WOW...6 of the top 11 recruiting classes in the nation are in the SEC....

Continuing confirmation that the SEC is the BEST college baseball conference in the country.

Congrats to Coach Corbin at Vanderbilt for his #1 slot.

When he came over from Clemson a few years ago, I said he wouldn't last 3 years before someone else "scooped" him up.

Beenthere,
You're right AGAIN. Baseball America rates them as follows:
#1 Vandy
#2 Ariz State
#3 TX
#4 So. Carolina
#5 UCLA
#6 Tennessee
#7 LSU
#8 Virgina
#9 Stanford
#10 Auburn (War Eagle)
#11 Misissippi (Ole Miss)
#12 San Diego

Many argue but few can prove there is another conference stronger than the SEC.

Fungo,

http://www.collegiatebaseball.com/recruiting/recruiting_results.htm

SC is ranked #1 in this poll. So one is right or wrong depending on the pol you read. Not arguing that SEC does not do a good job in recruiting.

No doubt Tim Corbin has been the best college recruiter in the country (before he moved to Head Coach at Vandy), refering to his recruits he has made #1 round picks over the past years or recruited HS players who were high draft picks and never attended college.

If you insist SEC is the best, let's see how amny SEC teams go to Omaha this year!

can't argue with the strength of the conference,

but a case could be made that the '06 top of the ACC in Tech, Clemson, FSU, & Miami, UNC, would should overmatch the SEC top 5 in Tenn, Fla, & whoever the other 3 would be - maybe UGA, USC, & ?

in '06 you could as easily see 2 ACC teams as 2 SEC

jmo, but tpm has my back

BT,
You have two pools going on here. BA and the coaches poll. You did not state in your original post what poll you were speaking about, if I recall? I wasn't getting into what conference had the best recruiting but that SC was ranked #1 (yes Callaway SC Smile) in another poll.

I also said, JMO, that in the end, it's who shows up in Omaha. And the largest representation did not come from the SEC OR the ACC (no team) this past year.

And we are not talking about RPI rankings but recruiting rankings.

I, for one, would not be laying $ down against the ACC, SEC, Big 12, or even the PAC 10. Think it's kinda funny how our personal experiences can give each of us different perspectives.

Until this year, was trying to figure a way to give the Big East some credibility. noidea Just kidding all you Big East parents,
There ARE some good baseball schools there!!

I thought I said Big12, who had three, don't remember mentioning conferenceUSA noidea

Actually, quite disappointed not one ACC team had representation last year.

This is the biggest week in South Carolina!

Gamecocks vs. Tigers 7:00PM Saturday

GO C-O-C-K-S!!

Callaway,
No comment, yet. CU finally got their stuff together today (it appeared like Dad was giving son a win). I know on the CU boards, things were getting rough for next week, the owner made CU fans stop posting "chicken" stuff. Big Grin
I heard today it is the biggest in state, hate rivalry game in country. Is that why one has to "pay to view"?
I was actually rooting for SC over Florida today!

Moc, No problem.

In case anyone is intrested, DK was very much interested in working under Tim Corbin. But he decided to play under TCs mentor, JL at Clemson. Smile

Forget the game--how about the Military guy who won 1 million dollars throwing a football 25 yards thru a 20 inch hole !!!

Got Bless that young man in many many ways!!

He was a Clemson fan and his Dad, who was with him was a FSU fan--I like the irony of it all

But all you other guys and gals are still in a pissing contest that nobody wins unless the wind blows the wrong way

TR,
That throw was incredible!
Very strange relationships go on in SC. Fathers, mothers attended SC, kids play for Clemson, one sibling plays at CU, another plays at SC, one parent went to SC, one went to CU. makes for the "healthy" rivalry. ACC vs. SEC.
I also found out that many many family ties are between CU and FSU (not just the Bowdens), but that's ACC family ties pull_hair

As far as the match, I stated that I was not sure what Beenthere was referring to, and Fungo said he was right as usual. And I just stated what I based my thouhts on (JMO) for conferenece particiapation and then a comment was made about Tulane. Then Beenthere made comments about the two polls lightening bug vs. lightening. I never said one poll was better than the other, did I?
BTW, collegeiate baseball is very important to many coaches as it is based upon peer poll.

