Close, its more like student ATHLETES...unless your thier on academic scholarship.

..."and there in lies the problem Rusty"...athletic programs exist because of the institution of higher learing...not the athletics...don't get me wrong...I am an "athletic supporter". Smile Unfortunately baseball does not generate the revenue that even small football schools can and until Title IX requirements are satisfied the non-revenue generating "Olympic" sports will suffer.

As told to me by a college baseball coach at a D-I program, "if your kid goes the JC route make sure they graduate with thier associates".

Title IX is the reason these schools cut baseball. Under this law schools are required to fund an equal amount of female athlete scholarships as male. When they cannot afford the scholarships for a matching number of female athletes, some mens sport has to be cut to compensate. Those schools that have a better fundraising operation can raise the money for plenty of scholarships so they start new sports for women like rowing and the like to allow for more mens sports. Sad, but true, and not going to change.

On the subject of this thread I believe it is time to restore the traditional Student FIRST, Athlete SECOND in ALL college athletics. Baseball should lead the way, but the "major" sports need to be reigned in as well. Football and basketball have become semi-pro operations and the athletes are being exploited, not educated.

Is North Texas going to start a baseball program? Thought I heard they were. Any plans for SMU? I think some of the northern colleges have Wrestling as a sport and colleges here in Texas have more baseball programs, and very few, if any, have wrestling. I may be wrong about that, if someone has any facts. My older son plays college football and it is amazing how many players are on full scholarship and yet hardly ever see the field on gamedays. In baseball, the kids with the full-rides are most likely on the field the most.
