Ok so we get to Roger Dean an hour early as we loved to go watch bp but that was over and done with already and the field being prepared while teh players got to eat in the locker room. A fridge magnet giveaway with dates for the Marlins/Cards season (they share the facility). A booklet with both teams players pictured, mine was not in it Frown, in fact some players pictured were in AA or low A, which means they didn't know who was going where up until the last minute. I hope that they make a new one. Got something to eat and sat down just as players were coming from the dugout. Didn't see son, said hello to son's former teammate's folks who was drafted sandwich round in HS in 2005 and turned pro. He is going into his 4th year in High A (2 years in rookie and one in low class A). He was the starter tonight.

Sat down in front of dugout and I see a familiar head pop out and former #47 Tiger is now #47 PB Cardinal. Big Grin He looked good in his uni. Playing the Marlins, people begin to trickle in, lots of Marlins fans as Jeremy Hermida was doing rehab at bats. Used to seeing thousands, now maybe 3-400 in a huge stadium.

Cardinals came from behind and won. I think both teams played well for a first season game, though both teams have been facing each other for weeks.

Couple of things.

I noticed during the game the manager and pitching coach stood in a corner watching carefully, they were not coaching the game, everything seemed to run by itself. The defense looked good. It's a pitchers park in a pitchers league.

People in gift shop (yes we had to visit the gift shop) told us that on the weekends it's pretty packed, but not much in attendance during week games, the FL State league is not a well attended league, however this year due to top prospects playing against each other, attendance is expected to rise. The girls in the shop were pretty happy though, because it was a busy spring training.

DK takes the mound in Vero on saturday quite a drive for us, we have decided to head to Miami to go watch the Tigers play instead. I also think he wants to get into a groove before we watch him next week. So if he starts on saturday he relieves 4 days later (8 starting pitcher piggyback system) but enters in a new inning. Few reasons, one to limit pitch counts per game while building up arm strength, chance to win in relief, and for the coaches to define roles of 8 starting pitchers. It should change by mid season and then go into a 5 man rotation. Interesting.

Since it wasn't the first to see him in a Cardinal uniform, I wasn't teary eyed like I was the first time I saw him in purple and orange. Smile
I think I just found a sleeper who to try to snag the HSBBW Fantasy League:

Here are five other guys you need to watch early in the minor league season.

2. Nick Adenhart, Angels: Adenhart threw 153 innings at Double-A in '07, putting him about a year ahead of Kershaw in terms of development, and Adenhart was no less impressive during spring training. With John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar out, the 21-year-old Adenhart made a good case for the Angels' fifth starter, but in the end the team decided to give guys like Joe Saunders and Dustin Moseley a chance. If and when they or Ervin Santana underperforms, Adenhart will probably make his big league debut. He's not the fireballer Kershaw is, but he's got three pitches and polish.

My Nick Adenhart story
(I know I have probably posted this before - but what the heck - LOL)

Several years ago - at PG Jupiter - eldest gets up against Nick.
My friend Tom - who lives right near the Stadium - comes by to watch the games with me.

Nick on the mound - he throws the first pitch to my son - and my friend says - "Who the hell is that - I thought this was supposed to be a high school level tournament"? - I turned around and said - Tom - it is! - LOL

Then next pitch - Nick saws the bat in half with an inside fastball.

After the game - my son comes up to me - they lost 2-1.
I tell him the usual - Good game, close one, etc.... And I mention Nick and his exceptional pitching.

Not one much for excess words - D says:

Dad - that guy is ******* good. - LOL
