Josh Carter has 5 HRs now ... and he is trying to get in at VMI... he visited in the fall.

He is one who is getting better and better... he's become legitimately one of the best hitters in the region IMO.

Also... Stokes threw against us last week... clearly something off there... he threw to 2 batters and did not throw in the manner he is capable of... there is something up there.
Seems like a lot of pitching in a short amount of time for Ali?He pitched Friday a complete game at Harbor Park and then pitched a whole game last night(innings).Hydra you might be a little strong on your approach, south eastern coaches don't seem to cherish the welfare of kids arms either! The coach can only do so much to promote the bonding of the kids, parents have to equally help the cause instead of just promoting thier own child.Regardless of district.

a little uncalled for.... i dont know Ali's routine but im pretty sure 120 pitches after a FULL WEEK( the harbor park game was thursday) rest isnt going to damage the "welfare" of his arm.

Every coach in the SE district knows what they are doing. They know how to manage arms. Lee, West, Todd etc etc etc

The personal shots on this site have to go.
Did not know that pitching on Thursday and pitching the following Wednesday constitutes a FULL WEEK of rest.

Don't agree that every coach in the SED knows how to manage arms. How can you explain a SED pitcher signing with a major league team and then being told after his MRI by that team that he won't be able to pitch for some time, if ever, because of the overuse of his arm and may have to be a position player?

It is very interesting to watch Great Bridge’s approach to pitching. Granted I have seen only four of Great Bridge’s games and maybe there really isn’t a pattern, but Coach Lee does not seem to rely upon one pitcher, expecting him to pitch an entire game. Whether that is the game plan from the start or whether that is how it turns out, only he and his staff know. First game I watched was Indian River v Great Bridge, round 1. GB led the entire game. Stokes pitched 3 innings, was removed from the mound with a 3-0 lead, Flaherty pitched innings 4-6, Vanassche faced 2 batters in the 7th and then Gumpert pitched. It did get a little dicey as IR had the winning run at the plate with bases loaded (through hit batters, walks and errors) but GB prevailed. Next game I watched was GB v Nova HS. Stokes pitched 2 innings, #32 pitched an inning, Frye pitched an inning, and then Suttmiller, who took the mound with a lead, pitched 2 long innings. In that game Suttmiller walked 6 and gave up a few hits. GB suffered the loss. Next GB game I saw was WB at GB. Vanassche relieved Flaherty after 4 innings, with WB in the lead. Vanassche held WB to no runs, while the WB pitcher was asked to pitch the complete game. It was in the bottom of the 6th, when GB batters were facing the starting pitcher for the third time, that GB strung hits together and won the game. Now to the IR / GB game last night. Flaherty pitches 5 complete innings and leaves the mound with the score IR 6, GB 2. Suttmiller faces 8 batters in the 6th and 7th, looking much better than against Nova, his curve ball is nasty and he allows no runs. Vanassche pitches the 8th and 9th for the win. IR, on the other hand, asks its workhorse, Ali, to pitch 7 complete innings, with the pitch count being near the century mark at the end of 6 innings. The damage of 3 runs to tie the game happened in the bottom of the 7th inning when the GB batters were facing him for the FOURTH time in the game. Those runs were scored by the top three of GB’s batting order. Yet, when Dickason faces those same 3 batters in the bottom of the 8th (having already struck out the 9th batter in the batting order), he strikes out the first and third batters, allowing only the second batter (in the batting order) to reach base. One wonders if Dickason had pitched the 7th whether the outcome might have been different in last night’s game.

All this seems to suggest to me that Coach Lee is not afraid to use multiple pitchers in a game, whether his team is leading or behind. Perhaps he has a luxury many teams don’t – multiple pitchers. But maybe other teams have multiple pitchers but are afraid to make the switch.

First I want to make clear I don't think Dean is in this category AT ALL. But a story to share about pitcher over use. In Arizona last year there was a case of a pitcher being over used, in their playoff format it is double elimination to get to the title game. Meaning that the losers bracket team has to win twice over the winner of the winners bracket. A pitcher last year threw 171 pitches in a double header to get his team into the championship. Everyone was in a rage over it, considering the kid had just signed with the University of Arizona. The coach, parents and player insisted he was fine after. In his freshman year at the UofA he was about to crack the rotation, while warming up his elbow blew out. While this was months after the 171 pitch effort, you can never tell when the damage will come out. Coaches want to win and so do players and parents, a GOOD coach will put health in the future before a Win today.

