Tyler Jumper's a big part of that team, both on the mound and at the plate. Losing him was the big blow to their season.

No doubt.  It seems that the error in the plan was to rely so heavily on one player. They have a strong core of players coming up so it seems inevitable that Robinson will do better in subsequent years.  It should be interesting to see.

Dramatic Woodbridge-Hylton Ending Under Protest

By Joey Kamide

May 10 - Friday night's game between C.D. Hylton and Woodbridge is under protest by the Bulldogs, who claim two Virginia High School League (VHSL) rules were broken when Vikings senior Garret Richey failed to touch home plate after an apparent walk off single by sophomore Scott Morgan.

With the game tied at 1-1 with two outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, Morgan hit a base hit to right field for what would be the game-winning run. But Richey did not touch home plate before joining his teammates in a celebration at first base, and it wasn't until his teammates and coaches made him aware of this did he run back towards the plate, sliding in ahead of a tag by Hylton's Trey Shepard.

The Bulldogs (11-4), who had an eight-game winning streak snapped in the loss, are appealing that two VHSL rules were broken: by Richey for removing his helmet during a live-ball situation, and by the Vikings (10-5) for charging the field, thus obstructing the play as Hylton's Kyle Stokes attempts to relay the throw to Shepard.

Officials from 6A Conference 4 and the VHSL are reviewing Hylton's appeal. Should the game-ending play be overturned, the contest would pick up in the top of the eighth inning tied at 1-1.

Anything come of this appeal?
The penalty for a first offense of removing a helmet is a warning, so that seems an unlikely basis for an appeal.

The possibility that celebrating players caused interference seems more plausible, depending on who did what where.

Is the runner, who missed home plate, ran to first to celebrate with the team, and then slid into home from first base, safe?

I think so, but hope a more experienced umpire will weigh in.

The rules say a player who misses a base, including home plate, is allowed to return "immediately" but it is not specified whether "immediately" means immediately after the missed touch or immediately after realizing the touch was missed.

If he's still on the field, he is subject to a live ball appeal by being tagged, which leads me to believe he can still try to return. If it's a dead ball or he has left the playing field, he can't try to return.

The defense has the opportunity to try to make the play as long as the pitcher and infielders haven't all left the field.

Not that I know of but I have it from the coach:

1st Round - 5/15

Semis - 5/19

Final - 5/22

Assumes no rain outs obviously.   Only seed lock up at this point is the 6th seed.  Rest of seeding depends on tonight's results.

Any updates on the schedule for this weekend?  Thanks.

From the OHS web site:

Oakton will host the winner of Friday's quarterfinal between No. 3 seed Herndon (8-9, 6-4) and No. 6 Westfield (6-13, 0-10) in the semifinals on Tuesday. Chantilly (15-4, 8-2) is the No. 1 seed, and will host the winner of No. 4 seed Centreville (11-7, 5-5) and No. 5 Robinson (9-11, 4-6) in the other semifinal. The conference championship game is a week from Friday at Westfield.
