Sports and Dating: The Secret to College Recruiting

It is a natural process.  Players, student-athletes, boys/girls eventually want to leave home and get away!! They venture out on a date, on a job, on a team, or go to school not to find a job for the rest of their life…. But to get away and do their thing!  Just think about it….  I cannot find one parent who at 17/18 was deciding on their money making career based on what we try to ram down their throats today.  We are forcing kids to go to school, collect a scholarship, sign professionally, make lots of money, forget friends, forget fun, forget character, forget life learning………NO WONDER players quit after constant showcase  participation, travel ball schedules, and first year fights for roster spots on a collegiate website. No wonder there is a lack of quality coaching and teaching because it is all about the money instead of the play.  I have never heard an umpire say “WORK BASEBALL”  But I have heard him say “Play BALL.”

If a parent is going out on a date with his child….oops…. a helicopter parent is flying on a suicide mission. If a parent is constantly in the child’s athletic career…oops…. another helicopter parent is going to go out in flames.  If a parent allows their child to explore, search, play, fail, and win on his own with informed encouragement….. a happy marriage will result…on and off the field.

He's a recruiting service, among other things...that is spamming this site, trying to drum up business under the guise of "offering" to educate us...

I've requested he contact the owner to PURCHASE advertising...in addition to reading the history, policies, articles, etc that hsbaseballweb.com offers for FREE to parents of potential college recruits.

Now, I'm going to be simple, plain & direct.

This person is spamming. This person has an agenda. This person is actively soliciting naive parents & players to his "global" baseball program. Read his profile.

Folks, just be aware that every now & then, some NEW poster comes hear touting "all the secrets" of recruiting, etc...This persons motive is your pocketbook.

Now, the secret is out.

I also have contacted moderators regarding the use of phone, website info as well as suggesting VMARLINS do some research on the site to understand what it is about, which is not trying to expand your customer base.

Sharing info is good, but sharing because you really care about helping others and expanding your customer base doesn't work for me as well as you, who happen not to be "gentleman".

Of course if new posters read profiles they would know who their audience is.

Hope PC is doing well, DK learning about the challenges of his new position.  So happy he is back in FL.

If you have children who are student athletes then you know this secret.  If you have children who have been drafted out of high school, or gone to college on scholarship then you also know this secret.  I have six children, four grandchildren, and yes one was drafted out of high school in 2003 as the 83rd pick of the draft.  I also have a son who went to college on scholarship through his own merits. I have another son who has disabilities and he finished college after 8 years.  I also have a Marine, a worker, and a daughter who finished two associates degrees by the age of 20 and is now finishing her BA all on her own.

So here is my hidden agenda!!!

I am a parent who has been a college coach, a scout, International Coach, a high school teacher, parent, and even worked for a Showcase service.  I know the showcase world, I know the collegiate athletic world,  I know what goes on behind the scenes in recruiting/showcasing/development, and I am now taking all my experiences to the parents, families, and players who want to know the real secrets that are going on.

I teach players, I coach players, and I network players.  I also answer questions for parents and players.  Finally, those student-athletes that are the misfits around the country, we help them too.  So if you want to see what I do that is fine, It would be an honor to talk and discuss  the process of creating good citizens through Positive athletic participation.

Just to make clear what I meant, I took the time to respond to the post. Trying to make VM understand that we understand that helicopter parents exists, but most folks here are so to try tout make sense of the process so as to guide their children, not make their decisions.

FWIW, I believe that most HS students, male and female, who want to go to college do so because they have career goals, not just to go to party.

The best part of being involved in sports in college is because if you don't get it done in the classroom, you won't play.    I think that folks here have a clear understanding that college is very expensive, therefore they really need to help their player as much as they can and help them to find the best fit.

Your "hidden agenda" is that you get paid for your services.

We already have people on this site that have been and ARE college coaches, scouts, International Coaches, high school teachers, parents and currently work for Showcase services....NONE OF THEM CHARGE A DIME FOR THEIR TIME ON THIS SITE!

As the parent of a 9th grader I say share what you have to say and stop looking to drum up business.

Coach,

You wont make many friends here calling players misfits.

We help everyone here, and we have some awesome success stories without charging a penny. Plus we have some great professionals here to help as well.

FYI, I am a parent of a player that attended top 25 ACC championship program who worked under IMO the top college baseball coach in the country now,  drafted 71st by a championship team, played professional ball for 9 years, went back to finish at that top 25 program, won another ACC championship as student assistant coach, pc for a college summer program who won their league championship and now the pc and head recruiter for a D2 in FL.

What do you think that I dont know that I cant share?

Wow, I am proud of you, you are beginning to sound like me!!!!

I know VMARLINS and his brother who coaches at Averrett university in Danville VA. I can tell you from my personal experience with VM he's not a bad guy or trying to spam anyone.  Some members of his family have or are serving our country.   His program does have good things to offer.  Although my son did not participate but only because of logistics not because of anything else. He's a good guy.  Just maybe the approach isn't the best.

Very good answer to the post I placed.  No question about the talented smart athletes and their families.  However there are so so many that do not have a clue.  And I have watch briefly some of the comments made by parents looking for answers.  Yes, I am very passionate about what I do and how I say it.  Because after all the work that parents do to help their children go to college I end up getting many of them at 18,19,20,21 all broken because they went to a college team with a roster of 75 baseball players and had no chance to show their ability, or they end up spending 5-6 years in education because of transferring from one school to another. The best ones are the kids that are led to believe they are pro prospects or college D1 prospects and then never get the call.  They stop playing and many go into negative worlds of activity.

