RR-I wonder sometimes if you realize how you come across with your posts-at least MY perception. I felt the urge to respond when you stated:

"Take my word for it...if the SF 49ers draft him with their OL Reggie will be just another running back that didn't make it in the NFL."

Then:

"Reggie will remain a fine RB and an outstanding athlete, but he is just one man and it takes eleven good ones to allow him to do his thing."

I wonder how you can always be so absolute with your statements as if you are the final word on everything you decide to make comment on?

This is just a "fun" topic and everyone is giving their OPINIONS about Bush and
Young, but when you post it just seems like "OK, here's the final word on this subject and the rest of you can keep your comments to yourself now".

I probably do the same at times but I-and others-normally temper our thoughts
with "In my opinion" or "My 2 cents" or "I think".

In my opinion Big Grin if you would do the same it might help others to look at some of your posts with more of an open mind. Because I do think you have a lot of
good ideas, but they are not always the "final answer".

Ok, let me have it. Smile
RR yes you need a good oline to get to the second level of the defense. But Bush does things once he gets to that second level that other backs do not do. He makes outstanding athletes look silly. He makes people miss, he runs over them, he runs away from them. You dont think there are other great o lines out there with great backs behind them? Of course there are. Are they doing what Bush does? No. He can catch and run , block he can do it all at a level no one else in the game can do right now. When these other powers play cup cake teams I dont see there backs putting up the numbers that Bush is against good teams. When FSU played Duke I didnt see there backs running for 260 catching for 100 and returning kicks for another 75? Hes the best I have seen at the college level period. He will be a stud at the next level. As far as Vince Young there is no doubt this guy is tremendous as well. But no one can dominate a game with big plays and turn nothing into something like Bush can right now. JMO. USC will roll Texas for the NC. Too many weopons on that team for anyone to handle. Sorry Texas fans but you picked a bad year to play for the NC. No one in college football is in there class. No one in college football other than USC would have been able to beat ND at ND in that environment. No more football comments for me its baseball season at the May house.
And while we're on the subject...don't you think Pete Carroll is emerging as one of the great college football coaches of all time?

* Probably 3 of the last 4 Heismans.

* Possibly 3 national championships in a row (never been done in college football).

Not a U$C fan here...but you gotta respect that.

And speaking of coaches...if anyone ever doubted the impact of a good coach I've got two words...Marvin Lewis!

In the Young vs. Lineart question - I take Lineart. and would like to see him in Jets green. He knows how to win.

If you don't think that Bush will be a standout in the NFL, you're probably a big NHL fan and spend most of your time watching hockey. Bush hand all the tangibles and intangibles that add up to greatness. You might not see it immediately, since he's going to be the first pick to a weak NFL team, but as the team improves, so will his numbers. I'm very sold on the guy.

Last time I checked, according to CBS Sports line, USC's Strength Of Schedule is 17 (Texas 12)
Powers like-
Penn State (5 SOS, 3 BCS)
Ohio State (3, 4)
Michigan (1, 20)
Georgia Tech(8, 23)
etc..
-have played significantly tougher schedules than USC. While not taking anything away from Reggie Bush's dominance on the field and obvious athleticism, put him on the team with the toughest SOS(Michigan, who played Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame) and I think his numbers would decline a bit. Just my opinion.

Also, when you play in an offensively-minded conference (Pac-10) as opposed to conferences where defenses are tough week-in and week-out, (Big 10, SEC) you are going to put up huge numbers. Place a player as naturally talented as Bush in an already juiced offense and numbers increase exponentially.

I dont think the "powers" are playing cupcakes at all.

CBS poll w/ Stregth of Schedules
Son of Moc- Typically southeast response. You guys are always knocking west coast teams for being soft and a lack of a defense, Conversely, my take is that offense in the south are unsophisticated and easy to stop. SOS's are inheritantly biased and a bad measure. You can say anything you want but USC is the best team in college football and Reggie Bush is the best player in college football. My point will be proven when Cal comes to Knoxville and runs the ball down your throat with a tough OL and Marshawn Lynch next September. You'll see how soft west coast football will be when you see Cal's defense fly all over the field next year. Remember, it was Cal who last knocked them off and almost beat them last year. Can't say the same for Auburn, Oklahoma, or any of the other tough guys who USC whipped.

The Bullwinkle has been watching Reggie since he was a freshman at Helix high school in San Diego County. The kid just has more moves and more gears than the rest of us humans. During high school I saw him play quarterback, running back, wide receiver, kicker; punt and kick off return….he excelled at all. I saw him toy with the other players, drawing them in, then kicking it into another gear. ( kinda like some buddies of mine, the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, an eternal battle of need versus speed, aggravation versus acceleration)

The Rose Bowl is going to be hyped and over-hyped over the next month; I hope that the game will live up to its possibilities.