And you seem to be enjoying this, correct?
Being from ACC country I have a great amount of respect for the conference and the quality of the baseball. But the fact is the SEC is the best baseball conf. The ACC is up and coming with the addition of Miami and the traditional powers of Ga Tech Clemson Fla State. Add in the fact that UNC is stacked and NC State is always solid. Duke Wake Va Tech and Maryland are just not there with the bottom teams in the SEC. The bottom teams in the SEC would challenge in the upper level of the ACC. When and if Maryland Va Tech Wake and Duke become more competitive then maybe we can start talking about the ACC being right there with the SEC. Untill then I have to go with the SEC as the stronger overall conference. JMO
I think that some of you have never been west of Dallas. Smile First of all, USC is in Los Angeles Razz and 32% of all the American guys on big league rosters are from California. Smile

Here is my Pac 10 all star team, and I welcome a fantasy game with teams from other conferences.

1B-Mark McGwire
2B- Jackie Robinson
3B- Bob Horner
SS- Troy Glaus (SS in college)
C- Bob Boone
LF- Barry Bonds
CF- Fred Lynn
Rf- Reggie Jackson
DH- John Olerud

RHP- Tom Seaver
LHP- Randy Johnson

Since you are enjoying this thread so much, another bit of info to ponder.

As you all know I am a follower of Boyd Nation. If you go and study his site you will find great info on just aoubt anything.

For instance this year's college rankings should be (I am assuming) based upon all this mumble jumbo stuff like RPI, ISR, SOS from last season, plus the human factor, returning players, new coach, etc. I have provided a link above on how he interprets rankings and how they are calculated, not by him but an explanation of how he thinks it is calculated by those who make the rankings.
What I found most interesting is that the last RPI he posted (6/26) contained the following top 12 for 2005.

Texas
Tulane
Baylor
Mississippi
Florida
Georgia Tech
Clemson
Miami
Oregon State
Cal
Southern California
Nebraska
5 out of 12 ACC/SEC

2002
Clemson
FSU
Texas
Wake Forest
South Carolina
Georgia Tech
Stanford
Houston
LSU
Rice
Florida
Alabama

8 out of 12 ACC/SEC

If you go back a few years to compare all of the RPI,ISR and SOS you will see a shift from east ACC/SEC dominance to the west. I think we had a post on this a while ago regarding that discussion.

As far as the best conference, the SEC is ranked above the ACC, Pac10, Big12 You can't take that away from them. As far as the most powerful ($$) can't take that away from them either. I do believe thatyou also have to give Big12 and Pac10 credit as they consistantly have representation year after year in Omaha.

Just some interesting tidbits for those of you that like to indulge in rankings.

Doesn't anyone read through threads?
Foultip,
I in no way indicated that the ACC is a better conference than the SEC. If so please point that out to me.
The discussion began about recruitng, that the SEC had 6 of 11. And because of that the SEC
was the best conference. Which in my opinion does not make a conference the best, but the end result, building a championship team, year in and year out.
I continued the conversation regarding the dominance in the CWS teams shifting from east vs west.

So what was the point of your post?
Last edited by TPM
I have personally never understood the contstant "debate" on the best conference. If the CWS is the ultimate goal and if the "best" team wins it (big if) then the CWS would be the "benchmark". If you take a look at CWS history, it is not Totally DOMINATED by one particular conference. Perhaps the Pythagorean Record (based on pythagorean theorem-something Boyd looked at awhile back) would be the best indicator of conference. It might be slightly flawed because of the small number of games played. IMHO "best recruiting class" is "perfume on a pig" because the data does not support "best recruiting class"=CWS win.
The team that takes the CWS has a number of "immeasurables" most notably "heart" which as we all know, cannot be measured by any known data!
"perfume on a pig"- Smile. I'll be using that one
down the road!

Catsuremom, totally agree, these recruiting class rankings are something to drum up interest
and give us all something to BS about while
waiting for the season to begin.

Who had the number 1 recruiting classes the last
3 years and where did they end up? Just curious.
BA Dandy Dozen last year
Texas
ASU
Texas Christian
Tulane
GA Tech
LSU
Pepperdine
Oklahoma State
South Carolina
Alabama
North Carolina
Clemson

I can't find collegiate baseball.

ACC and SEC both had 3 teams, none of them off to Omaha.

Recruiting rankings are based upon those highly projected players (and drafted)that teh school signed who attended the first day of class. It is a tool used by recruiters, and is not an indication of being from a better conference or not. If it is, and the SEC were able to retain those recruits, and going to Omaha is a benchmark, I will be looking for those schools to be there this year or next. If not, then in the end those "recruiting" polls are "perfume on a pig".
If Vandy is the top recruiting class for 2005, don't tell South Carloina, as they consider themselves #1.

So again, one cannot determine a better conference based on recruiting.
I am not posting to say which is better, but just posting to give others a fair shot that tehy deserve. Smile
