Can someone please tell me where it says, In any rule book, that whoever picks up the game ball off the mound while going out for defense must be the pitcher? We had a kid in a 16u tournament walk out on defense, pick the ball up off the dirt of the mound and then put it back down. He never warmed up or stepped on the rubber. The umpire said he must be the pitcher now because he picked up the ball off the dirt of the mound. I looked in the MLB rule book under Pitchers and substitutions and could not find that rule. the tournament director told me they play by MLB rules for the exception of the courtesy runner for the pitcher or catcher.

CatchersDad,

Side Note....That exact situation happened to my team at AAU 11U Nationals several years ago at Disney World. The kid who picked up the ball on the mound was forced to pitch. He was our 2nd baseman. He retired the side with no hits, no runs and no errors! We kept him in there for the whole inning after he struck out the first hitter on 3 pitches.

I assure you it was not funny at the time, but it is one of more memorable experiences that we still talk about today with his parents. Wink

Coach May,
I wasn't trying to discount what the people in the Umpire Forum had to say. I was really pleased with their responses. I just thought I would throw it out in the general forum to get more or different feedback. Thanks.

I'm curious. Once the correct response is provided, complete with rule reference, why would one "throw it out" to get different feedback?

I haven't read your duplicate post in the Umpire's forum but wouldn't this avoid a coach replacing his pitcher, then changing his mind after a warm up toss or two?

I can't see them "forcing" that kid to pitch, but they might force a pitching change.

Biggerpapi,

In our case the (new) pitcher had to pitch to the hitter....not one pitch but througout the first hitters whole at bat. That is the part I did not understand, and still don't. I was going to have him throw one pitch and then bring in another pitcher. The umpire would not allow it.

I totally understand that my 2nd basemen should not have picked up the game ball, touched the rubber and pretended to throw home.

The rule applied is why....read 3.05 b...the substitiute ptcher shall pitch to the batter then at bat or any substitiute batter until such batter is put out or reaches first base....

so one pitch does not qualify...
