This is standard, and the 99 MPH isn't the big deal that the reporter makes it out to be.

Guys typically cruise 5 to 10 percent slower than they peak. Very often guys have to back off 5 MPH (or more) in order to be able to throw strikes.

When you're scouting a guy, an important question is how much he has to back off his peak in order to throw strikes. 2-3 MPH is no big deal. 10 MPH is a red flag.

Now a guy who can cruise at 99 and still throw strikes, that's impressive.

However, cruising at 92 is above average. The kid also looks like he's got decent mechanics (e.g. modest M in his arm action).

Well... It sure is a big deal to us. It is the single highest gun reading we have ever had at one of our events. And we've seen almost all the top high school power arms in the past 15 years. 99 mph is RARE ground! Ask any scout how many 99s he's ever seen on his Stalker?

Just for accuracy sake…

We saw Michael Main pitch about 6 times over the last year. His peak velocity was never below 96 mph and his average velocity was around 94. We saw many 97s, a few 98s and the 99. Our people who have seen him this spring have been getting him 92-96 every time out, topping out at 97 with a couple reported 98s. Lots of 94-96! And they tell us he has looked much better this spring regarding movement and command.

Last summer and fall, Main was used mostly as a closer. While the velocity was there, I don’t think he pitched enough to develop great command. He just never got into a rhythm.

No matter how you look at it, Michael Main is one great athlete who I think could be a high draft pick as an outfielder as well as a RHP. He is a plus runner, with a plus plus arm and he has natural hitting ability. And he really competes!

Jury is still out as to how high he will go in the draft, but I for one am hoping he goes real early.

This HAS to be the craziest thing I have ever read on this board!

You have lost all credibility with me. There is NO WAY you scout for any MLB team after having said that. I doubt that matters since 99 is so commonplace. Roll Eyes

My point is that there are many people out there who can TOUCH 99 but cannot CRUISE at 99 while still maintaining control. Instead, they have to back off a few MPH in order to be able to command their FB (and throw strikes).

The video of this kid suggests that while he may be able to TOUCH 99, he CRUISES at 92 or 93. That is above average, but very different than CRUISING at 99.

I know the difference between touch/cruise. This is still the craziest/dumbest thing I have read on here. Please list all HS pitchers you have seen who hit 99 on a Stalker. Heck, even list all of those you have HEARD of who hit 99.
