My 14 year-old took two swings on separate occassions last Sunday and could barely run to first complaining of back pain.

When I described what happened and the symptoms, his doc immediately diagnosed it as Iliac Apophysitis which is inflammation in the growth plates of the hips.

Doc said he should be fine after a week or two of rest, ice and anti-inflams but my son is pretty sore. I plan to hold him out this week (no tourney) and next (tourney but he won't play) and then he gets an additional week during spring break.

Has anyone else had a son or daughter experience this? If so, was it a minor or severe injury and how long were they out?

Was this a sports specific guy, or a general ortho?

On my son's team last year there was a player who's arm hurt, his parents took him to a general ortho doc.  The diagnoses, growth plates, 2 weeks rest, ice, anti-inflamatories, and you should be good.  Kid waiting 2 weeks, came back, same pain.  The coach asked his parents to send him to a specif ortho that deals in sports...apparently the kid had a very slight dislocation of the shoulder.  Doctor popped it back in and the kid was good to go the next day!

Another thing you may want to look up is a pars fracture of the L5 or L4. My son went through this when he was 15 years old and could not  pitch for almost 18 months before we got him properly diagnosed and the treatment he needed.  As an 18 year old he had the same injury on the opposite side from swinging a bat (he was a lefty batter and a RH pitcher) . The difference was we got him PT and treatment right away and it was a short process to get him healthy again.

The injury my son had did not appear in an x-ray and only slightly showed in an MRI. What really showed it was a CT - scan.

Whatever you do you want to see a doctor who specializes in orthopedics. A GP or pediatrician may not be familiar enough to determine what is wrong. I went through 4 doctors before I found the answers we needed.
