Hey everyone I am new and need your advice. Im currently a sophmore at a small private school in Princeton, New Jersey. I have been playing baseball and other sports for years, always having the deepest love for baseball. I am a shortstop/second basemen and occasional pitcher. Last year I played quite a lot for a freshmen on the junior varisty team. Practices and tryouts have recently started and I have been playing a great deal with the varsity team. The practices seem very intense and the coaches are very unconsiderit and kind. I loved the game at the junior varisty level but I am very unsure about the varisty and collegiate levels. Outside of school I play a lot of tennis, its a natural sport to me and I am quite good and just play for fun. I am considering leaving the game of baseball that I so dearly loved to try tennis at school. I was wanting to know if anyone had any advice to me as to how you know when its time to leave the game? I would really appreciate all of your inputs and thoughts.

Seems to be a common thread recently. See the link:

Don't know what to do....Need Help!

My guess is you have already begun the process. Search your feelings and see if one sport brings you more enjoyment than the other. If you feel you need to focus on one of those, make your decision and stand by it. That is a big step towards maturity.

My freshman son recently decided to play baseball to the exclusion of all other sports. While I thought he should wait a year or two before doing that, I respected his decision to do so.

Have a great deal of experience with both...played both, coached both...Both are grerat sports...Both my boys were excellent tennis players who probably could have played DI in college but they (not me)chose baseball instead...If you must choose...some very random thoughts that may help..

Tennis is a great sport, you can play it for the rest of your life, I mean ALL...a few years ago I was priviledged to coach an 85 year old who won a couple national championships...But Tennis will always be there. Baseball is fleeting...the window of opportunity is much smaller for baseball...

As far as the difficulty and intensity of practices and games...that should be part of the draw, the challenege. As much as I like tennis...The profile of tennis is low, the profile of baseball is high..as a result at the high school and for the most part at the college level, while tennis is a great sport there is little comparison to baseball in terms of electricty, or excitement. Which of course in part is why the intensity and expectation level is so high.

On the other side many people simply like the individual sports better and don't flouish in that intensity and spotlight. Or closely with a team. My boys wanted the Intensity the spotlight, and the team. I coach many kids who are great athletes and great kids but who simply don't. One is not better than the other that is just they way they are.

I also agree about fun. But remember there are a two kinds of fun, the fun of a roller coaster ride and then there is the fun of digging in accepting a challenge and seeing it through.

Again, both are great sports. But look deep. Only you'll know which one fits you, your personality, your goals, you mental, physical and emotional makeup.

Thank you all very much for your inputs, I couldnt agree with you more. The window of opportunity of baseball is closing for me and I need to take advantage of that, tennis can always be a hobby that I play can when I am older. I am very glad to say that I look forward to playing baseball this year. My highschool team is going to florida next week for sping training and with you reinsurance I couldnt be more excited. Thanks!
