Hi there!

My son is a 16u 2020 5 11' 190lb 1B/LHP.  During the PG WWBA in Florida this week he had conversations facilitated by his coach with 3 D1 colleges, one of which asked him to come visit this coming weekend to watch their college football team play a home game, get a campus tour, spend the night and then watch the baseball team practice the next morning.

Didnt expect this to happen so fast (assumed we had another year) so we have 5 days to prep for his visit. I just have general questions on what to expect during the visit, is there a place to find questions he/we should be asking and what is the general expectation for this trip.  Its a great school academically and sizewise for him and hes a 3.7GPA honors student.

Thank you!!!

1738Dad,

Congrats on the interest your son has generated.  There are probably a million questions swirling in your son's head and your head about these schools and the process.   In addition to the link that 3and2fastball provided there is also a search button on the title bar next to your screen name.   You can find an exhaustive list of general questions that many posters have provided over the years.   Some of the answers will be expected and others eye opening.  The best questions are those specific to your son, and his situation which means your son has a general idea of what he wants to get out of his 4 years of college baseball eligibility.  So, if you haven't already done it,  now is a good time to sit down with your son to map out the next 6.5 years including baseball, academics and family budget to come up with an overall plan.  The plan can be changed and it is just a starting point.   My son made a major change to his plan in his junior year, and it altered time lines, expenses and who he was eventuallly recruited by.  So, as your son is sitting down with these coaches asking general questions  about their program he'll be better prepared to ask questions specific to his goals.  As an example, my son wanted to study engineering.  A question he asked many coaches was "how does your baseball program work with a student athlete who wants to major in engineering, medicine, law, architecture?".  Another question had to do with summer engineering internships versus summer college baseball requirements.   These are examples, but these responses were of critical importance to my son.   Your son can come with a few of his own questions based his plans.   Of course there is a time and a place to ask these questions.   I'd probably start with general questions then work my way to more specific questions.

As always, this is JMO.  Best of luck!

1738Dad, congratulations to your son and welcome to the site.  In addition to the links others have offered up and the instruction that you can search any topic, you will also likely get very good feedback from those who have been there with any specific questions here.

As far as the "i'm not sure it matters" comment regarding son's HS performance and accomplishments, the answer is - no, it doesn't.  It is clear by the attention he is getting that the current skill set he is showing is strong enough to garner the desired attention.  That is what matters most.

The only thing I can add at this point is that your son (and you as parents) should feel OK about using the newness of it all as a reason to feel comfortable asking as many questions as you need and in telling the school you need to go home and get your head around things before you make any decisions should any offer come from the visit.  With this thought going in, you all won't need to deal with the added pressure of "what do we do if.. ".

To add, have him get a relationship going with his HS Counselor...she/he will help him streamline the remaining yrs of HS for which academic track he needs to follow to qualify him for the best academic $$$'s available, in addition to athletic $$'s. I.e, don't allow him to slack off math, science, etc his Sr yr just because he has enough credits to graduate. Get him registered with NCAA Clearinghouse, so SAT & ACT scores will be sent when the time is right.

Make a spread sheet of the schools he's interested in, including contact details of each Coach/ Academic Counselors... follow up all visits with a personal Thank You note, preferably mailed to HC, RC, etc...

There will be more as ya'll progress, and folks here are more than willing to point you in the right direction...Keep asking questions!

And GOOD luck! Enjoy his HS games!
