Excuse me while I get a tissue, and weep for the NCAA.
For many years there were 3 organizations running college sports and making loads of money for their school & conferences, stock shareholders and abundant legal staff. The NCAA, College Presidents, and the media (ESPN, etc...) were that 3 legged stool for many, many years. The rules were the rules to protect these 3 orgs, and least of all the students participating in college sport. Most student-athlete appeals & lawsuits were met with a stern "no". That all changed with the Ed O'Bannon case in 2014.
Now, the NCAA has become the legal whipping boy for everything "student-athlete" related. After all they came up with the phrase "student-athlete" in the 1950s to protect themselves from Worker's Compensation claims. Now, the NCAA is crying "uncle" and turning to the government & courts for help because every move the NCAA makes results in a lawsuit. They've boxed themselves in, and their business partners (College Presidents, ESPN, etc) are looking the other way. Irony is all that is left.
