Best game of the first week looks like Great Bridge vs Hickory. Hickory gets a chance to make an early statement in year 2 of the new regime while GB having lost Walker and Balser will have to shuffle it's lineup. They will be weaker offensively and defensively than they would have been.

Oscar Smith also gets a chance to show if they are ready to move toward the top with the opener against Hickory and the preseason favorite Nansmond River takes on Grassfield in what should be pretty intereting match ups.

Agreed, with all but one. KF will take down Grassfield....and depending on who Hickory starts pitching, OS may take down Hickory. Blake may be saved for the Friday game vs GB.

Looking ahead could prove to be dangerous. Got to win the one you in first...don't you?

100% agreed. We'll see what they do. They've got NR on the following Tuesday so they'd be smart to start Blake for the first game.
Oscar Smith Scorekeeper Comments (via ofs10):

Hickory - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 0 // 6 - 6 - 1
Smith . - 0 - 0 - 1 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 1 // 2 - 5 - 4
------------------
WP: Blake LP: Loudon
HR: Carter, Neice

For those who did not see the game in person, Hickory didn't necessarily "handle OS easily" (as was posted earlier)... the game could have been much tighter... which is a good sign for a young Smith team (1 senior).

3 freshmen & 2 sophomores in the starting lineup for Smith got over some 1st varsity game jitters today, but in the process, 2 base-running mistakes that were absolutely huge and all 4 errors directly leading to runs scored for Hickory made all of the difference.

David Loudon pitched very well for Smith early (6IP, 7H, 3 ER, 3K), surrendering only a misplayed fly-ball double through 4 innings.

The game essentially came down to 2 innings.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Smith began the inning with 2 hits; then, a base-running gaffe by one of the Smith freshmen got him caught too far from second base for out #1. Following a 3rd hit, another misread … a late read on a blocked ball, got a runner thrown out at third for out #2. The next batter strokes a base-hit & although the inning starts with 4 straight hits, there are 2 outs and only one run on the board. After a walk, the next batter grounds into a force to end the inning.

Then, with the game tied 1-1 in the top of 5th, Loudon gets the 1st batter out before an error by the SS (freshman) puts a runner on. On the very next pitch, Loudon gives up the 2-run HR to Carter. The next batter reached on an error (bobble by 1B would have been out #3); then, went to second on an errant pickoff attempt. Then, scored on triple by Tandy, making it 4-1, which was all Hickory needed.

A HR by Neice and another unearned run made it 6-1 after 6. Smith scored 1 in the bottom of the 7th to make it a 6-2 final.

Hickory:
Tandy: 1-3, 3B, RBI
Best: 2-4, 2B, R
Campbell: 0-2, BB
Blake: 0-3, RBI
Neice: 1-3, HR, RBI
Carter: 2-3, 2B, HR, R, 3 RBI
Herbst: 0-3, R
Blake: 5.1IP, 5H, 1 ER, BB, 5K

Smith:
Barnett ('15): 1-3, R
McNeil ('12): 1-3, RBI
Johnston ('13): 1-2, 2B, BB
Packert ('15): 1-3, RBI
Ennis ('14): 1-3

PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS:
* Matt Campbell made all 3 outs in the 5th... 2 of which showed why he'll be playing at UNC this fall ... they were next-level range plays.
* The fly ball hit by Campbell in the 5th WAS a ‘bomb’ (as posted earlier), but the Smith CF (freshman Daniel Barnett), who did a great job of running down fly balls today, caught that one at the fence in center (probably went 70-80 feet to grab it on the run). Just acknowledging his fielding as he collected 6 nice putouts, covering a lot of ground with no errors out there, in his first varsity action.
* Good News for Smith: 2010 2nd Team All-District 2B Stephen Lorkiewicz may return next week. He missed last 16 games of 2011 due to season-ending shoulder injury.

I'm sure there is Gato. But they have a deep center field, and if you would have seen it you'd agree that there's no other word that would do it justice. Smile

He hit another nice drive earlier that went to right field. That one was just a long out.
Nansemond River 6R 9H 2E 8LOB
Grassfield 1R 4H 0E 3LOB

TY Brown had a 1 hitter through 5 innings in route to a complete game. NR scored 3 runs on 5 hits in the first 2 innings and tacked on 3 more runs in the 5th and 6th innings. NR was in control throughout with Brown on the mound.

Standouts for NR:
Tyler Brown 7IP 4H 1BB 1R (0 ER) 9K; 2-3 with run scored
Brandon Lowe 3-3, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored
Zach Vann 2-3, 2B, 4 RBI

Grassfield (No names):
#15 1-3, 2B and run scored

The OSHS field measurements are 325' down the lines, 350' to the power alleys and 375' to straight-away center. In the past 2 years, only 3 have been hit over the centerfield fence; in 2010, by Grassfield's Jason Ingraham and 2 last summer (2011) by Tyler Pitt on the perennial Lynnhaven Palomino World Series team & Thomas Dushatinski on Chesapeake Post 280 Greenbrier American Legion state championship team ... truly a rare feat indeed!

I had wondered what the measurements were. The outfielders on both teams had their work cut out for them. They all did a good job. And with the new bats it will continue to be a run down.

No. That game was tied at 2 after 2, then IR tied it at 5 in the top of the 5th and NR scored to take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the 5th (and that was the final).

Thanks. I guess the memory was of IR competing and your description does indicate that they were competing.
Nansemond River 7R 8H 2E 3LOB
Indian River 8R 5H 3E 6LOB

Nansemond River came out strong again scoring 3 runs on 3 consecutive hits by Brandon Lowe, Tyler Brown and Zach Vann and a sac fly by Travis Johnson in the top of the 1st inning. Zach Rice was also strong on the hill striking out 5 of the first 6 batters faced. After the 1st, Indian River pitcher Roger Hall settled in and pitched a scoreless 2nd, 3rd and 4th inning.

After consecutive walks in the 3rd, Indian River was able to score 2 runs on a bunt single and a ground out to 2B.

In the 5th NR got 3 more runs after a single followed by a throwing error to 2B on a ground ball. Lowe drove in two with a triple to right center and was brought in by a sac fly by Brown. The teams traded runs in the 6th.

In the 7th with the score 7-4 Nansemond River unraveled. The reliever made an error, hit a batter and walked the third batter faced. After throwing a wild pitch to the 4th batter, plating a runner, he was relieved by the 2nd reliever of the inning. The catcher #7 Milvo? promptly drove the 1st pitch to the right centerfield fence scoring 2 and tying the game. The next batter was intentionally walked. Then #5 came to the plate and hit a line drive single to right, but the throw from Trevor Riggs in rightfield cutdown Milvo at the plate trying to score from 2B. With guys on 2nd and 3rd, the next batter was intentionally walked loading the bases with 1 out. On a 3-2 count, #22 was walked scoring the winning run.

Pitching:
NR
Zach Rice 5.2IP 3H 3ER 4BB 6K

IR
Roger Hall 6IP 7H 4ER 2BB 5K

Hitting:
NR
Brandon Lowe 2-3, 3B, 2RBI
Zach Vann 2-3, RBI

IR
Milvo 1-4, 2B, 3RBI

Absolutely. They fought to the end in all 3 games played last year and could have won any one of them.