You are correct Reporter,or should I say I'm wrong?Per your post, only Indian River and Granby seem to have a problem with pitching rotations.Sorry! You are also respectfully informed!I also believe Ali was prepared(not prepared)being asked to pitch on Tuesday evening only being stopped by the rain.bball not trying to personally attack somebody, only the decision that is being made as it concerns our high school kids.(kids being the strong word here)
Let's not forget that while Coach Lee is changing his pitchers around he's also getting a lot of young arms into big games even if it's only for a batter or two or an inning or two. That experience pays off down the road. Look at this year, very few if any GB players would be considered the "best" at their spot, but together they win games because they've been there and done that.
On top of all that, the names WB Reporter mentioned, save Stokes, have pitched in big games their entire baseball career with top AAU teams. Every one of them has thrown against a top National caliber AAU team in a meaningful game. They are used to having to execute. The same cannot be said or any other staff that is 5+ deep.

Kudos to Coach Lee for trusting his kids and managing them well.

Hickory 10 - Oscar Smith 1

My apologies for being remiss but I will add to what has already been discussed... this is not the same Oscar Smith team that Hickory played in the first part of the season. Even though the score would say otherwise, this team is very much improved and I was very impressed with how they picked each other up even in the late innings. They were all off the bench and in the game. The new coach has done a great job.
----------1--2--3--4--5--6--7---R--H--E
Hickory---2--0--0--6--2--0--0---10--9--1
O. Smith--0--0--1--0--0--0--0---1--5--3

For H: Brock Jaeger, Todd Freeman, and Bobby Chandler (not sure on their grad years, but I liked the way Jaeger threw the ball) all threw well for Hickory, finishing with 8 Ks combined. Will Flora ('10), who is IMO one of the top hitters in the area (and isn't committed - which is hard to believe), went 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, 3 runs, and 3 RBI. Danny Grauer ('10) was 1-for-1 with a 2B and 2 RBI. Cullen Boykin & Todd Freeman each had 2 hits as well. The Hawks played good defense as the lone error came on a smoked shot at the 3B in the 7th. Matt Campbell ('12) is as solid as it gets at SS... vey impressive.

For Smith: Again, kept it close for a while, but that big inning again cost the Tigers. A misplayed bunt & misplayed fly ball started the 4th inning opened the door for Hickory to take advantage and control the game. A dropped flyball in the 1st got the Hawks going as well.
Stephen Lorkiewicz ('10) drove in the only run, while Troy Applin ('11) & Antonio Bland ('11) combined for 6 Ks in just 1.2 IP of relief (Applin had 4 Ks in the 7th).

As of now, Flora is going to James Madison but not for baseball. He might try and walk on. He can definitely swing the stick and with some pop.

Grauer will be making his college commitment soon. He is a player behind the dish. The best catcher in SED from what I have seen.

Hickory and Indian River - big game today. Let's see what players and team rises to the occasion.
Western Branch 10 Deep Creek 1

WB scored in every inning, beginning with 4 runs in the first inning. CJ McAndrews (WB) hit his first homerun of the year. Garrett Brooks (2S), Shane Johnsonbaugh (S, 2B), Bobby Barefoot (S, 2B), Kenny Cassidy (2S), Alex Hunt (2B, 3B) and CJ McAndrews (S, HR) each had two hits for WB. Mike Cole scored DC's lone run in the top of the fourth on a long single by DC's #17 who had two hits on the day. Nick Thompson picked up his 7th win. Tommy Bradshaw (struck out 4 in 2 innings) and Ryan Bennett pitched in relief for WB.

I assume Cox went for GF. Was it a complete game shutout?

Looks like Hickory is now out of it. It is really a shame because they are surely one of the top 8 teams in the Southside but here season will end a week or two earlier than it should.

GB better watch themselves Tuesday because Hickory could claim some measure of satisfaction by hurting the neighborhood rival.
----------1--2--3--4--5--6--7---R--H--E
O. Smith--1--0--0--0--0--2--0---3--5--7
N. River---1--1--2--4--0--2--X--10--7--3

For NR - Kyle Moore ('12) was on fire at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a HR and 6 RBI (All 4 ABs were in 2-out situations as well). Zach Vann was 2-for-3 as well for NR.

For OS - Allowed 2 ER out of 10. Dropped fly balls, kicked ground balls with 2 outs and runners on were killer. Brandon Davis ('10) was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Stephen Lorkiewicz ('12) had another RBI single tonight, while Troy Applin ('11) had a double and a walk, but took the tough loss (3.1 IP, 0 ER) on the mound.

About the IR/Hickory game....
Hickory started off the scoring in the top of the 1st when Will Flora singled in Matt Campbell from second. IR answered when Ali hit a fly ball that had the RF spinning and bounced off his glove. IR continued to capitalize on Hickory mistakes. Heath stole home but from my angle he clearly looked out but I was down the RF line.
The umpire really hurt both pitchers especially Hickory's with his tiny zone.
Heath pitched really well. Getting ahead of just about every batter.

The next game for Hickory after the Great Bridge game is Grassfield at home on Saturday. That would be another game where Hickory could get a "measure of satisfaction."

WB wonder who would get the most satisfaction from those 2 games Hickory or Western Branch?
