Here's a PDF spreadsheet with results of two showcases put on last fall by the Missouri HS Baseball Coaches Assn. This is a fine bunch of players. Many will go D-2/D-3/JUCO, but definitely a notch, probably two, below PG kids.

Events were held in Fulton and Warrensburg. Hence, the small town slant. Any HS kid could participate.

How fast must I throw? How fast should I run?
This will give the average kid a pretty good idea:

Surprising to compare pitching speed (from a mound with best of several tries) with the outfield crow hop throwing speed. Mound was much faster in some cases. A Stalker gun was used.

I'm guessing the pitchers had a long time to warm up while the fielders were just handed the ball and told to heave it.

Running speed is interesting too. Not every little skinny kid is fast. One 5'10" 160 pounder did a sloth-like 8.53 secs. In fact, kids weighing less than about 150, were generally slow. The fastest runners clustered around 170 pounds.

I'm told the kids ran in pairs on a flat stretch of outfield...less than ideal.
gimages,

Not a dumb question - if you haven't had the chance to look at showcase or scouting stats before, you probably wouldn't know what these mean.

Arm - this is the only term that I don't often see listed, but in this context I would guess it is the player's throwing velocity (infield or outfield throws, not mound pitches).

Pop - the time in seconds that it takes the catcher to throw down to 2nd base. I think it is timed from "pop" of the pitch in the catcher's glove, to "pop" of the ball in the 2B's glove, hence "pop time".

fb - the pitcher's fastball velocity

bb - the pitcher's breaking ball velocity - curve or whatever they throw

ch - velocity of the pitcher's changeup

Other members might want to chime in and tell a little more about what is considered a good pop time, what velocity differential between fastball velocity and changeup is looked for, etc.

What's surprising is that there's not a whole lot of difference between the fb velocity of the '06s and the '08s. Interesting.

Here's why: Younger kids were also trying out for about 20 slots on Missouri's Junior Sunbelt Games team that would enter a prestigious tourney against similar teams from about 8 states including Texas and California. Therefore the showcase was especially attractive for sophs and juniors.

While the stats weren't impressive by PG standards, I'm sure the 07s and 08s there were generally above average by Missouri standards. On the other hand, the names don't include Missouri's most elite kids. 90 mph pitchers, especially those from St.Louis and Kansas City, don't have as much to gain from Sun Belt Games exposure.

So who did the coaches pick?
