I'm new to the site and have a question about recruiting.

My son is about to start his second year of JC ball. He was first team all-conference and first team all-nor-cal. He also played in the sophomore showcase, but we haven’t heard anything for any colleges and registration in going on now and close soon.

How should we proceed with this process I don’t want to over step my boundaries as a parent but, when other players are getting letters and visits, what should I do?.........we are starting to get worried.

Any advice will be helpful

If it were my son I would have him do the following: Start sending applications to to schools that he would like to attend if baseball comes to an end, Talk to the JUCO coach and ask what his true feelings are. I spoke with a young may yesterday in the same situation and he only wants to play at a "big time" school. This young man wants nothing to do with playing at a mid to low level D1. His coach told him that unless something changes he will probably become a true student after his soph season.

Welcome Bulldog.

Very surprised if there is nothing cooking behind the scenes, but here are some suggestions...

Mine was in the same boat at CA JC...

Don't panic. A great deal of CA JC recruiting goes on in the spring and into the early and often very late summer, The recruiting time frames are not always the same as the HS's. It is amazing what happens toward he end of the JC season and in the summer with respect to players from JC's being recruited. It is a hard wait for those not tabbed in the fall, but it does heat up, particularly with your sons credentials.

Check with your son see exactly what he know's. Have your son specifically talk to his college coach to get some insight into what he see's. Get an honest no nonsense read. Often things are going on that you may not know about. With your son' credentials there is certainly soemthing happening. If you have to, or want to I would do it myslef with my son's blessing.

Become proactive, have your son start idenitfying schools and have him start contacting coaches of schools that are good/likely academic and athletic fits. I would look for some "dreams" some likley candidates and some slam dunks. Prorgams like to know that your son has interest in them, with your son's credentials he should have some real clout.

The worst case scenerio is that your son gets left out of the education process. We were in the same situation and we had him apply to a number of schools that we as a team figured were fits...again dreams, good candidates and slam dunks. This gives you peace of mind at the academic level as he has a backup plan if everything else falls through. Worst case scenerio is that he can walk on.

In CA at this time with the budget mess college coaches are caught in the squeeze, last year they could get players in late. There is not telling if this will be the case in the future. We were told on good authority to apply to some schools, use eith the application as a good faith show of interest, and/or get accepted and use that as a chip to help grease the process.

Hi!
Many state schools here in Texas cut off applications in January or February. Getting one or two applications in early will keep your son's options open in case baseball doesn't work out. Also, many academic scholarships have separate fall application deadlines.
Ask questions about the application process for the schools he's most interested in, find out when their deadlines are, and try to get him to apply to at least one school this fall as a back up plan. Better safe than sorry.

Bulldog31,
As observer44 said don't panic, spring time is when a lot of schools start looking for players. Last year about 8 players were picked from just the J.C.'s in the east bay area about 1/2 way through the season and several after the season and all went to good D1 and D2 schools. One was picked up by a preseason D1 ranked no. 5 school.
What conferance is your son in in Nor Cal?

To follow up on the JC timeline...

...while some CA JC's do have players signed in the fall, and Bulldog Jr certainly has the solid credentials to do so.....

Using my son's JC (a competititve one in SoCal) from last year as an example...12 sophomores...not one recruited/signed in the fall...but every healthy player (10/12) is on a fall baseball roster someplace...5 at DI....

Whole lotta stuff happens late.

Cool

I don't know anything about your son, however a discussion with his JC coach is in order to get a feel for he thinks your son can play. As 44 stated many d1 and d2 coaches look at players during the season and even into summer. Some of these coaches are reluctant to recruit early as they won't know what positions they'll need JC help from until later in the season.

A good spring should get the attention of alot of schools/scouts..... assumng your son's JC is playing a good schedule.

Either way, I would start filling out applications so as not to be stuck with no school in the fall. You can apply at several cal states with one application.
