The term “role model” is used by many as someone who is serving as a positive example for someone to learn from. Ideally it is someone close to the individual and such as a parent or guardian. Some people seem to think that people who are deemed this magical, “role model” status are the only ones that influence people.

We all consciously as well as subconsciously learn behavior from many sources. Nobody serves as the only “role model” or “influence” for a person. Behavior is learned from parents, coaches, teammates, family members, friends, supervisors, fellow employees, teachers and other people we interact with regularly. Influence or behavior is also learned from people that we never interact with on a personal level but come in contact with such as athletes and entertainment and political figures.

While much of this influence is from sources we may not deem as role models, it is still extremely powerful in shaping individuals as well as society as a whole through their advertising, TV programs, movies, music and their soap box.

Bottom line is that we all have a responsibility to present a positive influence in everything we do. It is even more important for the benefit of society that those in a position to influence the masses do so in a positive manner. The vast majority of people can really help out by keeping the people that influence the masses accountable.
SBK you hit the nail on the head. Of course we as parents have a much greater impact on our childrens lives (hopefully), but as you said, there are many who influence us. An elderly church lady who has bravely handled physical hardship with a smile on her face may have an impact far greater than any coach or teacher. A mountain climber who braves umbelievable hardships in an attempt to scale K2 or Everest might be a huge influence. The key is not who is a role model, but that we allow ourselves to be influenced by those we meet. Though we obviously hope differently, a kid who grows up in a gang will have role models much different then we would hope he would have.

Unfortunately, we can't control whether our parents are role model material or not. I'm sorry to say that my dad was about as far from a 'role model' as you can get. Sometimes we need to look elsewhere. I'm 43 years old and still looking...........

And I bet you well know, Krakatoa, that you can learn from bad example as well as good. One of my son's best coaches (a young man who made it to AAA as a LHP), had a set of parents who were dreadful on so many levels. He's grown up to be a caring, patient, funny man with a real gift for teaching and a great love of kids. He says, "I sure know how NOT to do it!"
MOC

It is "music field" not music--the business end of it

Thus

It has a lot to do with undertsanding where and what he is at as well as understanding why the kids like what he does-- I am not saying I like his stuff but I can appreciate where he is coming from---his last album by the way , from a technical aspect, is excellent

I trust that this answers your question

Interesting aspect--SBK dislikes the Snoop Dog genre but he takes the time to search for and then print out the lyrics-- but then, if I remember correctly, his wife wont let him to listen to Howard Stern in the house---

Is SBK an IMUS Fan???

As I said earlier-- I feel that as a coach you need to know what the kids are listening to--thus you can relate to them on their level-- we have all genre of music when we are away on trips--may not like it all but it is the kids music and it aint all that bad

As I type this I am listening to Prince--one of my favorites--doing "Cinnamon Girl"--- aint all that bad

TR,

Someone mentioned snoopdog as an example of influence on kids so I thought I'd provide some factual data.

I posted these lyrics and provided a link to where people can see the actual lyrics of the music kids are hearing. It seems rather harmless when we say our young people are listening to certain entertainers but I believe if most people actually knew what they were hearing, they would be concerned.

Much of the lyrics glorify drugs, beating women and shooting people. What I find disturbing is that many people can’t figure out why kids are killing kids even though that is what the message they are getting through their headsets on a constant basis.

Companies spend millions of dollars hiring celebrity spokesman to get kids to heed their message so it must work. Today, some so called, “entertainers” are selling drugs and violence to kids and appear to be doing a heck of a job. And no, not all kids are buying it, but the weakest among us seem to be and we are all paying a price for it.
I am no fan of Snoop's. I can assure you one thing, I don't want any of you guys telling me what I am allowed to listen to or what my kids are allowed to listen to. I will make those decisions for myself. If I choose not to listen to something, it will be for my reasons not for your political or religious agenda. All my radios and tvs have off switches and my family knows how to use them.
TR,

You write, “Interesting aspect--SBK dislikes the Snoop Dog genre but he takes the time to search for and then print out the lyrics—

I’ll tell you why I took 5 minutes to provide the lyrics.

