Son told me last night coaches are thinking he might be able to pitch in late March or early April and they are thinking about not red shirting him. It scares me he might get reinjured and I told him to call his Doctor and talk to him. He says his arm is feeling great, but right now he is only at 6 months on Jan 31st since surgery. So end of March is only going to be 8 months. Does this seem a little early to be back pitching?

Pitchermom,

I have to agree with Docball. It does seem like he would be rushing things. Talk to the surgeon about this. He did receive a rehab schedule, didn't he?

One of my son's had TJ in September and started throwing live the following July. Some thought this was ahead of schedule. I think 9 months is considered the absolute fastest. A full year might be better. But ask the people who really know. It's not likely those who really know are coaching a baseball team at any level.
Pitchermom,

I had Tommy John and threw in my first game at 8 months, 1 inning 15 pitches! I think if your feeling good it's ok to throw that early but you have to realize that your going to want to push it. It was hard for me to stay within myself and not try and force it when I had many scouts in the stands! I'm in my 14 month now and still getting stronger! I'm not back where I want to be. My Doctor said it should take around 18 months! I have had no arm problems coming back that early but I wasn't throwing hard at all. I just knew how to get guys out with a 10mph fastball! laugh. If you have any questions or want to talk just e-mail me at Absfitch@aol.com.

Thanks,

I too think that it would be too early but I will sit back and listen to the experts!! I have another question that I had heard information on that I was not totally sure if it was true or not. Maybe someone here can help!! I have heard that once you have Tommy John's surgery that there is a likely hood that your arm strength will increase and therefore your velocity may increase. Is this true?? Is it a fallacy or fact?

The-right-reason. I am in about Month 8 of my Tommy John rehab schedule and I am scheduled to be throwing off of a mound in mid-may (11 1/2 months) I had the patellar graft, and I have also heard the same thing, that you gain MPH. I do not think it is because of the graft, yet when you are injured you tweak your mechanics and work little muscles and thus become stronger. I have put on 15 lbs in my rehab (At a BULKY 190 laugh) We'll see what goes on but yes Right I have heard the same thing, but I would NEVER EVER wish this rehab and having to watch the game I live to my worst enemy.
