LSU just cut senior Matt Gaudet to make room for Chad Jones (OF) who will miss 20 games to participate in spring football practices. In my opinion this was a stupid, unethical, and cruel move by the LSU coaching staff. Matt Gaudet: senior, academic honor roll, known quantity, walk off homer in crucial SEC game. Chad Jones: soph., inconsistent game performance, speed, "looks good"....what if gets hurt during football practice, and LSU already playing with only 34 man roster due to injury. Chad Jones should not be on the roster at all. If coaches Marinari and Miles could not reach agreement regarding spring practices, Gaudet should not have been cut.

Chad Jones was also on the roster last year. He is an outstanding athlete and potential early draft pick. I’m not sure why Gaudet got cut, but I’m certain that Jones was not going to get cut.
Could the back injury have anything to do with this? It would be interesting to know all the particulars inmvolved. No doubt that Gaudet was a good player. Gaudet was drafted in the 40th round in 2005 (Tampa Bay). Jones was drafted in the 13th round in 2007 by Houston. He would have went much higher had he been considered more signable.
I think anyone would keep Jones on their roster and he was on the roster last year. I don’t think using Jones to replace Gaudet is an issue, if that is what happened. It does seem that Gaudet should be on the roster, based on his profile from last year. That is why it would be interesting to find out why this happened.

Gaudet - From LSU profiles
quote:
A physical presence in the batter’s box who was limited at the plate last season due to a back injury ... came to LSU prior to the ’08 season after a record-setting tenure at Delgado Community College in New Orleans ... ... should see playing time as a right-handed designated hitter and first baseman ... has tremendous power to all fields ... a member of the 2008 SEC Academic Honor Roll as a general studies major.
