Git: Since no admissions decision is a definite, a coach will not take the chance to let a player apply on his own if he wants that player on his team. The players that coaches don't support would be marginal players. I do understand your thinking, but there are no sure admits (even alum children can be iffy) unless student is child of a big big development giver or perhaps child of famous person.

Perhaps Ivy mystique is more obvious in Northeast and larger cities...but for some reason, I am amazed at the reaction my son's school gets - even he is surprised to the extent and many times he just says he attended school in Connecticut. The combination of baseball and the name garners an even greater reaction. I think Stanford has a similar mystique.

btw, sorry for all typos - I have broken wrist so no more touch typing.

NY MOM is right. You just don't know if you will get through the admissions process. What the admission personnel that gave the traveling presentations I attended said "Just apply because we look for special people and you might be one of them". A girl at a nearby high school got into Harvard with a 25 ACT but she had almost 4,000 documented hours of volunteer work.

If you are a 95 mph Lefty there is no doubt the coaching staff will support you. When I talked to the Princeton baseball coach he said he always encourages walk ons because he has been fortunate in the past to get some good players (The wide reciever on the Princeton football team who walked on to baseball as a soph., led the team in hitting and got drafted as a junior). If the school you're looking at has 3 underclassmen catchers and your son is a cather, even a great catcher, don't expect any help. My son was an outfielder and as a junior in high school his hitting coach who played in the majors told him that nobody wants outfielders because the spots go to pitchers first. The excact same thing the Northwestern baseball coach told me. He said I would like to see your son on the team but I can't do anything for him because I need 1 catcher and a lot of pitching.

Again , never say never. Who knows what will happen but if you don't try you will be certain of the outcome. My son is very happy with where he is going but he just hated the recruiting process. Good Luck to all of you in your senior year.
[QUOTE]In Phoenix, an ASU graduate from the Barrett Honors College has an advantage many times over an Ivy grad.

I suspect that the advantage an Ivy Leaguer might have initially comes from an impressive record of accomplishment rather than the mere name of the school.

je...Who am I to argue with anyone.

If you truly believe what you are saying, you don't live in the real world.

I didn't believe TR and NYMOM a few years ago. They were 100% right and I was 100% wrong.

Tough to admit you're wrong when you are as old as I am, but I've dealt with it.
