Should Theo Epstein be the next baseball commissioner?

Can I suggest that he buy the Texas Rangers?  They need new ownership and a new GM.

Considering that my house cat would likely be a better commissioner than Manfred (she’d certainly do less harm to the game), I say:  yes, Epstein would be a great replacement for Manfred.

Or Epstein’s kid, or his Mom, or the dude who cuts his hair, or his Secretary... anyone, please!

I know he expressed interest in being a part of an ownership group. I highly doubt he will have the funds to establish majority share interest but I don't doubt he could put together an investment group as the lead operational partner. Hell where do I send the check?

3&2 nailed it. You could put just about anybody there and they’d do a better job. The question I have would be whether the owners would allow a commish to make the changes that are needed.

I'm sure that Epstein would make a fantastic commissioner, but the job is not worthy of his talent. The commissioner answers to 30 owners, many of whom are terrible at their "jobs". I'd love to see Epstein trade his GM skills for an ownership share. Preferably in Philadelphia.

I would love to see Epstein return to Boston, put together a group and buy the Sox from John Henry. His investment company hasn’t done well in the past few years. His personal wealth is less than half what it used to be.

Henry has to be one of the least liked winners by his own fans. It’s hard to trust a guy who either doesn’t speak or talks out of both sides of his mouth.

I think theo would only do it if the owners grant him a certain amount of freedom. Obviously the commissioner always works for the owners but I think manfred is a total puppet of the owners and epstein wouldn't be interested in doing that.

The last time baseball had a commissioner who acted on behalf of the game rather than the owners was Ueberroth . The owners made sure that never happened again.

Welp, maybe Theo is going to help save the MLB.

Why?  He didn't really like working for 1 owner.   He certainly isn't going to like working for 30 with different business agendas and personnel issues.

He would make a great commissioner if given a chance.   But I don't see owners agreeing on giving him that chance.   He's too much about the game and not enough about making the owners richer.

I think the advantage epstein has over manfred is that he is a pretty big name and could get more freedom. I think manfred really just does what the owners want and of course epstein would also represent the owners but he might have the charisma and standing to convince the owners of some of his own ideas