Let's hear the reasoning behind why the NFL Southern Cal team was barely able
to beat that powerhouse Fresno State team with 6 minutes left in the game-that same powerhouse team that got their butts kicked by that powerhouse of a
Louisiana Tech team. Big Grin

All joking aside-I do think that SC is the best team in the country with Texas REAL close behind. But NFL caliber????? I believe the worst team in the
NFL would beat Fresno State by 5 touchdowns.
First of all, calbb, I don't like being type-cast as having typical southeast responses. Check my post, I basically gave most credit to Big 10 teams, which aren't in the southeast last time I checked a map. To debate with you on team defenses is pointless, you obviously harbor "west coast bias." The facts speak for themselves. I never said Reggie Bush did not deserve the Heisman. I also never mentioned Tennessee.

The fact is, the numbers don't lie. The top ten defenses in the nation are (according to MSNBC Sports);

1. VT
2. Alabama
3. Miami
4. Ohio State
5. LSU
6. Texas
7. Florida
8. West Virginia
9. Auburn
10. Georgia Tech

The first team USC played on there is Fresno St. (34), and the first PAC-10 team is USC at #40.

I'll take accusations of being biased when the numbers are like that. Now, put USC in a position where they play top 10 defenses every other week and they remain the number one offense in the nation, and I will agree with you on their superiority. As of right now, there is no way to tell.

Also calbb, aren't you the one who said college baseball teams on the west would dominate every eastern regional in the NCAA playoffs? I think you need to check your own comments before calling someone else "biased."

Now please, come back and tell me that the offenses are so amazing in the PAC-10 that they don't need to play defense.

Also, don't get me started on Cal, for all their whining about not getting included in the BCS last year, to get beat like they did against Texas Tech in the Holiday Bowl really boded well for their position.

Of course, like most all things statistical, these numbers only show one side of the coin.
Ironically, while this defensive list is dominated by AC and SEC teams, only 2 teams from these conferences appear in the top 30 scoring teams in the nation.
Think there's a correlation?
There is another great quarterback in the Big 12 that hasn't been mentioned. That is Brad Smith from Missouri. Unfortunately, he was on a very mediocre team and still managed 3173 yards of total offense. Could be the best offensive player in the country. Very similar to Vince Young. No doubt that Reggie Bush is the best running back.
These players are great athletes and well deserving of their praise. It will be an exciting national championship. I guess the folks from Tennesse can pull for the other UT since the UT in TN isn't playing in a bowl this year. Besides, Mack Brown is from Tennessee. I guess that could also give all UT fans a reaon to pull for the Horns!

Not only will Brad Smith NOT be a good NFL quarterback, I predict he'll never throw one ball in a regular season game.

In fact, he probably won't be on an NFL regular season roster. If so, as a receiver.
Agree on Brad Smith. Saw him play once live and number of times on tv - superb athlete. Put him in the USC backfield and his #'s would be spectacular. Much easier to succeed with Heisman rb, NFL size line, and 4.3 receivers.
On Leinart, lots of guys who stay 4 years in football & hoops seem to get downgraded by scouts. They do have one more year to see the flaws but he has proven himself again and again.
Staying might have cost him #1 overall and a few million but if USC rolls to title again hard to question his decision.
Lobo, from one UT fan to another,

"HOOK 'EM HORNS !!!"

Now, looking toward the NFL, my Dolphins finally have a legit chance of drafting a top-notch college QB. So many choices......

Leinart
Young
Quinn
Hodges- TTU (unsure of year)
Croyle- Bama
Keller- Ariz. St
Shockley (possibly...)
and of course.....
Claussen Roll Eyes, kidding...

The list goes on, lots of talent will make for a great draft!
rbinaz-

The only correlation I can make is that if you put those top offenses against those top defenses you would have some great college football! Big Grin

I maintain that until there is a playoff system no one will know who is better. The only reason I brought any of those numbers was to make a point to calbb.

Every team/region/conference has its strengths and weaknesses. Also, dynasties come and go. Maybe in 5 years we'll be talking about how West Virginia has the best team of all time? Iowa State? Kentucky!? noidea

(nothing against any of those teams, simply examples)

I guess this is a foregone conclusion on the Heisman trophy tonight? Archie Griffin seems like he is secure being the only two-time winner. Interesting that Archie had a fairly modest pro career as TR is suggesting about Vince Young.

I don't know if anyone has heard Reggie Bush interviewed or not, but he is certainly saying all the right things. For someone so talented, he has a refreshing amount of humility. He deserves the Heisman on attitude alone. A very fine young man!
TR - trust me: Having watched him play since he was a freshman, Vince will prove you wrong. As I laid out for you earlier, he is head and shoulders better than Michael Vick (both stats & size-wise)- a pretty good NFL quarterback.

As for tonight, Bush will probably win because the national media has hyped him so... that's fine... just more motivation for Vince on Jan. 4!

HOOK 'EM HORNS!
