Guess it is a judgment call. Most of the "old-timers" I spoke with agreed with my call of a hit.

Any truth to the rumor that the Pilot was present? Given the scant coverage, I presume not. Does this qualify as a big upset or just a bump in the road?

1) If they were present, they still weren't present. Coverage around here is anemic at best.

2) This is a HUGE upset, even though I think your question was rhetorical.

Two observations

1) 3 guys Brandon Lowe, Zach Vann, and Tyler Brown are a combined 12 for 18 with 10 RBI. The rest of the team is 5 for 36 with 2 RBI.

2) Tyler Brown and Zach Rice have thrown 12-2/3 of 13-1/3 innings giving up 4 of 9 runs while both threw 90+ pitches.

While its still early others will need to pick it up or it may be a disappointing year.
The Deep Creek player hit a hard grounder just inside the bag down the third base line. The third basemen laid out for it and was able to stop the ball with his body. Looked more like a hit and good defensive play than an error to me. But I guess a plausible argument can be made both ways. Just for the record, I am a casual fan and have no vested interest one way or the other.

Thanks. I got my information from highschoolsports.net where the SED athletic directors post the schedule and changes. If it is at 5:30, I hope the AD corrects his misposting since the schools encourage parents of athletes to check there for the latest. Smile

Hickory games can always be verified on their website, which is usually updated often.

OSCAR SMITH SCOREKEEPER COMMENTS

Smith . . - 3 - 0 - 0 - 3 - 0 - 0 - 3 // 9 - 9 - 3
Lakeland - 2 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 0 - 2 - 1 // 6 - 7 - 3
WP: McNeil (1-0) LP: Fitzwater SV: Packert

Smith came out strong in the top of the 1st with 4 hits and a walk to score 3 runs. But Lakeland answered with 2 in the bottom half, with one being aided by a catcher's interference call on what would have been a flyout.

Jarrett McNeil & Robert Fitzwater settled down after that, with no more earned runs scoring until the 6th. In the top of the 4th, Smith scored 3 unearned runs on 1 hit, 1 walk, and 3 Lakeland errors to make it 6-2.

Lakeland scored 3 in the the bottom of the 6th on 2 hits (RBI double by McCaw & RBI single by Bass), with the last run coming across on a 2-strike, 2-out wild pitch to make the game 6-5.

Smith answered in the top of the 7th with a single by Conner Smith, an RBI double by McNeil, a pinch-hit infield single by Stephen Lorkiewicz (in his first AB of 2012), and an RBI single by Thomas Packert to make it a 9-5 game.

Lakeland started the bottom of the 7th with a hit-by-pitch (first pitch of the inning), a balk to move the runner to second base, a flyout, and a walk by reliever Logan Lex before Packert came in to close it out. The first batter Packert faced lifted a routine fly to right-center in which the two Smith outfielders looked at each other as the ball fell between them, scoring the 6th Lakeland run. A groundout and strikeout ended the game.

Smith:
D. Barnett ('15): 1-3, 2 R, BB, SB
C. Smith ('13): 2-4, 2 R
J. McNeil ('12): 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 K ; RBI-Double
S. Lorkiewicz ('12): 1-1, R
D. Loudon ('13): 1-3, 2 RBI, BB
T. Packert ('15): 2-3, R, 2 RBI, BB ; .2 IP, K, Save
T. Ennis ('14): 1-3, R, BB

Lakeland:
D. Fenton ('12): 1-4
B. Harris ('15): 1-3, 2 R
S. McCaw ('14): 3-4, 2 2B, R, 3 RBI
J. Bass ('13): 2-3, 2B, RBI
R. Fitzwater ('15): 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 10 K

PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS:
* Robert Fitzwater looked pretty good for a freshman on the mound for Lakeland... striking out 10 in 5.2 IP.
* Stephen Lorkiewicz returned for Smith as a pinch-hitter & may be back full-time next week.
* Freshmen & Sophomores contributed heavily for both sides.

My concern with NR is the arms after Brown and Rice. I heard Kyle Moore has had some good bullpens in the fall. Who is after those guys?

I agree. They'll put up big numbers regularly but can be hittable.

Brown and Rice gave up 7 hits in almost 13 innings. I think that combination is as good as any 1-2 combo in the District. What did them in against Indian River was their relievers inability to find the strike zone more than being hittable.
Hickory looked good with some timely hits, solid defense, good pitching and taking advantage of some Great Bridge errors.

Hickory scored 2 runs in the first inning on 2 hits, 2 errors, a walk, a balk and 4 k's. Line was something like this: k, double, k, pick-off of the runner at second getting back safely on a dropped catch (should have been the third out), double, k dropped third strike, walk, balk, k.

Hickory made it stand up with Ryan Blake keeping GB off balance all game except for Beard's 3 hits. Blake pitched 7 innings, 7 hits and 8 k's. Hickory scored again later in the game on a double, ground out, fc with the catcher dropping the throw at home which allowed the third run to score.

GB scored in the top of the seventh on three hits by Beard, Con. Jones and Newell.

Connor Jones took the loss with 4 1/3 innings, 4 hits, 7 k's, no earned runs, while Cooper Jones finished up looking good.

Nice win for Hickory.

Couple of additional comments to add to QUAD's summary. The Hickory defense played well such that Blake only had to throw approximately 80 pitches in the 7 innings he pitched while Great Bridge's defense forced Connor Jones to pitch 28 pitches in his first inning alone. Blake pitched 5 innings where he faced only 3 batters. One of those innings was the 5th inning when Christian Lowery, playing center field, laid out to make a nice diving catch for the second out of that inning.

In the inning in which Hickory scored its 3rd run, the ground out which QUAD mentions was a well executed, no outs, sac bunt down the third base side by Tyler Best, advancing Christian Lowery who had led off the inning with a double.
