My 2008 son just finished attending his first PG showcase. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend, but my husband did go and said it was very well-run. After peppering hubby with questions, I still have a few more to ask and am hoping that you seasoned parents out there can help out. (1) 4 teams were assembled from the roster and for some reason, my son's team was tiny in stature and not all that talented compared to the other 3 teams -- although son was taller and performed well himself. Was this a fluke or was there some rhyme to the reason? (2) Son fielded every ball cleanly, made one outstanding play at 2nd, ran fast, hit well, etc., but at this point he's 5'10" and 150 lbs. dripping wet. Based on relatives' sizes, he is projected to get taller and heavier, but we don't know when this will happen. Assuming all skills are equal with another player who is filled out at 5'10, 175, who would get the better rating: the one who is projected to grow or the one who is pretty much all done growing? (3) How long a wait will we have til the ratings are posted? Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My son (an '08) has been to 4 PG showcases. I will try to answer your questions:
1) The #1 thing PG tries to do in setting up teams is balance out the positions. In other words, they don't want 4 SS's on one roster. I have seen at SOME showcases that a number of players from one HS or city are on a team. I am GUESSING that was by request. Bottom line, don't worry about the team make up. PG is looking at individual player performances.

2) I would be interested in hearing TrHit's response to this question. As far as size (and skills/abilities, too) goes, pro scouts look more for projectability, while colleges are looking for "what can you do for me NOW". I am of the feeling that, as a parent (or player for that matter), don't worry about height. As long as your son is eating/sleeping properly, his eventual height is out of his/your control. As he ages/matures, his body will fill out.

3) It has been my experience that it takes approximately 6-8 weeks for PG to post ratings/reports on their website. What event did your son attend? As an example, the Sunshine East showcase finished on June 11. I fully expect the reports to be online in the next week or so.

GOOD LUCK!
JB

We do not compare players and we to not rate and rank players---but I can tell you we had two young men with us this past week in Norwich CT who were totally electrifying in the field-- one was 5-6 and the other 5-7--- all the coaches in attendance were talking about them

We don't need to compare them to other players--they are what they are--excellent baseball players--last year we had a 5-6 leftfielder and he is headed to college to play baseball-- thankfully baseball is a sport where you can be what you are and not worry about size--if you can play your position and have some tools you will get noticed

I always like your posts.

I am aware your organization does not rate and rank players (at least based on what you have posted in the past , and what I have read on your website).

However, Perfect Game does. And that was (partly) what infield08 was asking about. PGStaff on several occasions has stated (on HSBBW) that they don't "discriminate" against smaller players.

In my original post, I should have been more clear. I agree with you, don't worry about size, you can't control it. And if you can play you will get noticed.
What are the criteria to being selected in the PG Rawlings Top Prospect Team? Is it just game time situations evaluation or it also includes skills eval (ie top speeds, top velocities, good BP). Obviously if you are not on the Top Prospect team you wont be on Top Prospect list. Is this mainly from input from the team coaches or from PG scouts or both? Is it safe to assume that being on a Top prospect team your minimum score would be an 8 to 8.5? Thanks! Wink

I assume that the PG Crosshecker rankings would include previous PG tournaments scouted, previous PG showcases and other tournaments like USAB etc.

Everything is considered. Tools, performance, potential, etc. The input comes from all associated with an event. Though the grade/score is usually consistent with other things, it's not that way in all cases.

EG. A player grades out a 6.5, but performs so well in the games (results) that we will sometimes include him to the list.

In the end... It is simply an "opinion" based on as much information as possible from as many of our people as possible.
Hi, PGStaff. I posted this question in another thread, but it fits better here.

Say your player goes to his first showcase and gets his initial ranking. Then he plays in several PG tournaments over the summer and fall, and goes to his next showcase a year later. Does his performance between showcases have any effect on his ranking the next year? Or is his ranking based 100% on his performance at the second showcase?

Never mind! You answered my question the other thread.

Of course, the rational answer is that if he has improved over the summer and fall, then one would think his performance at the showcase will improve, anyway. But I'm just curious about your opinion.
