Thanks, PGStaff, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers just beat the Kane County Cougars 4-3 on a bases loaded walk (questionable) by former TCU pithcer, Sam Demel, in the bottom of the 7th (1st 1/2 of the doubleheader) to end the Cougars 2007 playoff hopes.

So, it looks like your hometown Cedar Rapids Kernels are in the playoffs!

The good news is that Matt will be home Thursday for about a week off before heading to Arizona for fall instructional league for about a month.

Fun, ain't it?
I haven't been on here in awhile and have really enjoyed hearing about everyone's experiences...especially those in their first pro season. FO...so glad to hear Matt's doing well and off to Intructs this fall. Its hard to believe that its been 5 years since our oldest first turned pro. Makes me remember how much fun we've had along the way.

We're off to to San Fran next weekend to see our son play at home ...our first trip there. Well, actually I was in SF 5 years ago, at the end of his first pro season when he had shoulder surgery at Stanford. The day before his surgery he and I toured Alcatraz in the morning and went to the Giants/Dodgers game that night. Barry hit one out, the Giants won, and we had an absolute blast! Back then, taking the field with the "Big Boys" seemed like a long shot, a dream that we didn't even talk about openly. But here we are...5 years later ...and its actually happened.

Tell your boys to hang in there when things get tough. Pro ball often feels like a LONNNNNGGGG and lonely road, but its worth traveling...and sometimes those dreams do come true. Smile

God is good!

Almost, its. Almost.

One tired boy arrived at DFW about 9:15AM this morning.

About 10 days off before heading to AZ.

Curious about instructional league, here's what he said this morning.

Breakfast at 6:00AM. Meetings, fitness workout, pens (catcher), defensive catcher skills, game against other area teams (split by catchers) done about 3:30 or 4:00.

Sounds about what I have heard as well.

You left out lunch and dinner. Wink
Its, I see Darin is having a nice year in the NYP league. Looked up Auburn's roster and can't believe the number of kids we know on that team.

Bobble, That's great news about David Davidson. Nick Weglarz has a HR in his first two games at high A now. It's great to see him come back this year.

Another guy from your parts, who we knew real well is Joey Votto. Surely he will get called up being he's on the 40 man. He's hitting .294 with 22 HRs and 92 RBI in AAA. He's been hitting since the Reds signed him.

My kids aren't playing these days, but there are thousands of others we try to keep track of as much as possible. It's one of the fun things we get to experience. Then it's also fun to hear about all the HSBBW players in college and professional baseball, whether they have a connection to us or not.

There is a place on the Baseball Cube that lists all a players former team mates. It's great for those who are listed. I suggest TxMom check it out. Barry Bonds will always be one of her son's teammates on that list. It's really kind of neat. Then under Barry Bonds, her son will always be listed as one of his teammates.
PG

I think you have hit on a key elelemnt of what we do---watching the kids we have seen develop and move along in the ranks, whether it be to continue playing, going into coaching or into the business world and be successful.

Obviously we do not deal with the number of players you do but then with our team we develop a much closer relationship as a team which makes things special when you see kids like Darin have success.

It makes it as lot of fun
We went to the last home game of the Kane County Cougars to see Matt play again.......with the added bonus of discovering that Joe Benson, who my oldest had played against for years, was playing for the Beloit Snappers. It was fun to see them both play.

I am really looking forward to next year--I hope that many posters' kids will come through the Chicago area. When they do, please let us know. We'd love to see them play.

TR is right--it does make it a lot of fun.

I have to echo the comments on how much fun it is to watch other HSBBWebsters' sons who we have followed up through HS, now getting the opportunity to play pro ball. It's been tons of fun following them in college also. My college RHP son has not played since last October because of an injury and will still be sitting out this Fall season, so it is especially heartwarming to me to be able to follow our extended family of sons!

BobbleheadDoll,

No sooner said than done it seems! HaHaHa

Joey Votto in his first Big League start today goes 3-3 with a homerun against the Mets.

Here's a couple short reports we wrote on him in 2001.

PG Report: Votto looks like a big leaguer with his outstanding body. He runs close to average, has a strong arm and fluid actions. Most impressive is his lefthanded swing. He generates extreme bat speed with little effort, and down the road he should hit with good power. The ball already jumps off his bat. We think he will make quite a name for himself.

PG Report: Votto made a name for himself at Tropicana. He is a good looking athlete with a strong baseball body and a nice arm. Most importantly he has a beautiful left-hand swing that projects to hit with plus power. The ball jumps off his bat and sounds a bit different than most wood bats.

I posted a reply in another thread. Just read this one and realized that I owe some thanks here, too.

We weren't in SF for his big night... flew out early Sat. morning...but we still had a ton of fun. On the flight home last night I thought about all of the wonderful things we had done...watching the games, meeting players, touring the ballpark, etc.

My favorite part of any baseball trip has always been going out for dinner after the game. It's the only time we really get to talk, catch up, laugh together, etc. That still hasn't changed...except now he and his wife are taking us out. This time we went to a seafood restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf. It was so beautiful...sun setting across the bay, bridge in the background, seals barking on the pier. We didn't want it to end...even ordered coffee and desserts.

Watching your son play in a MLB game is incredible, but it will never beat the simple pleasure of spending time together over a good meal. He's grown into a wonderful, caring man ... and that's what I enjoy the most!

Again, thanks for thinking of us.

TxMom: In San Francisco, we truly appreciate your son's efforts. Sure is nice to see a great young player come and do some fantastic stuff. Our family are life long Giants fans so we're always interested in any new player.

Hope you're enjoying our home field. I think it's one of the nicest...especially when the weather is just right.

Good luck to Dan this season..we're all watching.
Newcomer...
We LOVED AT&T park in SF. What a special place! The views were even better than they seem on TV and the food selections were fantastic! My husband loved the garlic fries, but nothing beat the roasted cinnamon almonds IMHO. The crowds really got into the game, too...especially against the Dodgers. Smile There's so much to see and do...we walked all over the park during both games and had a blast.

We've been to alot of stadiums and games all over the country, but this park is the best!

My son was at one of those Dodger's games you attended. Went with four of his new college team mates. As the old San Francisco-hand, he guided the way by Muni from school to the park. And then to DiMaggio's Restaurant for a late night dinner.Sat right behind the Giants dugout. Nice seats thanks to one of his buddy's father.
.

OfcrKID got invited to Fall Instructional and the AF said he could go half days. The team said sorry but that won't work. The AF came back three days later and said, OK full days, but work at night. When OfcrKID called the team back they said Sorry Kid, we gave up your slot...

Then the front office called back after a very "downer weekend" and said, You're back on the Roster. So he reports tom'row morning. Instead of a roller coaster, it feels more like a bungy jump. Funny, all the kids showing up at the hotel are complaining about having to show up for practice at 7AM. OfcrKID said to me, what's the big deal... reveille's at 05darkness...

So... he plays ball during the daytime and loads C135's at night.... can't tell you what they're loading.... cuz then I'd have to .....well you know the rest.

He met Joe Savery at lunch (first round from Rice/lots of millions signing bonus) and Savery said to him... so you're that Air Force kid they've been talking about... priceless... hope they become good friends....

Glad he's young and strong. Sounds like a tough schedule.
