Can an NCAA coach/team/school pay for a rostered player's airfare to get to a scheduled series (the player has a family emergency and is out of town when the team travels, but cannot afford a ticket to then rendezvous with the team). Would this be considered an NCAA violation or would it be clean?

Ask the old Missouri University basketball coach, Norm Stewart about it--he got slapped when he paid airfare to go home for a family funeral and the kid did not have the money---according to the rules you cannot buy the kid a sandwich unless you buy for the entire team--I do not agree with the rule but that is what it is
I'm not sure on this one. We have had a similar issue here as to what TRHit said and our program did get in trouble for that. On the other hand, Florida State I believe was able to pay for a player to travel to an away game because he had an interview for a fellowship or something like that.

I wonder if the difference was the location? As in paying for the player to go home is not okay, but paying for the player to travel to a contest is? That could make sense to me since the team was going to be paying for that travel anyway; just a little different...

16.6.1.3.1 Family Member of Student-Athlete. An institution may pay transportation, housing and
meal expenses for a student-athlete’s spouse, children and teammates to be present in situations in which a family member or legal guardian of the student-athlete suffers a life-threatening injury or illness or, in the event of a family member’s or legal guardian’s death, to provide the student-athlete’s spouse, children and teammates with such expenses in conjunction with funeral arrangements.

16.11.1.12 Miscellaneous Benefits. An institution may provide or arrange for the following benefits for a student-athlete: (Adopted: 4/26/01)
(a) The use of a return ticket at any time after the conclusion of a foreign tour;

(b) Receipt of frequent flyer points and/or miles earned while traveling to and from intercollegiate practice and/orcompetition; (Adopted: 4/24/03 effective 8/1/03)

(c) Participation in receptions and festivities associated with championships, conference tournaments or all-star
events hosted by and conducted on the institution’s campus;

(d) Occasional meals to team members provided by the parent of a student-athlete at any location;

(e) Telephone calls in emergency situations as approved by the director of athletics (or his or her designee);

(f) Reasonable tokens of support and transportation, housing and meal expenses in the event of serious injury, serious illness, or death of a family member or teammate; (Revised: 4/13/09)

So depending on what the family emergency was, I would say no that it is not an infraction of the rules depending on the circumstances that is. Hope this helps.

The relevant Bylaw is 16.8 (for D1), which is entitled EXPENSES PROVIDED BY THE INSTITUTION FOR PRACTICE AND COMPETITION

In general, it isn't permissible to provide transporation from a player's home to a competition site.

However, there are a number of exceptions. For example:
16.8.1.4 Travel to Regular-Season Contests during Vacation Period.
16.8.1.4.1 General Rule. An institution may provide team transportation for a student-athlete to travel from campus to the site of a regular-season contest and back to campus.
16.8.1.4.1.1 Exception If a student-athlete travels to a site other than the event site during the vacation period, the institution may provide the cost of round-trip transportation for the student-athlete to travel from campus to the event site and back to campus even if the student-athlete does not travel with the team. The student-athlete shall pay only the additional cost associated with traveling to a site other than the event site.

It's reasonable to infer from the exception that travel expenses from a non-campus site are not permissible during the regular term, excepting emergencies, etc.

The rules are relaxed during championships and summer term.
