Heard the same rumor... Former 5A coach going to a 4A school after a brief time away from HS..........Is it true??????????????

Sam Houston State is looking for a new coach. There are several HS coaches on the list:

Sam Houston State received 42 applications for the vacant Bearkats’ head baseball coaching position. Here is the list of interested names and a brief description of each applicant:



• Kirk Blount — assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at University of Houston

• Daniel Boedeker — head coach Shiner High School, former pitcher at SHSU

• Britton Bonneau — head coach Abilene Christian University (career record of 407-185)

• Kyle Brizendine — self-employed investment adviser in Mexia (coached or taught youth baseball for past 10 years)

• Bryan Conger — assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at the University of Utah; former head coach at Cloud County Community College

• Todd Eastin — head coach at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix; professional scout for Cincinnati Reds

• Kevin Ellis — volunteer assistant at University of California-Riverside; head coach of Graham Roughnecks in Texas Collegiate League last summer

• Neil Fiala — head coach at Southwestern Illinois (12-year record of 527-260); five-time Great Rivers Conference coach of the year

• Wynn Fletcher — head coach Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn.; former head coach at Faulkner University in Alabama

• Willie Gawlik — head coach at Texas-Pan American from 2002 to present

• Tom Gladney — head coach at Midway High School in Hewitt since 1999; 208-44-1 record (won Class 4A state championship and played in state finals also); former head coach at Mississippi College (336-337 record in 15 years)

• Elliot Johnson — head coach Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill.; former head coach at LeTourneau University and Trevecca Nazarene College

• Mark Johnson — former head coach at Texas A&M University (848-407-2 in 21 years); winningest coach in Texas A&M history; 2002 Texas Baseball Hall of Fame inductee; 2002 Sporting News national coach of the year; three NCAA regional championships and two College World Series appearances

I heard a rumor about a former 4A coach becoming an assistant coach at a perinnial powerhouse 5A school.

Anybody else heard this?

SHSU has some quality applicants on that list!

I'm on the phone right now with my inside source who knows who the new coach of the Lake Dallas baseball program is going to be. He say's it is.....darn it, these cell phones are worthless when you really need them! I will be back!!

Many of those coaches amy not want that info to be public knowledge

That list was made public by SHSU! Got a gripe? Take it up with SHSU.

SD, if they get Mark Johnson - look out. He'll put them on the map again. Word is he would like to keep coaching, but wants to stay close to home. SHSU is one place that fits that bill.

It's amazing that the all knowing "experts" are quick to judge. The list was published in the Huntsville paper.

KD...did I not tell you that Madlock would return to the HS ranks. I do not recall who said he would never return. I was recently told by FM faithful that he was not welcomed back to FM as everyone expected (yet they continue to make more mistakes).

I guess FM will continue to excel in District championships (at least they wished that would happen ) then get knocked fom the playoffs for poor decision making process. Before FM lovers jump all over me again...didn't FM have a pitcher drafted that pitched about 8 innings all year? Great coaching keep it up.

Train -- I've heard all sorts of crazy rumors about players moving to Coppell -- now why would that want to do that?????

FM pitcher getting drafted after 8 innings says a lot of things to me but it didn't put a red flag about coaching what it said to me:

-two pitcher rotations on the HS level can leave talented pitchers out of the mix if those 2 starting pitchers go the distance game after game...If you aren't one those 2 don't give up hope if you have the tools. Find a way to get your exposure.

-Maybe this FM pitcher wanted/asked to be a closer, then that became his role and when he got the chance (when/if/ever the other 2 didn't go the distance) then he did what was needed, successfully, for the team. He knew his role.

-When he was on the mound, for those 8 innings, which could have been 1 inning for 8 different games or any combo., it showed he had the tools and composure to be successful.

- Maybe this pitcher knew what most of us know that there are many other avenues besides your HS team that will get you seen and he took advantage of that.


-Live/Fresh/not overpitched arms might just be a huge positive to scouts/coaches when looking to recruit.

Congrats to the player on doing his job, getting seen and drafted! I don't know him personally but he has opened a lot of eyes.....

If my ex-wife didn't still live in LD, I might consider moving back. But all the kings horses, and all the kings men wouldn't get me to move back close to my ex wife again.

I've heard some wild rumors flying around as a matter of fact. All over the area really. I think I've heard the same one running up around the Coppell area, and another suprising one down in the Mansfield area. Who knows??

I saw Jordon Walden at Lone Star Park on Friday, won't tell you what he said about where he is playing this fall.

The article says the position pays less than $50K and I've heard that SHSU considers it's baseball coach a P/T employee.

It would seem that may hinder bringing in a big dog.

If you move back to LD I would consider it....how about the kids sharing an apartment? I am sure we can get 7 others that would want to share the same apartment and we can have OBN cook for them (oops... I did it again )

From what I hear, there are circumstances in this case that might lead to MJ being interested in spite of the pay cut. Apparently he has grandkids in the area. While he would like to continue working with young men, he wants to stay close to his current home and the grandkids. That really narrows the possibilities.

And he has always been in it for something besides money.

As to cooking for your stable of boys not in the job description, around here the boys call me "Dorm Mom" no cooking in that title maybe because they know I am good for group dinners at Wingstop, Fuddruckers or Pizza Hut..........

Summer is going Great.........haven't been referred to as a maid, cook, bottlewasher all summer,,,,,,,,,and I get to spend my days in the sun enjoying baseball,,,,,,,,life is good......glad no punches thrown on your end but the dating part is a bit scary as I thought you were holding out for me all this time...

Stalker? Naw, my wife just was waiting to hit that $3 trifecta in the last race for $750. That nearly paid for my son's summer team.

BTW, I heard housing prices in LD took a 3% jump in the last 4 hours with the influx of the rich people moving in from FM/Coppell.

Me, I'll be happy to watch my son play for Coach Stramp one more year. He's not flashy, or highly touted, and he seems to get the job done year after year. My son really likes him, and that's all that matters.

I have a daughter at SHSU, and with the fee's that are tacked on to tuition, it's appaling to me that they are only paying their baseball coach that amount of money.
