Actually, the Marucci Cat 5² 33-inch, Cat 5² 34-inch, and the Marucci Black 33-inch, and Black 34-inch models were all decertified in the Spring of 2012. All four of these bats are now illegal to use in any league that requires BBCOR bats.

The Marucci Cat 5² 33-inch was decertified by the NCAA during February of 2012. FED (high schools) followed suit, banning this bat.

On June 6, 2012, the NCAA announced that it had decertified the Cat 5² 34-inch, and the Marucci Black 33-inch and Black 34-inch models. This decertification actually occurred in April. The NCAA could not announce this at the time due to a lawsuit that Marucci filed against the NCAA, along with an temporary restraining order. The restraining order was lifted on June 5, 2012, and the NCAA announced the decertification on June 6, 2012.

Some people may not be aware of this, because most high school teams had already stopped playing by the time the later decertification was announced publicly. Also, FED's baseball rules committee had already adjourned for the summer, so there was no official high school action that could be taken until the Fall of 2012. Most summer leagues DID ban these bats for the Summer of 2012 (and henceforth). For the Spring of 2013, both models of bat (Cat 5² and Black) had been discontinued by Marucci and replaced by new models that so far appear to have have met BBCOR specifications.

Well, consider me rather surprised (then again, maybe I shouldn't be).

This appears to be a grey area. Technically, NFHS has not specifically banned the Cat 5² 34-inch or the Black 33 and 34.

However, NFHS also has this page: http://www.nfhs.org/content.aspx?id=4775

It reads:

Approved and Unapproved Non-wood BESR baseball bat lists

We have received a comprehensive list of approved and non-approved BESR non-wood bats from the NCAA Bat Certification facility at the Washington State University Sport Science Laboratory. The link is http://www.mme.wsu-ssl.org/certifiedbaseballbats.aspx. Please share this information with your schools and your registered officials. We trust this will reduce some of the confusion with the compliancy of many non-wood baseball bats. Thank you and please contact the NFHS headquarters if you have any questions.

[Yes, the NFHS page still says "BESR", while the Wash. State Sports Science Lab page uses the term "BBCOR". The NFHS page must have been put up before BBCOR became the standard, and the wording has not been updated.]

If you go to the link, you will find ONLY the Cat 5² 31-inch and 32-inch models listed as being approved. NOT the 33 OR 34-inch models. Likewise, only the Black 31 and 32 are on the approved list. The Black 2 model (different from the original Black) is approved in lengths from 31 to 34 inches.

So while FED did not officially ban the bats mentioned above, the bats don't appear on the list of NCAA and NFHS BBCOR Approved Baseball Bats.

So I would still think that they are not legal to use.

However, there is REALLY only one way to find out for certain. Follow this advice on the FED page: "If you have any questions, please feel free to contact B. Elliot Hopkins, NFHS Baseball Rules Editor/National Interpreter at (ehopkins@nfhs.org) or (317) 822-6900, extension 5757."

I don't think the NFHS will do anything until the 2014 season. Marucci might be in litigation with them about it. Its to bad Albin bats sold out to Marucci they made a good BESR bat.

Here's a few postings I found on another message board..

The NCAA originally notified Marucci of this decertification in April, at which time Marucci filed suit against the NCAA. A temporary restraining order preventing the decertification of the bats was issued immediately and the district court ordered the proceedings to be kept under seal. On June 5, the district court unsealed the case and dissolved the temporary restraining order against the NCAA, thus permitting the NCAA to proceed with the decertifying of the bats."

NCAA decertified the bats back in April. Marucci filed a suit resulting in a restraining order preventing the decertification. Nobody knew this yet Marucci was continuing to sell the bats and some Cat 5 33" owners had exchanged/paid up to get a Black. Now the district court dissolved the restraining order preventing the decertification and now the bats are decertified. OUCH!!!!!

Marucci has a real mess on their hand. They have bat owners who will need an exchange and they have the Cat 5 33" owners who exchanged/paid up for the Black to now have it decertified.

My son has a Cat 5 31" so he is not affected (yet). We have other bats in the bag, but have to wonder if the big guys are behind this. I do think Marucci made the wrong decision to sue the NCAA, they should have dealt with the de-certifiation in April appropriately. They dug themselves a deeper hole to get out of now.

I see plenty of Marucci's being used, along with Easton's, DeMarini's, LS and I can't really tell the difference with BBCOR. Mishits end up as bloopers to the infield. You have to have good mechanics, good swing speed and hit the ball in the sweetspot. So it boils down to the player and his athletic ability.

..................Buyer Beware......... Is all I can say..

It will probably be very hard to find.  When the 34in. was decertified (my son was using the bat), Marucci had an exchange program where they offered wood bats for replacement or you could wait for the new Marucci metal. Most of my son's friends chose the wood bats because they had to use them all summer and fall for travel ball.

But the 34/31 was not decertified......Originally Posted by LauraZA:
