Leyden 1 Maine South 0

A nicely pitched games by both pitchers.

Josh Serrano (Leyden) made a nice catch in right field to prevent one, possibly two runs from scoring.

Big RBI by Cam Stephens in the bottom of the sixth to score the only run of the game.

Leyden moves on to play Loyola.

And, Vito I have a baseball card in my back pocket.

Congratulations to all the teams that are out of the tournament; it's been a memorable season. Good luck to the teams that are still in it.
Highland Park came up a run short and lost to Carmel 1-0, Carmel scoring in the bottom of the 6th with 2 outs.
Both Jordan Siversten (Carmel) and Jon Menke (HP) pitched outstanding games. Siversten held HP to 3 hits while walking 2, hitting one, and striking out 7. Menke walked 2 struck out 6 and gave up 6 hits, working out of jams the first 2 innings. A base running error cost HP a potential run as Joey Pudlo made a great throw from right field to nail the HP runner at third base and end the 6th inning. As a true Cubs fan, it's "wait 'till next year!"

I agree. I will also add that Jordan Sivertsen is an outstanding all around baseball player and somebody to watch through his college baseball career.
There are many other outstanding Northern Illinois baseball players as well. Some graduating this year, some not yet.
Best of luck to all the Illinois 2008 graduates who are continuing their baseball careers in college or pro. I look forward to following all of them.

I was wondering if the selections had even been made yet. If so, when will the be in the paper?
Any info on all state selections?
I'd be shocked if Swank goes after a 100 pitxh game on Monday and 3 days rest for a 2nd time. I think it will be Heesch and Martini. SWank on Saturday with Zagone if trouble.

Krol and Rowan are both in the same position. Why throw Kroll when your other ace has full rest. In a pressing situation they could go to Kroll and the same for Swank.

At this point forget the predictions. Two great teams playing great baseball. Pitching and defense wins championships. This game should feature the best fundamentals around. Plus at least 3 Nequa players and 6 PR players all have played together on the Hurricanes travel teams for years. Fierce rivalry and respect is going to make this fun on all sorts of levels.
The latest I heard was Heesch vs. Rowan. I don't think you will see Swank until Saturday, no matter if the Ridge win or lose on Friday, and even if they need him out of the bullpen on Fri. Martini will be available both games, and then probably Zagone and Baran. For Nequa, I can see them starting Rowan for the first 4-5 innings and then putting Krol in for the last 2-3, plus, starting him on Saturday if they are playing for the state title. In terms of predictions, here are mine:

Ridge 4, Nequa Valley 1

Highland 7, Crystal Lake Central 0

(As much as I would like to see both of my FVC teams win, I don't think CLC has a prayer with Odorizzi on the mound.)
I was fortunate enough to coach Rowan this summer with team Illinois, really a great kid, throws hard almost to a fault, lot of power in that frame, when Rowan tired he was better with more life on his FB. I haven't seen Heesch compete, but have heard some great things about his upside. Should be a great one to watch, looking forward to it.

Odorizzi (32 overall pick) should be fun to watch
Nails, I was thinking the same thing..why no conversation? There is a lot of talk about the PR/Nv game. Watch out for my huskies if they get past Wheaton North. Their 1/1A combo is pretty potent as well with Golz (Air Force Academy) and Glancy (NIU)! If you happen to knock them around, you get Rasley who has nasty stuff. The lineup 1-9 can MASH. Don't throw a fastball to 1-6. It will go a long way! They come from one of the toughest conferences in the state with the likes of LT, Hinsdale Central, Downers Grove North, York, and Glenbard West. There are few easy games with the perennial targets on our back at all times. And they have history on their side. With today's game, OPRF is now tied for the most appearances by a team in the tournament. To top that, we have been there 3 times in the past 7 years. Keep chattering about the other game. We love being the under dog and love that we are getting no press. LETS GO HUSKIES!!!!

Actually Ordizi was hit by a pitch and did not get a single. In fact Highland only had two hits all day neither of what was hit hard. I give the nod to Rock Falls for tomorrow.

Odorizzi was not very impressive IMO. He was sitting mid to high 80's most of the day - not the mid 90's that has been reported. Maybe his arm was a little "dead".

He did pitch well enough to not give up any runs though on 7 hits. He caught a break late in the game. After loading the bases he hit a batter in what appeared to be the first run of the game for CLC only to have the umpire determine that the batter did not make an effort to get out of the way and called the pitch a ball. The hitter eventually struck out on what would have been ball four - a eye high fastball that he couldn't lay off of.
I predicted Prairie Ridge and Rock Falls and I am sticking with that. Prairie Ridge was the best team from day 1 before the year even started. It's hard to go wire to wire like that. I am a little surprised by Oak Park but they always have an easy ride to get to the super sectional. They definitely don't have the Sandburg, Rita, Rice, regional. But it is baseball so you never know.

On a side note, i can't believe Highland won like that. I don't understand how these umps make this call so late in the season, they don't call it all year about a guy not getting out of the way but then in the Regionals, state, etc you see that call all the time. YOu'll see it in the NCAA tourney as well. I think it's a very controversial call to make, especially in the 6th inning of a 0-0 game.
The umpire's call disallowing the batter 1st base on the hit-by-pitch in the CLC-Highland game, defintely stopped CLC rally attempt. It was at a critical point in the game. CLC would have scored the first run on the HBP, and the bags would remained loaded with one out. The pitch simply got away from Ordorizzi and it was a fastball that hit the batter in the ribs above the hip. Given Ordorizzi's velocity, the batter simply had no time to move. THAT what was so suprising about the call!

The CLC fan's were so upset because earlier in the game; Highland's batter was awarded first base on a hit-by-pitch that barely hit him inside ..if fact the CLC pitcher Pollock, thought it did not, and argued that point. In addition the batter made a limited attempt to move out of the way.

All that being said, CLC had opportunities to score after the disputed call and they did not. Pollock pitched extremely well for Crystal Lake and I am sure caught the eye of some scouts. Ordorizzi is the real deal. It was a great game for the fans on both teams. Both teams should be proud of their efforts.
PR 7
Necqua Valley 1

Heesch went wire to wire using his slider masterfully. Many very good defensive plays...Butler at 3rd, Ljundgren at 2nd and Mitroff behind the plate throwing out a runner in the top of the fifth.

Swank with maybe the best at bat in the season ended up getting the wa;l and go ahead winning run, Will Mack again, Ljundgren, Jacoby all had great two out hits to put the dagger in the bottom of the fifth. The story of the game though was Heesch. Great team win...with one more tough opponent to go.
Yeah, he got hit in the upper arm. And I do not believe he stuck his arm out in front of the pitch.

That rule needs to be changed. If the pitch hits you in the batters box, as long as you don't lean into it, it should be a HBP.

There's no reason in the world a batter should have to jump out of the way and squeal like a little girl when the pitcher can't get it over the plate.
