The boards seem slow lately so I thought I would revive this "tounge-in-cheek" topic in hopes that someone might benefit.

Thought it may be helpful to talk about some common problems observed out there and maybe we can discuss them as a community to try and help those so in need. Please feel free to offer solutions or add more problems if you think of them. Here goes...

Performance Problems...

The underachieving power hitter...

My son has not been making solid contact with the ball lately, for whatever reason he has not been able to hit the ball farther than 475 ft. this past month when he routinely hits them over 500 ft. Please help.

The underachieving hitter...

My son is in a slump. We just got back from a tournament and he only had 13 hits out of 19 at bats. I have never seen him struggle like this. Any suggestions?

The velocity thing with pitchers...

My son has never been able to consistently throw above 95 miles per hour. Do you think this will hurt his chances at D1? or.. Since my son hurt his back he has only been able to hit 93 miles per hour on the gun. I hope he recovers properly and gets back to his normal 98 mph.

Starting varsity as a freshman...

My 7th grade son just missed the cut for the freshman team. Do you think this will hurt his chances to play in high school?

In reference to some kid listed by Baseball America...

I don’t know what all the hype is about that kid, my son owns him every time they play.

Recruiting Problems...

My son has so many offers from the top baseball schools we just don’t know how to whittle them all down. Please advise.

There were so many scouts watching our son that our normal view was blocked and it was difficult to watch the game. Would it be disrespectful to ask them to move so that we could still enjoy the game?

Is Stanford a good school to attend both academically and from a baseball point of view?

Academic Problems...

Ever since my son started hanging with the wrong crowd, his GPA has dropped from a 5.4 to a 4.75 on a 4.0 scale.

Do you think majoring in particle physics with a minor in molecular biology would be too rigorous to maintain and still perform well on the baseball field? Would Pre-Med or Engineering be a better option?

We never encouraged our son to play baseball and were always more focused on the academics. I am sure if it weren’t for baseball, he would not have fallen to Salutatorian in his class of 5000 students.

Girl Problems...

My son has had a very difficult time getting his homework done lately. I think am going to have to put my foot down and tell him that no more than three girls are allowed over at the house at any one time.

Does your son ever lose concentration at a game when his cheering section arrives?

Has your son ever found it difficult to accept all the attention he received from being named homecoming king?

I think I can relate. As June is merely 7 short months away Jr. is currently being bombarded with advisors peddling their services and scouts from every MLB team, MLSB, the Seibu Lions, the Israel Baseball League among others, and financial planners wanting to ensure infinite life changing income for his grandchildren's grandchildren. Any tips from the websters on how to, pick an advisor, negotiate the pre-draft deal, maintain perspective, sanity, just keep it real, stop this madness and still have a great spring? Roll Eyes

These are not tongue-n-cheek issues of the players from the top college programs and some HS blue-chippers. My money says players and their parents are constantly dealing with these issues and more. Us folks on the other end Boyds World worry whether we send the '93 wagon or the old pick-up back to school with the boy, if the dental plan will replace those teeth that have fallen out, and if they will have matching unis for the Spring Break beatin's by the big boys down South. Can I declare Eminent Domain for my spot behind home plate when my son pitches? These scouts had never been to one of the High School games until my son came along.
How can I politely let the scouts know who has influence over my son’s decision? The scouts only brought my two daughters Skittles each game, they didn't even consider Grandma's liking of chocolate. How do I tell them that Grandma has a bigger influence then the sisters?
My son, an unsigned senior, has been to every camp program in the SEC, ACC, and to Standford's camp 5 times.

Along with that, he has attended every PG showcase in Florida, Texas, California and Georgia, since freshman year. As of this time, no invitation to PG National, Aflac or Area code has come in the mail. Are there any forms we need to fill out?
Do you think that we are spending our money wisely?
And
What else do you suggest we do for more exposure?

Frustrated!
...and Jr was obviously overlooked for pre-season All-American and the Brooks Wallace Award watch list.

Can y'all tell me the most effective tactful way of letting those organizations know that while those so recognized are extremely deserving candidates, they clearly overlooked and omitted a favorite for many, many post season accolades, and that it would mean so much to his mother, who stacks up every scrap of paper with his name on it? Please help........cry

My wife and I are thinking about having another son. Of course we have submitted numerous samples to the Baseball Genome project. They have assured us that our son will throw 98 and hit bombs by 13. The only questions left are whether he throws right or left and what color eyes he will have. The DNA advisor we hired has already conceived two t-ball all-americans and an eight year old on the Yankees watch list. If he is drafted prior to conception can he have an agent and will this affect his eligibility?

Having a hard time naming the three best players my son has played against on college info sheets, as no one ever looks good who faces him. Would it be OK to leave it blank?

thank you.....that was a 100% reply, except he never faced my kid. Does yours hit em over 600 feet? ?

The question is, does he ever hit them under 600'?
On a serious note....

My 14u son who some of you have met and others have been blessed not to, has a situation. With the holidays coming up, he's not sure what's appropriate in terms of gifts for advisors. He's got 3 of them and not sure what to do. Suggestions?

Also, both Louisville Slugger and Easton want to sponsor him exclusively. He prefers the Easton products but doesn't want to hurt Louisville Slugger's feelings. Any ideas on how we should handle this?

What about cleats? Nike sends him shoes monthly but he actually prefers Adidas. Do D1 coaches pay attention to these type of details?

Finally, a bit of a technical question. He's a switch pitcher and better as a RHP than LHP. He topped out on a JUGS at 87 and had a 0.001 ERA last season as a righty but lucky to break 84 (with a 0.02 ERA) as a lefty. Somebody suggested that when he's throwing lefty, his hat isn't crooked enough. Could that be the difference in his velocity?

Beezer, go with Nike.

After my son beat Tiger Woods 5-4 in 10 straight match play events, Nike threw a great deal on the table for him. My son out of complete unselfishment turned the offer down sighting that Tiger would be then out of a job. He then turned to baseball to break the myth that tall pitchers do not have a chance over the short guy. What a swell kid.

Another serious note; Yes they do, especially in the Major conferences. Do what mine does. Have the Head Trainer black out the "swoosh" and paint in the Adidas stripes. If the trainer balks just use our pet phrase; "Just do your job, huh?"

Sorry I can't help with the crooked lid, but tell Louisville it's not personal, just business.

It's really never too early to practice Big League'n

What do you do when the cleats are WHITE.

rz has found humor and on a roll!
I've taught my 3 year old a slide step and he was under 1.3 sec to the plate before he could even do a sub 7 60. However, when learning the crow hop from the OF he has developed a severe burn from his plastic diaper edge rubbing on the inside of his thigh.

Does anyone have experience with cloth? Is it acceptable or too "old school"?. Are there any diaper pins on the market that we can have his # put on that are safe?

rz,
If your son is 3 and still in diapers, he most likely needs to attend JUCO. I would suggest this option rather than going pro or playing at the D1 level.

What's his GPA, SAT?
