I have a friend who believes large catchers were sought by major league teams because their size would intimidate runners from trying to score due to fear of a collision. I realize the plate collision rule has changed and it may be a moot point. Do any of you have any insight on the large size of catchers and if the intimidation factored in?

Everybody seemed to fall in love with a "big is boss" body type for a decade. Now I believe it's "can he play?"
I think they like big body types, but not because of any intimidation factor. It has to do with handling the rigors of the job on a day-to-day basis and the pounding they take blocking, etc. There's a perception that bigger bodies are more durable.
