Parents who spout "team, team, team..." Every parent cares more about their own son than the team or they aren't much of a parent. The only reason you care about the team is because your son is on it.
How's that for not being politically correct?

The hell cares how the ceremonial **** before the game goes? The players don't. The managers don't. Most of the time the fans don't. Even "Back in the Day", those guys were only throwing out the ceremonial first ball so that they could get noticed by their constituents. Imagine if those clowns back then had CSPAN...
"Back in the day" it was only done in opening game of the season, not every game. I agree that it's an utter waste of time.

Yeah, well, I don't care if it is from the mound, from the first row of seats, or on the lawn of the White House. Any man who doesn't know how to throw a ball is automatically suspect.
Remember John Kerry's first pitch? Embarrassing. So was Obama's.

How refreshing! Someone's actually being honest about this. Kind of ironic that the strongest proponents of the "team" concept are parents of the stars and starters...

Not exactly the point of this thread, I will grant, but it reminds me of when we were at the Ripken facility (in Myrtle Beach) this past spring; I had the opportunity to talk to a number of umpires that were working the high school games there. Several of them were getting in their "spring training" preparing for officiating minor league games (Gulf Coast League, as I recall). They were enthusiastic, well prepared (moved to the right position to make a call) and called great games. In short, they acted like professionals in the best sense of the word. They weren't too important to do things the right way...

MLB pitchers wanting a new ball everytime they throw one in the dirt.
They don't have to ask, it's automatic, even in Minor League ball above short seaason. Catcher just puts his hand up and the umpire places a new ball in it.
Okay, let me rephrase my original pet peeve.
The act of replacing a baseball the instant it touches dirt.
If I were the pitcher, I'd want the ball that is brown and dinged up. Think Gaylord Perry ever threw out a dirty ball?
I've wondered about that for years -- wouldn't a major league pitcher WANT to have a scuffed ball to work with? Seems like his catcher is doing him a disservice by immediately asking for a new ball. What am I missing here?
Called from the stands to the pitcher: "JUST THROW STRIKES!"
HS administrators that won't let volunteers work on the fields (for free) however they turn around and say they can't make any improvements due to "lack of resources".
A baseball bat that cost $400
Do we really need 9YO "National Championships" or "World Series"?
Youth league politics
Umpires that create "their strike zone". I once had a HS umpire tell me that he will give a pitcher the "outside strike"... I bit my tongue but wanted to scream back that it wasn't for him to give or take... just call the strike zone as it was created!
Excessive days off in the post season
Those that like to be rude but then defend it by saying "hey, I just tell it like it is"
Fan-boys that pontificate their views on a player or team when they have never seen them play (check out milb message boards )
Parents of HS players that feel the need to tell the coaches what a great job their kid is doing.
The parent that ask you how your kid is doing only because they want to go on a ten minute update of what their "Johnny" has been up to.
I better stop now...

LOL Prepster - Even worse - Called from the dugout - "Throw strikes."
Endless pre-game hype for any major sporting event. Who needs 6 hours of talking heads before the Super Bowl. Especially after two weeks of continuous coverage from ESPN. Just show me the game.
A pet peeve and IMO should be outlawed... Radio commercials that include sirens or a horn blowing.
Very annoying driving along and all of a sudden hearing the blast of a horn or siren before realizing it's just part of a commercial on the radio. Can't believe they even allow that. Also don't like the doorbell ringing in TV commercials.

It peeves me that posters ***** about what pro players earn salary wise--if the owners want to pay that $$$ why not take it--

Just generally speaking myself. I don't like booing errors or mistakes or poor performance as long as the player or team is giving their best.
I did boo when Joe Torre mentioned McCourt after the last Dodger game.

That's right I heard they were having disputes. This is something that you can try, it works well:
ChannelSurfing.net
-- fields in the middle of nowhere without bathrooms or port-a-potties.
- tournament play-off games with strict unrealistic time limits.
-- "Just throw strikes."
-- parents who never lift a finger in four or more years* to help with the fundraiser, senior day or the end-of-season banquet (*more than one kid on the team)
-- paying thousands of dollars in team fees, plane tickets, hotel, car fees, etc. and then getting hit up for more money at the tournament gate
-- parents who complain loudly, to you, about the coach and other people's kids
-- coaches who scream and yell at every little thing but limit their praise to two one-syllable words
-- parents who cheer loudly when their kid's team is winning by a lot and the losing pitcher walks a kid, or a player on the opposing team makes an error
-- baseball treated like an ugly stepsister compared to football and basketball by many schools