Because you complimented snoopdog or whatever the thugs real name is by saying …. “his last album by the way , from a technical aspect, is excellent” and which I find as nothing but filth. You can package lyrics about gang banging, woman beating, killing cops, raping women and glorifying drugs with the best beat and melody but it is still trash and a negative influence on society.

TR, I took the time so that others who might not take the time may have a chance to find out what their kids are really listening to. If by me taking 5 minutes of my time results in even one parent taking an interest in what their kids are listening to, perhaps it was the best 5 minutes I could have spent.

Just a few days ago in Northern Minnesota, a kid killed 9 people. It appears that the tribal chief’s son may have been an accomplice. It appears that the tribal chief is a decent enough person but somehow his kid was drawn to be part of the trash that snoopdog and others glamorize.

I wish the chief would have read our discussion a while ago and used it as a catalyst to try countering the negative influences that have reached these two kids. Would it have changed things? We’ll never know but it’s worth my time and I hope other’s time to try.

But who cares about it because it is not our kids who are getting into trouble. After all, we are all doing our “Thing” perfectly in bringing up our kids. But as I mentioned, I’m not worried about ours, I’m worried about the rest who are being influenced by the filth many condone, even if they condone it with their silence.

So TR, I’m not sure what your agenda is by trying to demean me by questioning why I took a few minutes to print out the lyrics. I’m glad you asked because maybe one more parent will take an interest in what is influencing their kids.
SBK

I took the time to print out your last post so I could read it and make notes before I answered you--it is that important to me--you have 8 paragraphs so let me respond per each paragraph if that does not bother you

01--- no comment needed
02-- no comment
03--- I did not compliment the artist--I complimented the technical aspect of the album-- again you do not read--you read into things what you want to read into them-- a product can be fine technically without you liking the content
04-- I really think you knew nothing about what hem Snoop Dog, writes or says--until you dug up the lyrics
05-- I really do not think Snoop Dog or any other individual. me and you included, had anything to do what happened in Minnesota--
06--- The Chief !!! if he had heard our discussion-- PLEASE -- stop the nonsense !!!Negative influences come from ones home environment--you and I cannot save them-=-if you think so God Bless you--
07--- it is not a matter of caring-- it is taking care of my "home fires" first not someone I dont even know-- and with an internet post yet !!!- you have to get real

Your insinuations are taken as they are given-- as I said I take care of my own and that is tough enough--whatever assistance I can give the kids playing baseball is fine with me as I consider them mine-- I am not here to save the world-- you can try if you wish but that boat does not have enough oars
08-- AGENDA !!!!! I have none except to help kid get into college and make a decision that they can feel comfortable with--if you call tha an AGENDA then so be it.

DEMEAN YOU--- you dont need my help--you are doing fine by yourself

By the way parents, not rock stars and athletes, should be influencing their kids--simple as that--if they are then something is wrong--the family fiber comes first

Folks sorry for this diatribe but SBK has overstepped his bounds with me-- either because of ignorance or hatred, I cannot figure it our yet--but I had to respond

On that note it is vacation time from SBK--I have him on ignore

If a rock artist or a start athlete makes a kid go bad then the parent(s) had better look in the mirror because that is a pure out and out cop out--folk as far as I am concerned the BUCK STOPS IN THE HOME--- it is not the rock star, not the star athlete or the coach--face up to your responsiblilites--dont try to save the world-- take care of your own business
Krakatoa,
Please consider yourself attacked. Smile

Just kidding, that was a good point for your comment to be inserted. Most of us go over the line, online at times.

Speaking of over the line...Do kids play it any more?

TR,
OK, I'll admit it. Your last post to me had a bit of humor to it. I was probably only able to recognize it because I lived in NH for a few years though.
