Hey guys! Recently I've been having some bad problems with patience at the plate. I've been so eager to hit, Ive swung at almost anything. I think I've swung on the first pitch 3 out of my last five at bats. Do you guys have any tips/drills for me to improve my patience at the plate?? Also, I always hit grounders for some reason. I hit it hard, but its always on the ground and straight to one of the fielders. Any tips for that as well??

I know most of the above posts have dealt with the mechanics of the swing and ground balls, so I won't answer that. Let me ask you this.

Do you have a hitting philosophy that is unique to you?

In other words, a plan of attack that is centered around your strengths as a hitter. Once you've got a plan, then you can work on changing your pitch selection that fits your strengths. Good mechanics and bad plan rarely work out very well.

If your plan up to bat is simply, "get a good pitch to hit." Then it's time to define what a good pitch is to you. The video below will show you how to develop your plate philosophy. I picked it up from Ted Williams' book and simplified it a little bit. Without a plan, mechanics matter little! Hope this helps. There is a brief into to the clip, just skip past it if you want to get to the meat.
