Conference 5:

Oakton will host the winner of Friday's quarterfinal between No. 3 seed Herndon (8-9, 6-4) and No. 6 Westfield (6-13, 0-10) in the semifinals on Tuesday. Chantilly (15-4, 8-2) is the No. 1 seed, and will host the winner of No. 4 seed Centreville (11-7, 5-5) and No. 5 Robinson (9-11, 4-6) in the other semifinal. The conference championship game is a week from Friday at Westfield.

Does this mean Battlefield does not proceed to the Regionals?

No. The conference sends two teams.  Patriot is in due to winning the regular season. Battlefield can get there by winning the conference tournament OR coming in second if Patriot makes it to the conference tournament final.  Simply, Battlefield needs to beat Osbourn Park on Monday and needs Patriot to beat Stonewall.

Did Battlefield forfeit last night's game?

Trying to validate that Jake Agnos, one of the best pitchers in the Northern Region, pitched 15 total innings in a 7 day span: 8 vs. Patriot on 5/12 and 7 last night. If this is true, then it would violate VHSL pitching guidelines. I have to think the coach miscalculated.

Is it also true that the pitcher threw over 200 pitches over those two games?

Upsets a plenty in Patriot District.  Both Annandale and WestPo are out, and TC and South County in, respectively.  Tomorrow night, Lake Braddock plays West Springfield and TC plays SC.  In theory, good for Liberty District as Patriot and Liberty will match up in first round of regionals.  But as we know, this is why we play the games and love baseball!!

And if I read the bracket correctly, either SC or TC will receive a #2 seed in the regionals from Conf 7.

Confirmed by InsideNOVA.com, except for pitch count. Hoping that the pitch count number (over 100 for each of the last 2 games) is not true.

I think that the article stated that 213 pitches were thrown between both games.

I'm not going to get into the rules violation, and all that stuff.  However, while the total number of pitches on its own may appear to be somewhat concerning, the other side of the coin is this:

* he pitched in only one game each week

* he had 5.5 days rest (depending on how you personally view days of rest.  Some would say 5, some would say 6)

* he averaged 14 pitches per inning, which, on its own, would not seem to be very stressful

I think if you looked at every pitcher who threw a complete game at the high school level, they would throw between 90-120 pitches to do so.  15 pitches an inning would put you at 105.  Double that, and you're at 210, which is basically where he stands.  I don't find that to be incredibly concerning, when viewed thru that lense.  Now, if someone threw 100 pitches EVERY TIME OUT, and mixed in the occasional 120+ outing...that's altogether different.  He may indeed be on the fringe of what would be considered acceptable.  I just don't know that what he's done should be considered egregious.

I think it's easy for us to look at data on paper and form an opinion.  Most often, additional context is needed.

The TC-Annandale game was a pretty wild affair, suspended Monday night in the bottom of the 7th with TC holding on to a one run lead, 4-3.  When the game resumed on Tuesday, Annandale tied the game in the bottom of the 7th, and TC won it in the eighth, 5-4.  A lot of really nice baseball by both teams, and kudos to the Annandale center fielder on one spectacular play and one really nice play on two hard hit balls.

Agnos had a stellar performance - no taking away from that regardless whether it is recorded as a W or an L

Wow - that is a lot of pitches.  I am not sure how a coach is thinking of the kid's well being first and allowing his arm to go through that wear and tear.  Yikes.  I bet his future college coaches are cringing seeing him being used so much.

I witnessed both performances by Agnos + my scorebook has:

Patriot on May 12th - 8 innings

50 balls, 74 strikes, 124 total

5 BBs (3 in 8th) 8 Ks

Osbourn Park on May 18th - 7 innings

23 balls, 69 strikes, 92 total

1 HR to 1st batter, then 21 straight Ks

I've never seen anything like it, probably wont ever again.

Completely agree with you: average number of pitches per game this Spring season is the important metric.

I know you've got the smiley face and are joking but if you think about it the kid throws 75% strikes and ends up with 21k's in 22 batters on 92 pitches.   Essentially he ended every at bat in 4 pitches with 3 of them strikes.

Obviously, the problem wasn't putting it in there...it's the guys with the sticks not hitting it except the first guy who will have a nice story over time.
