Flint - I would love to meet Mitch Albom - whoever the hell he is - and knock his lights out for spewing this garbage.
Man to man - I would love to put him to sleep for awhile.
This is the irresponsible media garbage we should all expect in the upcoming months. This is an example of what people will do to make a buck - and exploit our kids.
Mitch needs to say that **** to our faces - and see how long he stays conscious.

ISG, sorry if you were offended. You replied so quickly I'm unsure if you read beyond "Why Steroids Don't Matter". Albom, in addition to being a writer for the Detriot Free Press, appears on ESPN's Sports Writers, and and is the author of books including "Tuesdays with Morrie", "the five people you meet in heaven" and "Just One More Day". I believe his intent in the article and mine in posted it was stimulate thought on the subject. He concludes: "And if that sounds like confusing, non-declarative, mixed signals-well, now you know how baseball came to the sorry point in the first place."
Flint - I equate him with a smut peddler - a sycophant.
I would like to give him my opinion - and stimulate his thought process as well.
This is what we all have to look forward to in the upcoming months.

Sycophant- I had to scramble for the dictionary, never to late to learn. As far as Albom is concerned, we all have our own interpretation.
Albom and Lupica from the Daily news in NY must be related
As a self-proclaimed "seam head"...and as an Allied Health Professional (Certified Athletic Trainer)...I cannot disagree at all with either of his lists...
...and fail to see why the article is worth getting worked up over. Albom makes great points in both lists.

You are clearly upset by something, but I can't tell what it is from your posts in this thread, nor can I see anything about the article that is offensive. Would you mind pointing out what the issue is, and why it should be worthy of physical assault?

Perhaps some form of Roid Rage?
The Albom's of the world will throw out anything to further their personal cause. They are worse than the guys that are actually involved in the situation.
They will "make us think" about whether breaking state and federal laws is somehow justifiable. LOL
They will attempt to get their sickness spread throughout the media - to your kid and to my kid - for their own personal gain.
The Albom's of the world are the true bloodsuckers - and we should make sure that we dont allow bloodsuckers anywhere near our families.
I would love to discuss Albom's carefully crafted "question" with Albom.
I would also love to discuss why Albom feels it is necesssary to even suggest that breaking State and federal laws may be justifiable - and I would love to dicsuss why he wants to disseminate that message to my kids.

flint - you can make fun of me all you want - and you didnt offend me. - And even if you did - so what?
I think that posting a link to this sick person's garbage is actually good for us all - I think it will be a harbinger to what we will be reading for quite some time to come.
So fire away - and make your jokes - but remember - it isnt really that funny. IMO.

Its-
Here's how you can meet him-
Contact MITCH ALBOM at 313-223-4581 or malbom@freepress.com. He will sign his books at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Borders in Canton, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Barnes & Noble in Allen Park and noon Thursday at Borders Express in Renaissance Center in Detroit.
It seemed like an innocent quiz to me.

I will call him tomorrow a.m. - and tell him exactly how I feel about his disgusting "literary" activities.
Lets see if Albom will take the call.
I will get back to you tomorrow with the results.

Albom makes great points in both lists.
Here are some of his great "points"
• 1. It's not illegal to use them if you have a prescription.
Yeah - but if you dont - it is AGAINST THE LAW.
• 2. There was no testing in baseball until a few years ago -- well after many of the athletes cited in the Mitchell Report allegedly used them.
So - Breaking the law is OK - as long as there was no MLB testing.
• 3. The misconceptions about steroids are insane: When properly used, they are not health-threatening.
And when young kids use them incorrectly - they DIE. Nice Albom.
• 4. Athletes always try to get an edge.
An Albom justification for breaking the law.
* Baseball is entertainment. You pay to see a show. The summer of 1998, when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa had their record home-run chase, was a glorious time. What's bad about that?
Yeah - whats bad about breaking the law? Nothing wrong with that at all. As long as it is entertaining.
• 10. These guys are grown men.
Another beauty. Most murderers are grown men too.
Yeah JT - I gotta admit - this sycophant makes some great points. Just a great thing to have our kids read.
It was a QUIZ - not an opinion. I don't get why you are so upset about his.
Here are Albom's opening and ending statements:
"If, like many baseball fans, you are having a hard time deciding where you stand on the explosive steroids report issued last week, I am here to help.
Below are two lists. Why Steroids Matter. Why Steroids Don't Matter. Get a pencil, and circle the statements you agree with."
Insert Lists.
"OK. Done your circling? Now count how many from Category 1 and how many from Category 2. Bigger number is where you stand.
And if that sounds like confusing, non-declarative, mixed signals -- well, now you know how baseball came to this sorry point in the first place."

So - basically - Albom thinks this is some type of game?
Did Albom speak to any of the parents whose kids died because of it?
He is here to help - LOL - my ***.
He is there to sell his smut with some cleverly crafted menu to pick from.
Its just a game and a story to him.
Makes me sick to my stomach.

Uh, yes, it is "some type of game." And nowhere in the article does it say anything about the kids that take these drugs. The whole issue has to do with professional athletes taking performance enhancing drugs. Not kids.
You need to take a pill and settle down.
You might want to ask yourself why this article is upsetting you so much.

Stanwood,
You might want to ask yourself why you are so disrespectful.
You also sound like you want to say alot more.
Why dont you say it.
Make it real specific - state who you are and why you would imply what you are implying. Be specific.
I dare you. LOL
Not that hard to understand why iitg is upset, not that he needs for me to explain that.
Sometimes you read something and not really understand the point of why it was written or why analogies sre being made.