This is the best one on your site this past weekend.  Parents are asking about early commits at the age of 13/14! does it exist, is this real? What do we have to do to be in this category?  COME ON!! 13/14!!  I have them also and have had them.  Put the wrong emphasis on this process and you destroy a family. Provide appropriate answers and we all have a great story for the future.  I leave you all with this:

I had a 16 year old athlete from the Czech Republic here this summer training with our program. We took an 18 second video and sent it to a friend in the administrative end of professional baseball. An 18 second video from an IPhone.  The next week he and a D1 Recruiting Co-ordinator flew a long way to see him in person.  Many deals were discussed to find a way to keep him here in the USA!!! The mother and father in Czech refused to considered and expressed that he was too young.  Naturally, I was bent out of shape  until I stepped back to let nature unfold.  The parents were right.  Let their son grow up and be a young man with a heart and soul and love for the game he plays.

We do what we do and we love it.

The amount of money spent on the recruiting process and college is significant. It makes it a business decision. Most teenagers are not capable of making business decisions that involve the level of money associated with the process. A parent has to be careful not to drive their kid crazy over playing college baseball. But once the kid decides he wants it the parent should be heavily involved. But the parent has to understand going in the end result may not be D1 baseball. The process should be about achieving a quality education and quality college baseball experience regardless of the level played.

The "they don't work baseball" is a bad cliche. Save it for the younger kids. Once a kid decides he wants to play college baseball he's getting involved in a business. I doubt my son ever saw weight lifting and sprinting with a parachute attached to him as play. It was hard work. He made it fun. But he wouldn't have done it if not for baseball.

I agree. With what I can dig up on the www, Frank has an extensive background in baseball and football. Also, one article I read was about a female baseball player.

While I have a great deal of respect for our oldtimers and what they offer here they can come down very quickly like a ton of bricks on folks and I agree in this case it's been a little too much and too soon.  Maybe Frank does have a viewpoint that would be helpful to some folks. Though also maybe he should have done some reading to get a feel for the room before jumping in.

That is wonderful about your son. We did it all as well. Running 6.5, throwing 97, benching 400, and so on. we have put more work into this game than most and have developed more players, out worked many more, and now just tryin to share a process that works. If you do not love playing and competing then it does become work.

Thats what was suggested and if he really did look around he would see we got the 13/14 thing covered.

Needs to work on his approach, follow the others who come hete ro help, have businesses but dont shove it in our faces.

They dont tell us to contact them i we have questions, they answer here. Or they pay advertising fee, this is not a free site looking to help grow your business, I dont care how passionate that makes you.

There is nothing wrong ith anyone protecting the integrity of this site and its purpose.

There was a poster on this site who charges $1.000 per client to aid in the college recruiting process. His claim to fame is one kid was a first round pick. The other went to the ACC. He ultimately had a third son play D1. My son played with him in a scout league. This consultant is a good guy. I liked him as a person. But ...

i told a friend (son was high school teammate and best friend  of my son and played travel for me through 16u) not to pay for recruiting services. I would help free of charge. This was a kid I considered an adopted son. I had mentored him in baseball since LL.

Without the consultant ever seeing the kid play he was told to make a list of colleges where he would like to play and use the form letter to contact them. After all, the kid was all conference. The kid had Stanford and Vanderbilt on his list. Both this kid and my son were top students. I asked the mother why my son didn't have these two schools on his list.

The mother wasn't happy when I explained her son was a D3 prospect. I added while my son was capable of playing D1, not at Stanford or Vanderbilt. I helped the kid make a reasonable list.

Even though the mother paid $1,000 the "consultant" often didn't return phone calls for three days. He had a real job and several hundred baseball clients.  By the time the process was over this mother and two other of his clients were calling me to get timely answers.

They asked how I knew what the consultant knew. I explained I had already been through this with my daughter and softball. Any baseball adjustments I learned from hsbaseballweb. I advised them if they wanted more and possibly better advice than I could give join the site. The only advantage I had was I knew the kids playing ability and potential.

Amen to that, Brother JCG!

Doing research on Coach Fulton turned up some surprising stuff. I think the main problem, Coach, is that this board is much more sophisticated and knowledgeable than the average client you are attempting to target. Therefore, your posts not only appear to be trying to drum up business, but come off as condescending to a group for which the basic info you use as "bait" is simple HSWBB 101 stuff and pretty much everyone here passed that course long ago. Posters like TPM and justbaseball, in fact, have finished their phd's.

The whole "Call me, I'd love to chat" really sounds bad.  The "chat" needs to occur on the web site, openly, and not try to pry them away from the web site with the telephone number and the promise to unlock the "secrets".  If he would drop those two comments from his posts, he would stand a much better chance of not getting pushed out.  I'm with TPM in protecting the site when necessary.  VMARLINS can either come around and offer up advice openly - and let several folks digest the advice and discuss further - or he should pack up.  I don't think that is asking too much even given his heightened passion.

Gotcha.  I will try to do a better job.  I just need to know how to express what I have seen over the past 38 years without it being considered drumming up business.  When I give advice and council and coach and teach maybe it is best to keep it to myself and only share with those that find me. Your thoughts and suggestions would be most appreciated.

Don't get used to it, though. Just a momentary lapse. :-)

Basically, VMarlin, what you have to do here is be much more specific and give the same advise and info here you would give to someone who did take you up on your offer to call. It's obvious that you have obtained years of relevant knowledge and experience. This is the place to share it - not market it. That's all you need to do.

If you are interested, visit the boards everyday and watch for new posters. They usually are looking for answers in help in beginning the process.

Leave your biz info in your profile. As suggested dont ask anyone to contact you or tell us about what you can do. Anyone interested will do research and make their own decisions.
