How about those snowboard, spinny, baggy-looking "athletes"? I admit, I can't do what they're doing, but that doesn't make it a sport.
My teen-age daughter says they're trying to attract the younger generation to the Olympics by adding these events. Pretty insightful on her part.

On top of that, in figure skating among other Olympic sports, if have to have a certain "standing" or be "well known" to score well on the subjective stuff. They were saying the girl that is replacing Michelle Kwan can't win a medal because she score enough since she doesn't have "standing".

Many years ago, on a business trip to England, I had a window seat as I flew into London. I thought there was something weird about that country and I didn't figure it out until I was flying out at the end of the trip.
There were no baseball fields!

Isn't it only obvious that sports such as Grand Prix snowboard racing and mixed curling that have such worldwide appeal and huge fan bases would be included...
and that a minor sport practiced seasonally, by a few minor countries with no real fan base would be banned...?

Personally I'm glad to see curling in the olympics, how else could a middle aged fat guy still dream of being an olympian.

Yeah, but we kicked some Danish butt in women's curling today!!! Guy I work with says he loves that sport,mainly because he never gets to see a women using a broom around his house!!!

Our one American gal in the pairs figure skating or ice dancing or whatever the heck it's called is one of the most beguiling women i have ever seen!!
Lets see Krak, I had to check what beguiling means and this is what I came up with:

The outcome of a baseball game is decided by the score,it is not judged by the ump.Boxing is only judged after the boxers fail to determine the outcome, and even that can be problematic.
I agree if it is judged it aint a sport.Take the mogels - why not make that just a race with two small jumps. Or Ski jumping. I really dont care if it is a pretty telemark landing or not, how far did you go? Ice dancing is figureskating with a the really hard stuff removed...But the American Gal IS a Hottie.

I don't watch the winter olympics, but I would like to know when the ice dancing occurs.
Three thoughts. #1 Ice dancing isn't a sport.
#2 Stylemismatch, lets keep the middle aged fat guys (myself included) out of figure skating, ok? #3 How can 10 seconds in a half pipe be enough of a sport to be worthy of an olympic medal? I thought it was ridiculous how much my daughter practices for a 2 minute cheerleading routine, but these snowboarders blow that away.

I'm amazed at all the insulting comments I am reading here about the sports at the Winter Olympics. I think people on this site are getting brainwashed by the constant media barrage that the only athletic events worth watching are basketball and football.

The Winter Olympics are a celebration of all the sports that people in the northern part of the world love and participate in throughout their lives. They take place on snow and ice for obvious reasons. I don't understand the indifference to them. Who here hasn't gone sledding after a good snowstorm. I love the bobsled and the luge. Those skiers on the downhill are thrilling to watch. I also enjoy the speed skating, Hockey, Biathlon, cross country skiing and even the curling.
This is a chance for all of us to embrace the amateur athlete. These are people we actually have something in common with and can relate to. Most of the athletes that make up the Winter Olympics come from small towns in America, tiny hamlets in Canada and small villages in Europe. They are young, daring and fearless. They take on the harsh weather to practice their craft. It takes a robust individual to practice in freezing temperatures for hours on end. How do they endure? Easy. They bring with them a culture that prides itself on its success through hard work with honor. I believe it takes those same qualities to succeed at baseball.(Which is why I am surprised at the disdain for the Olympics here.)

I think it is fine that the Olympics have added new events like snowboarding and the halfpipe. Sports are always morphing anyway. Don't we in America now have Arena Football, Indoor S****r and the X Games.
I am going to continue to enjoy watching these young daredevils and artists. They may not be 7 feet tall or 300 pounds but they represent the best of what sports and athletes should be. For those of you who wish to continue to fawn over the same mundane sports with the same overpaid, selfish, overhyped, thuggish megaduds who don't even care about their own fans, enjoy yourself.

There is no way these are amateurs. Guys like Ono and Miller have sponsorship deals and that pay them hansomely before they ever compete in any event. Back in the day, yes they might have had to work on a farm or at a hardware store to pay their way, but no more. I have nothing in common with these guys any more than I do Terrell Owens.
Mike F, there are quite a number of baseball fields in England (insert History of Baseball From British Rounders story here).....and in Italy, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, The Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria, Russia....

I give credit to those that are good at it, they have the skill, but as Joe Torre said when comparing the two " I could bat over .300 hitting a moving ball at 90 plus miles per hour and still can't break par hitting a ball sitting still"

you have a good point but look at tiger hes in tip top shape and hes the one finishing first and daley is the one not even making the cuts it takes alot of practice and physical conditioning to not hurt yourself and play a good game but i was just wondering what made u feel that way about golf and you told me.. thanks for the response

Many of us who are older remember the day when the Olympics were a patriotic event and we watched the games whether we were a fan or not because it was the "thing to do" every 4 years. Now we question ametuerism and you don't even see all the medal presentations and anthems. That I feel has turned many people off. I like the Olympics because I like to see hard work rewarded with the opportunity to display it. I would never watch the snow boarding or ice dancing world chapionships but put together multiple sports in one venue where the worlds best are competing and I can find entertainment there.
