I have a friend who believes large catchers were sought by major league teams because their size would intimidate runners from trying to score due to fear of a collision. I realize the plate collision rule has changed and it may be a moot point. Do any of you have any insight on the large size of catchers and if the intimidation factored in?
Do you remember Yogi?
I suggest you ask him, in priority, how he thinks scouts rank catchers as far as required skills?
Yadier intimidates me and I'm just watching on television.
Everybody seemed to fall in love with a "big is boss" body type for a decade. Now I believe it's "can he play?"
I think they like big body types, but not because of any intimidation factor. It has to do with handling the rigors of the job on a day-to-day basis and the pounding they take blocking, etc. There's a perception that bigger bodies are more durable.