Yes TPM,
Its a game to Albom - and the other cretins like him.
Its something to write about - and it doesnt make a difference what **** he writes - he just throws it against a wall - and sees what sticks.
A bottom dweller.

IMO Albom is one of the best writers in the sports world whose insight extends beyond athletics.
wow, I never thought there was ever anything bad about looking at both sides of an issue. Whether you agree with one side or the other, or neither, nothing is hurt by encouraging people to make their own decisions by looking at both sides of an issue.
IMO, this article is NUETRAL on the steroids issue, and is simply looking at arguments from both sides

TPM-
I still really don't get it, maybe you do need to explain. Why is ITS so Upset?
I see a well written article by one of the most recognized sportswriters in the country. He laid out all the perceptions people on each side of the issue have with steroids. I don't see any personal statements of what Albom believes. I see a writer making a very valid point. He's exposing the hypocracy and confusion MLB and some people have created over steroids.
MLB baseball turned their back on steroids long enough to profit and them did an about face when Congress called them on the carpet. When Congress comes calling MLB shakes in their boots over their anti-trust protection.
Scott Ostler, another sportswriter has a great idea. Selig should be shown the door. The one point I disagree with Ostler is I don't believe the steroid publicity is going to cost MLB money (fans). After reading the meat of the article and geting into his blurbs, if you've never read Ostler he has a weird sense of humor. He did standup when he was younger in LA.

Ostler's piece is funny. A couple of highlights: the term "Winstrol Warriors" and the suggestion to play Neil Young before every game. "I've seen the needle and the damage done/a little part of it in everyone."
Clever take by Ostler, thanks for the input RJM.
hhmmm, I read the article, I have seen those arguments already. Old news! If you want to call it news?

Sosa and McGwire are mere caricatures of what they were at this stage of the game.
Might as well have them pose with Olive Oil and Seahag, and a can of cream.
The Babe preferred Wimpy and a plate full of hamburgers..............chased down with beers..
Don't you remember when Sosa couldn't catch up with gas, so he stood on it while everyone threw him sliders away and chumped him??
All of a sudden, he became a dangerous hitter.
Was that because he got better and improved on his weaknesses, or was it the needle, cream, clear, whatever...........thats the problem.
The general fanbase can distinguish why?????
But he did get bigger physically????????

Its, with all due respect, I think you have seriously misunderstood the article.
His point was to ridicule those who shrug their shoulders at the steroid problem.
The problem with the article is, I don't know anyone taking that position anyway, so I don't know who his target is. He must be talking to some people I don't know.
But at least he's trying to get through to them.

Midlo Dad nailed it.
In no way does Albom endorse steroids.
He simply challenges readers to evaluate their past and present thinking on the issue.

Haverdad,
I did not say that he endorsed steroids.
Midlo,
Despite my advanced age - I think my reading comprehension skills are still pretty good.
For what it is worth - (which I believe is very very little) here is why this gets me so angry.
Why doesnt this "respected" journalist" write a story about how all of this stuff was AGAINST the law. And how it can kill you.
Instead - this respected journalist gives us a "pop-quiz" - to "make us think". I wonder how many teenagers read this article - and dont quite get his subtle "ridicule" of the situation?
My next question for Mitch - Will his next article be:
"Baffled by Bank Robbery" - Then take this test.
I think it is an irresponsible piece of journalism.
And I think it is written the way it is because writing a serious - straightforward article - that unequivocally states his position - would be boring - and wouldnt sell very well.
Just my opinion.

How do you get "disrespectful" out of what I wrote. Tell me and I will try to explain.
Secondly, I'm not implying anything. What is it that you think I am implying? Why don't I say a lot more about what exactly? Maybe I struck a nerve with you that you didn't want struck?
My name is right there in the post, Stanwood. That's my real first name. If you want to know more I will tell you my last name.
I said what I wanted to say in the previous post. In my opinion, you're the one that sounds like you have something else to say.

There is always one like you on the internet. A cyber "hit and run" artist.
While everyone else is disagreeing with my interpretation and my reaction to the article in a meaningful and respectful manner - your contribution is to tell me to "chill out" and to imply insidious personal garbage.
The motivation for my post is to make sure that young kids get the right message.
What is your motivation for your post?
You already know this information. I already know. The people on this board already know. It's because we're passionate about the game. If not, we wouldn't spend time on this board.quote:I have seen those arguments already. Old news! If you want to call it news?
But when I talk to the parents of high school athletes you would be surprised how many are clueless about what's going on. They only know what the media tells them. You would be surprised how many are clueless regarding anything about the game or high school sports in general. What do you think the average fan knows who doesn't have a kid playing, have access to the game or reads rags like BA or comes to this site.
I used to get into friendly debates with parents on issues. They would tell me I was off base. Now I tell them if they want to find out exactly how much they don't know, read this website.

Why didn't you say that to begin with? Instead you called him a "cretin", a "smut peddler", a "sycophant", a "blood sucker"; you wanted to "knock his lights out", and "see how long he stays conscious" if he says this to your face.
The motivation for my post was to settle you down a bit so the article could be discussed rationally. That doesn't look like it's going to happen.
And how am I a "hit and run" artist? What the heck does that mean? I'm right here, I'm not running anywhere. Just because you have nearly 4000 posts does not give you the right to try to stomp all over people that have opinions too.
