the words of Jerry Ford (PGStaff) who is often quoted as saying there are many more things more important than baseball. If Jerry can say it, I can believe it. It does help relax me - I think about future college classes, clubs, dances he'll talk about, wedding days, all that stuff. It does help keep things in perspective. Relax and enjoy. Whatever will be will be.

Yeah...I know what you mean...our oldest is a freshman in college...I lay awake most nights agonizing over whether we packed the big toenail clippers for him or merely the small ones without the nail file attached...geez I wish I could get some shut- eye.

do you guys know of any schools that require freshman to play only on the freshman team?

at our school, that was the rule with football. my son seems to think that is how it will play out with baseball. we were hoping he would have a chance to be the starting catcher on the JV team, but there may not even be that opportunity. bummer...
At my son's school that is the general rule. We have a Freshman, JV and Varsity team. Freshman play Freshman ball unless the player is a true standout. They can compete but the coach occasionally will allow one (just one) Freshman to make the Varsity squad, but never as a starter. This year we have no Freshman on the team. Juniors can only play Varsity. If they don't make Varsity they are cut. Not allowed to play JV. Freshman don't play JV either except to be occasionally moved up for a few games but are really rostered on the Freshman team.
well, we're not a big school. 1200 kids. not a very good sports program either. I'm just curious that its a "rule" that no freshman can play up.
I agree that if you can't start, its probably not worth it, and better to play everyday at the freshman level, but if he were good enough to start and be a major contributor to that team, why not??
imo, there may be several freshman from my travel team that is good enough to start on JV. I know that might sound like a homer opinion, but I know what the sophmore class talent/coaching/dedication level has been in the past with this group, and its not all that...

thanks!!
Around here it is only the Varsity program that gets noticed by anyone other then the players and parents of the Freshman and JV Teams. I believe that the emphisis for the Freshman and JV players is to learn how to become leaders and contributers in their respective programs. Each program needs quality players in order to win games and provide an opportunity for the better players to grow into the roles they will need to fill as they earn their way onto the Varsity program. So much of this game is about mental maturity. This is easier to develop the more playing time a kid gets and I think that if you are a strong player (as a feshman) it will help you to become a leader as you play with good to average players on your team. They will look to you for leadership. This will not happen for a younger player (freshman) playing with Juniors and Seniors. His opportunity to become a leader will be squashed by the older players.
At my son's HS Freshman and Sophmores play on the JV team (no Freshman team). Our Varisty team will bring up a Freshman only if he has superior skill. In 2005 season the starting 2nd baseman was a Freshman, but you would never know it from his play. My son a freshman has no interest in playing Varisty. He is more interested in playing with his friends (I guess that never ends) and getting plenty of playing time. He also said he might think about it when he is a Sophmore. I would worry the maturity level between a 14 year old and the 18's as far as girls, driving, etc.
