Ladies, I am hoping some of you experienced baseball moms can help me out. My son(2010)recently received an invite to the PG Mid-Atlantic Underclass Showcase. We didn't request the invite, but he is interested in attending. We are new to this, so I have a couple of questions. First, because he got an invite, does this mean someone actually recommended him, or is he simply on some mailing list? Also, should he attend a showcase in the geographical region of the colleges he might be interested in? After we submitted the forms for this showcase, he got one for the Atlantic Coast Underclass, which is in our home state (NC). It is a month sooner though, and we have a confict. Also, from experience, how do the underclassmen tend to fare at their first showcases and with wood bats?

Thanks for any help/advice!!!

pudgemom31,

Congrats on your son being invited to a PG showcase! He probably was recommended, or had a good showing at another event (tourney, showcase, or even a camp).

It is definitely a good idea to attend a PG showcase, for the exposure it provides when your son receives an online write-up on their site, being seen by college coaches who may attend the showcase, and of course for the experience it gives your son in knowing what to expect at a regular upperclassmen showcase.

Attending any PG showcase anywhere will be worthwhile, as Perfect Game's writeups are very credible with college coaches and scouts. But as you mentioned, there might be some advantage in attending the showcase close to where he hopes to go to college. You can also call the Perfect Game office and ask them your questions. I called before my son attended his only PG showcase (way back in 2003) and they were very helpful in answering my questions about whether a particular showcase was appropriate for him.

Best wishes to your son, and enjoy!

Julie

Thanks, MN-Mom,

I appreciate your response. I do have a couple of other questions...my son is a young 2010 and is just now hitting his growth spurt. Will PG list the height/weight we sent in to them, or will they get that info again? Since we are not going until late Sept. I am betting that the current info won't be accurate.
Also, will PG contact us with any followup info so that we know they received his paperwork, or do we just go on to the event?

I hope I am not asking too many questions, but this is brand new territory for our family. My daughter is a Musical Theatre major (not an athlete!)but that was a "whole 'nother" adventure!!
pudgemom,

Those are good questions. I don't think PG will automatically ask for updated height/weight, and they do not measure and weigh the players at events. If the height/weight listed on the application seems very different from what one of their scouts/evaluators sees, they might mention that in the write-up. Is your son a catcher? It seems like height and weight are not quite as important for that position as some others, like pitcher.

I know that my son received a confirmation by mail, but I can't remember how long before the event and I'm not sure if they will send it right away or wait until closer to Sept.

Coincidentally, I have one son who plays baseball and the other who was a music major (though the music major decided during freshman year to pursue a more employable degree and continue pursuing his passion of music outside of class).

Take care,

Julie
