There were 186 players picked in the first round of those 4 drafts, and 105 of those have played in MLB. For the second round, the corresponding numbers are 55/125. So in the first two rounds, the success rate was slightly better than 50%.

For first round picks the criteria is not if they will eventually play MLB but rather if they are worth 'first round money'...

Good thing no one "showed" you Dustin Pedroia, Pedro Martinez, or Adrian Beltre.

I agree with YOU, Eckricelynnyaz....BECAUSE....everyone who is able to continue the journey is an EXCEPTION! They are EXCEPTIONAL athletes, have EXCEPTIONAL drive and abilities, and an EXCEPTIONAL love of the game! EXCEPTIONALITY can exist regardless of size!

You need to look at more than mom and dad too. I'm 5'10, my wife is 5'4. Using that logic my son should be about 5'10, maybe close to six foot when he grows up.

But...

My brother is 6'3". My wife's brother is 6'4". My dad is 6'1, my father is law, 6'3'. I have one cousing that was 7'1" and played at Purdue. I am the shortest guy in the family and the only male under the six foot. My son is 5'4 to 5'5 at 13 years old, at least four inches taller than I was at his age and puberty hasn't kicked in yet (he still has baby teeth) so it is impossible to tell at the pre high school age how big a kid is going to be.

So how many Pedroias, Martinez's and Beltres are there in the game? And they were probably jaw dropping studs who dominated every level until they played college or signed pro. For every 5'8", 5'9" player in the pros there are twenty who are 6'1" or taller. There are exceptions. But I still talk in terms of reality.

Here's some harsh reality for those even good enough to get drafted. 78% of all MLB players were drafted in the first ten rounds. 84% were drafted in the first twenty. 92% were drafted in the first thirty.
