Well...think these kind of deals remind me more and more.....it's not about the team, fans or loyalty in general.....it's about the money....and I'm not blaming the players, management or the union....individually.

As a die hard Yankee fan, it's going to be hard to root for Damon as a Yankee, especially after reading his self-titled book "Idiot". I'm not so sure the chemistry is right, and George and Johnny will have to have a serious heart-to-heart now in order to avoid trouble down the road. I predict a very rocky first two months for the Yankees......on and off the field. I'm not saying Damon's a bad guy or a bad player, in my opinion he's just doesn't have the Yankee mindset. I hope I am wrong with all this....
I am no Yankee fan either, but I do admire them from a distance. Getting to play for them is an honor. All the way into work, I was thinking what a great pick up this was for them. All he needs to do is what he has been doing. There are plenty of stars on the Yankees where he doesn't need to do anything out of the ordinary which is to get on base and score runs.

The rich always seem to get richer in life. What I take comfort in is the fact that even with all their resources and a 1 billion dollar franchise, they only average winning approximately one World Series out of every four played. I know the Cubs or Indians would like some of that, but it is still not a perfect science even with what appears to be unlimited resources.
Damon will have to change more than his hair!
His comments about himself in the press need to cease and desist Eek

"He always wants to have the best players, and I think he showed that tonight. He and Brian Cashman came after me hard," he said, referring to New York's general manager.

"A good leadoff hitter is tough to find, and I think that New York just found the best leadoff hitter in the game," he told WBZ.

Other clubs use the NY team as a model...Watch how they go about their business. Clean up your appearance and learn what is appropriate in the way of media relations.

Let's see if he can make the adjustment?

Tom,

I am not willing to blame an agent for a player's "memememe" hype. As you know his constant commentary here in Boston would be considered out of line by Torre and the boys.
Let someone else say what a great sign he was....not Damon himself. Agree with the thoughts of baseballdad and itsagreatgame.

As Tom Brady said: Why be a jerk?....I'll let someone else give me props.

Beenthere

Pos sure is cuter!

I think it is a great pick up by the Yankees

It will be tough for him to do better than he did hitting in front of Manny and Ortiz. But He's the best, just ask him.

I think the leadoff role has been underappreciated over the years but I think with the teams that have won lately, Scott Podsednik this year, myself last year, Juan Pierre the year before, a good leadoff man is tough to find, and I think that New York just found the best leadoff hitter in the game.

Management will get lambasted by the media for fumbling Theo Epstein, Damon, among others (Pedro), probably rightly so, however Damons arm will play worse at Yankee Stadium, his best years are behind him.

He is a good lead off guy, but he is the biggest grenade thrower in the big leagues, getting older every day. I understand why they let him go.

arizonared, two things I have noticed about myself since mine got the chance to play professional baseball: 1.)being a fan,I love the game even more; 2.)from the day your son signs that contract you learn that, inside professional baseball, this is a business. I used to question the salaries. For some of the reasons described by Beenthere and bbscout in a different thread, and for others, including what happened in SFO with JT Snow, I now have absolutely no problem with Damon getting $52,000,000 guaranteed for 4 years and for him taking it. I am not a Damon fan, by any means. I am also not a fan of the process. Just have a better, but by no means, really informed, perspective on the process.

Did Randy Johnson have to cut his hair????

He had trimmed his mullet hairdo prior to signing with NY, but trimmed it to "company" standards and cut his nasty mustache, after he signed.

Bottom line; We're just rooting for laundry anymore. Thats fine if the laundry wins it all, of course. The Red Sox took a step backwards today though.

I knew the Red Sox front office was a mess when they couldn't even resign their General Manager for Crimminy sake.

Looks like 80 wins and third place to me.

Concerning Chicago and keeping it in line...I'll try. Sometimes I think it would take an incident along the lines of Chernobyl to straighten this place up...maybe a neutron bomb is more appropriate...it leaves all of the buildings and infrastructure intact but takes out all of the living organisms...now if only they could come up with one that is highly selective!

The old hill...were you able to pull it in 3rd or did you have to downshift and grab 2nd? That 'hair- pin' curve about 2 or 3 blocks above Portland Ave. was always 2nd gear for me.

Take care.

Did you catch Damon's dad saying that Johnny will be "another Babe Ruth" that the Sox would take another 80 years to live down.

I think I understand little Johnny (the self-proclaimed best leadoff hitter in baseball) a little better now.

.316 BA and .366 OBA in 2005, both pretty close to his career best. Career .290/.353

Ichiro has career .332/.377 - and the knock on him (which I agree with) is that he doesn't walk enough. But he steals far more bases than Damon.

Yankees way overpaid, IMO
Funniest thing I've read so far...

I hope you had the time of your life

The funniest line in the article:

A centerfielder against whom even 36-year-old backup catchers will go from first to third at will. Have you ever thrown a baseball or football with your opposite hand? This is precisely what it looks like Damon is doing when he uncorks one of his weak, high-arcing parabolas that leave the cutoff man contemplating a fair catch as everybody moves up an extra base. Yes, Damon will match his predecessor Bernie Williams lollipop for lollipop, so Yankees fans will not have to adjust their expectations when it comes to the arm of their centerfielder.