Coaches and parents who preach to players about character and integrity and "representing the program in good ways" and then...
- promote a kid from JV to Varsity when the only thing he did all season is tell the coach to f*** off;
- scream to a kid returning from Tommy John that he's a "mother f***in loser" because his first two batters walked and doubled; then sit him for rest of the season;
- sit in the stands and openly criticize all of the players' errors (except of course, the many made by his/her own child);
- complain to the travel coach and ask for a refund because there not enough fall games scheduled, but then not show up to the games/tournaments that are.

totally agree with the commercial.. frankly its caused me to almost have an accident once or twice...
on the baseball side my pet peeve is pitchers who never work on their "pop" time to home. Guys your catchers have no chance no matter what their pop time is when you cant stop the runner from getting a great jump b/c you are slow to the plate from the stretch.
Do any of the TB coaches here work on this with their pitchers?
Sorry.. catcher's dad here :-)
Catchers and ex-catchers who don't realize that a pitcher's #1 job is to pitch, not to make a catcher's life easier.
Ask Jared Weaver, almost every top closer, etc., etc. how important being quicker to the plate is compared to throwing better pitches. Sure if a pitcher can be quicker to the plate without hurting his ability to pitch then he absolutely should. If he can develop a good pickoff move then he absolutely should. However, it should never be done at the expense of throwing better pitches.
I played with a guy who had one of the best moves ever in baseball. It got him a callup back to the bigs so he could work with Vida Blue. Vida Blue had a very successful career. The guy I played with got a cup of coffee and has done a great job as a pitching coordinator. I'm thinking the stuff is more important than the move.

Coaches who try to make power pitchers work backwards or try to make finesse pitchers work forwards.

if you dont understand the value of keeping runners from advancing into scoring position then there isnt much else to say other than my point being its a feature of a pitcher's skill set that gets little to no attention in my experience. If its all about the stuff then pitch from the wind up with runners on... game hasnt evolved that way tho has it?
.. has nothing to do with making a catcher's life easier... easier isnt in the vocabulary of a catcher.. its about helping your team win.
Parents or other people who act like the only reason my son has had any succcess pitching is because he is a lefty. Granted he has an advantage, but he does work hard at it.
Parents who whine about their kids playing outfield. This one is just funny. Since my son is not a huge power hitter, he pretty much only plays outfield when not pitching. I always want to say "my son not too good to play outfield, neither is your kid."

I'll second that and go one further... a commercial with the sound of someone slamming on their brakes and a crash sound... usually for a collision shop or insurance company
Parents who make excuses for their kids miscues. It can never be Johnny's fault, something or someone always got in the way or hindered his ability to show his true abilities.
fillsfan, your post reminded me of a story my momma told me just yesterday afternoon.
Ya'll might have heard it, but it was new to me, and entirely appropriate in the baseball world.
She told me about a conversation with a proud band member momma, who told my mother, that, 'her band member was the 'only one in step' during the band performance Friday night at the football game...........

Umpires that try and take over a game, hey guys its not about you
I like the one about the scouts putting down their guns after a couple of pitches, if its any consolation, the college Jr. choose kept their gun up and saw the good stuff. Son cant wait to pitch against the schools from the "chatty" scouts.
Missed swings on a 3-0 count.
Travel ball coaches that still play daddy ball.
High School coaches that throw their starters well past reasonable pitch counts.

Not being able to go to a vacation spot the doesn't have a baseball field for 12 yrs.
Driving for a hour or more and sitting down to watch a game and starts raining in the bottom of the 2 inning after all the weather reports say that it was only going to be overcast and no rain.
Weather forecasters, Dopler radar and internet weather reports.
Coaches that love having players wear white pants on red clay dirt fields then complain because their catchers knees and bottom of the pants are slightly pink.

Gotta agree with BothSportsdad on this one. If the pitcher can't be bothered to quicken his move to the plate, then he better be good enough to keep all the hitters off first base.
Otherwise, every base hit and walk turns into a double.
Spoken like a catcher's dad.
Sorry but you didn't take the time to read my post. I said that pitchers should improve their moves as long as it didn't affect their pitching. If holding a runner results in poorer pitches it isn't a good trade. It isn't a matter of "can't be bothered". It is a matter of having developed a motion that allows for velocity and command and not wanting to mess it up.
How many righties can have a move comparable to a lefty in any case?
How well does Jared Weaver hold runners? He'd have to make significant compromises to his motion to hold runners well. It just wouldn't be worth it. I'll admit that most lefties should have decent moves, but I'm sure there are lefties that would end up trading velocity or location for holding runners better and they shouldn't.
Holding runners is a small part of the game. Any pitcher who learns to hold runners well will be a better pitcher. However, no pitcher is going to go from average to great by holding runners well and no pitcher who is keeping runners off the bases is going to become an average pitcher because they don't hold runners well.
