CPLZ, I got to disagree with you. I think Navy will make the Patriot League playoffs. They have won over twenty games at this point could be upwards to thirty by season end. This coach has them pointed in the right direction. They have been losing to Army lately (for Navy that is not good), however, I think Coach Sottolano will agree, never take them for granted.
Think I would agree. Coach Kosty is a winner and he has transformed the Navy program since he's been here. This may not be one of his best season with wins and losses, but the program is still a good program. Whether they make the playoffs, I have no idea. And, yes, losing to Army in anything is never good for Navy.

New coach at Air Force may generate renewed competitiveness among the service academies.

Amen to that!! TexasBoy...isaac is correct.
Son is going to Afganistan next week!! Pray.
ahs,
Best of luck to Jeremy. I'm confident in his abilities and training and am sure he'll do another great job of leading his men over there.

About Navy baseball..

Their current coach is 45-54 in the Patriot League and is two games out of last place to make the playoffs with 8 to play and one of the teams 2 games in front of them, Bucknell, won their series vs. Navy last weekend effectively making Navy 3 games out vs. them. They play a 4 game series vs. Holy Cross this weekend, who is three games in front of them, and then finish with a 4 game set vs. Lehigh, who is 2 games in front of them. They need to go 3-1 vs. both of those teams to tie Lehigh at this point and have the tie breaker to make the playoffs. Not impossible, but a steep uphill climb for sure.

Their current winning record of 24-16 comes with a SOS (strength of schedule) of 296 of 301. They play one of the worst schedules in the country and should win that many games playing that weak of a competition.

The fact that Navy hasn't won a series vs. Army in 7 years is just salt on an already festering wound. I don't wish Kosti or Navy any ill will, it just is what it is. The picture I tried to paint for the OP was neither rosy nor slandering, but accurate.

My conclusion is not completely reliant on stats, as I have seen them play also.

You may be right. Just that the program prior to the current coach arriving was a lot worse than it has been in recent years. Not sure exactly how many years, K has been there, but he did (at least in the beginning) have the program headed in a very positive direction. Given the won-loss records and sos you posted, I would tend to agree that they are underachieving.

Could be that Navy baseball is in danger of losing its way.....again.

Well CPLZ, I would think you would agree.... If you coach at Army, your job is in jeopardy if you lose to Navy and Air Force. If you coach at Navy, your job is in jeopardy if you lose to Air Force and Army. And If you're at Air Force, you better beat Army and Navy.

Army and Navy being the big ones; you have to beat the other or you're gonna be in trouble...
My son got his Permit to Report in the mail today. He'll be a midshipman in the class of 2014, and July 1 is Induction Day. We really liked Coach Kosty when he visited at our high school, and certainly hope he'll be around a long time. As a completely biased, non-objective parent I'd like to think that the incoming class of players can help turn things around! I say that with much respect for CPLZ and his talented son. Wink

Good Luck to Army in upcoming tournament.
