Well...think these kind of deals remind me more and more.....it's not about the team, fans or loyalty in general.....it's about the money....and I'm not blaming the players, management or the union....individually.

As a die hard Yankee fan, it's going to be hard to root for Damon as a Yankee, especially after reading his self-titled book "Idiot". I'm not so sure the chemistry is right, and George and Johnny will have to have a serious heart-to-heart now in order to avoid trouble down the road. I predict a very rocky first two months for the Yankees......on and off the field. I'm not saying Damon's a bad guy or a bad player, in my opinion he's just doesn't have the Yankee mindset. I hope I am wrong with all this....
I am not a Yankee fan but I think Damon will be fine with the Yankees and watch his numbers go up with Derek, ARod and Sheffield hitting behind him

I am no Yankee fan either, but I do admire them from a distance. Getting to play for them is an honor. All the way into work, I was thinking what a great pick up this was for them. All he needs to do is what he has been doing. There are plenty of stars on the Yankees where he doesn't need to do anything out of the ordinary which is to get on base and score runs.
The rich always seem to get richer in life. What I take comfort in is the fact that even with all their resources and a 1 billion dollar franchise, they only average winning approximately one World Series out of every four played. I know the Cubs or Indians would like some of that, but it is still not a perfect science even with what appears to be unlimited resources.

I am a Yankee fan and I find this painful. Damon to me is everything a Yankee should not be. I hope I'm wrong, but I would rather an aging Bernie Williams than Damon. Hope my opinion is changed by Damon.
Look for Jeter to have a great year in the 2 hole. His numbers have always been tremendous batting second, basically because he uses the whole field and with a quality leadoff guy who can run, opens plenty of holes. His best years were hitting behing "Chuck". The end result was the few WS wins.
Lets just hope Damon isn't a closet Samson cause he's going to have to lose the beard and long hair.

Since they are paying him 13 million per year, I suspect they think they are getting the best lead off hitter or one of the best at least.
Randy Johnson, IMO, got off to a much shakier start than this. I like to see some humility in a player as well, but it is a fine line between confidence and arrogance sometimes.

I am not willing to blame an agent for a player's "memememe" hype. As you know his constant commentary here in Boston would be considered out of line by Torre and the boys.
Let someone else say what a great sign he was....not Damon himself. Agree with the thoughts of baseballdad and itsagreatgame.

Management will get lambasted by the media for fumbling Theo Epstein, Damon, among others (Pedro), probably rightly so, however Damons arm will play worse at Yankee Stadium, his best years are behind him.
He is a good lead off guy, but he is the biggest grenade thrower in the big leagues, getting older every day. I understand why they let him go.

arizonared, two things I have noticed about myself since mine got the chance to play professional baseball: 1.)being a fan,I love the game even more; 2.)from the day your son signs that contract you learn that, inside professional baseball, this is a business. I used to question the salaries. For some of the reasons described by Beenthere and bbscout in a different thread, and for others, including what happened in SFO with JT Snow, I now have absolutely no problem with Damon getting $52,000,000 guaranteed for 4 years and for him taking it. I am not a Damon fan, by any means. I am also not a fan of the process. Just have a better, but by no means, really informed, perspective on the process.

I think the Yankees way overpaid for Damon. I don't think he's all that good of a leadoff hitter. His on base percentage is barely in the top twenty. Isn't that the most important stat for a leadoff guy?
