Has anyone used a protective shirt while batting?

My son was drilled by a 87 mph fastball in the back and it started me thinking about finding a protective shirt with padding on the back that would cover the back shoulder blades and the middle of the back.

I'm also wondering how much restriction of movement this would cause.

It would look something like the picture below but short sleeve without padding on the front

That's what I thought.  Which is why this would be worn underneath the jersey and hopefully not be noticed.

But after talking with my son this morning he told me, although it still hurts, that being hit by that pitch won't affect him getting right back in the batters box.  Actually I think he is wearing it like a badge of honor.  I saw the video that my wife made of him being hit and after being pegged in the back he just flipped the bat, caught it, gave it to the next batter and jogged to 1st base like nothing happened. Of course it helps being 6'-1" and 180 lb freshman.

So why does he need padding if he was fine? No way u can wear  that under shirt and it not be noticed. R u sure this is a legit ? Or just wanything to brag about son being a big stud?

Wouldn't be noticed? Doesn't your son use the same locker room as the rest of the team?

Relax!  It's all good.  I started this topic with good intentions but after talking with my son the protective undershirt won't happen.

And just being a big kid doesn't insure baseball success although passing the magical 6 ft barrier is a load off of my shoulders.

Back never bothered me.  Son has been nailed there several times in his baseball 'career'.  It's fun taking pictures of the bruises, complete with the stitch marks.  They are a badge of honor for him.  I worry more about comebackers when he is on the mound.  A blow to the chest or head is much more worrysome to me.

That shirt seems to need more protection down lower to protect the kidneys.

Also my son was hit just to the right of his left shoulder blade so this particular shirt wouldn't have helped in that case.  Also the front padding isn't necessary for a batter, IMO.

But this is all irrelevant since I don't want my son scarred for life for wearing one of these since the consensus of the vocal minority is that he would be ridiculed unmercifully by his teammates.

More armor is an Early April Fool's joke, right?  How about we put the hitters in a bubble instead of more armor.

?

Prepster - From my way of thinking, the batters will seek any advantage including more armor.  The problem ins't the hitters, it is the umpires who aren't calling it.  HItters lean out over the plate and get hit where the pitcher is supposed to pitch it.....shocking result the hitter get hit by pitch.  However, umps aren't calling it at all levels.  JMO.

My vote for this might come if they widened the plate by a foot-and-a-half.

Nah, not even then.

I don't believe pro hitters should be able to wear upper body armor unless it's needed to protect an injury and approved by the league. To many MLBers load up on armor and hang over the plate.

+1 on this. Pro, college or HS. Seems like more line shot comebackers last few seasons in MLB. Hitters are too comfortable... Being allowed to tee off. The natural balance between P and hitter needs to be restored IMO. Protect pitchers.
