Actually, the game was MUCH closer than the final score through 4 innings, and Madison only had 5 hits all night. They appeared to be very conservative with the swings, taking many strikes, which is why our pitcher struck out 4 in the first 2 innings. Hayfield had several really painful errors that allowed a mess of unearned runs and did not get it done with the bats. Great night for baseball and glad the lightning and rain stayed away.

Hayfield won 5-4 over McLean bottom of the 7th when McLean, who had played solid defense all evening, made back-to-back errors and had a wild pitch. Earlier, Hayfield allowed 2 runs after SS error on a routine grounder with 2 outs (the only error). In the first inning, a likely run was taken away by a blown call at 1B on a double play (next AB walk followed by a double). Will Miles pitched a complete game for Hayfield.

Chantilly over Osbourn Park 9-3 last night powered by a grand slam and 5 RBIs from Forrest Wagner and 6 strong innings and 10 Ks from Jared DiCesare. 2017 hurler Jack Fitzhugh closed it out for Chantilly in the 7th. Did not get to see 2017 Kyle Whitten throw for Osbourn Park but their SS (Justin Brown??) showed he is a threat with his bat, speed, along with a live arm to boot. He is a gamechanger in the leadoff spot.

Chantilly over Centreville 3-2 today as a pitcher's duel broke out between Centreville's Kyle Barnes and Chantilly's Jack Fitzhugh, who was relieved by Hayden Dux. Key hits by Chantilly's Jared Enders and Cameron Boddie led to Jared DiCesare's walk-off infield single to seal the win for Chantilly.

Glad to see Jack Fitzhugh do well. His dad has worked his tail off for Chantilly LL.

Madison over Oakton today 12-4. Warhawks hit throughout the lineup and Joe Rizzo hit a towering homer to right field in the top of the 6th for Oakton. He also walked twice, once intentionally.

They're very good. And when you give a good team 7 walks, 2 HBPs, and a balk, you should lose. The real good teams are the ones that pound you when you make mistakes.

The only thing that can stop Madison is a lights-out pitching performance. An excellent opposing pitcher outing won't cut it: it'll have to be something special.

Given my son's team played them to start the season and I've followed them pretty closely, I have to say that as far as walks go, part of Madison's undeniably successful approach to winning HS games seems to be to drawing as many walks as possible. In short, they burned through our best pitcher by taking pitch after pitch after pitch, often getting into a hole (which is why he struck out 4 of the first 6 batters). I wondered why they kept their best hitters on such a tight rein given they were clearly a better team than Hayfield, pretty much the entire game. And yes, they clearly could hit. They were also great at spoiling marginal pitches in a deep count to raise the pitch count steadily. Excellent team.

So yes, it would take an uncommonly "on" pitcher to do well and go the distance with Madison, getting loads of first pitch strikes or perhaps an umpire with a very loose SZ, otherwise they will raise the pitch count and knock him out. So you better have two...

A match-up against Agnos might be needed to take down Madison but we will have to see how the postseason brackets shake out to see this.

It took 130 pitches and 8 innings last year for him to be removed from the game with the score tied 1 -1.  I am sure it will be in the back of his mind, if they make the playoffs again this year.

Who would have thought of such an amazing batting strategy.  Disciplined batters, looking for their pitch to hit, not swinging on marginal pitches unless the have to swing, getting on base with walks.  Sounds like a movie.

Yep. But makes for some boring baseball from a fan perspective, especially when they are clearly the better team. But that's just me...

Stone Bridge over Chantilly tonight 6-5. Brett Kreyer overcame a shaky 1st inning that saw Chantilly jump to an early 3-0 lead. However, he settled nicely and kept Stone Bridge in the game through 5 innings where Gary Fuller took over to shut down Chantilly's offense. Forrest Wagner & Jake Pasquale both pitched well for Chantilly. Brady Ryan led Chantilly's offense going 3-for-4 with a triple, two singles and 2 RBIs. Chantilly will start conference play at Westfield on Friday at 6:30pm.
