ZacksDad,
I haven't been on this site for long but,in that short period of time, I have learned a lot more than I ever thought I would and learned that I didn't know as much as I thought I did.
Many old time members and newer ones helped my son and I make a tough decision to redshirt my son for his freshman year in college after knee surgery even after the doctor released him. HSBBW members showed us this was the right decision.
Something for you to ponder. You said your son's coach yelled at Zack for something he did but never said anything to the CF after many mistakes. My son's HS coach for all three years he played Varsity, directed his rants at my son and another player. At my son's awards dinner his senior year, his coach only said two short statements about my son. "In three years catcher's place was the only position I didn't have to think about for every game." and than held up his right hand and said "that's how many stolen bases off of him all year"
After the dinner, the coach came up to my wife and I and thanked us. He said when he needed to yell at the team he directed to our son and the CF because he knew they could handle it and the team would listen. Some of the other players would shut down when they got talked to.
Enjoy the site, you'll learn that you have a lot to learn. I did. Thanks everyone!
Julie,
That was an awesome post, thanks for saying such nice things about our kids!
One thing though, you made an "error", DK only pltched once against the big boys.
Sometimes I have to go back to read pervious posts to try to get an understanding of exactly what's going on when posts seem bizarre and I must admit this one seemed that way, but I didn't have a chance to go back until a while ago.
Zacksdad,
I may be wrong, but I think a lot of your anxiety exists because of the age of your son. Possibly because he is older than other freshman, you might feel he should be playing with others where he may physically fit in.
Please do not take this the wrong way, but just some food for thought. I think you have used your son's disability to create a sterling outfielder. You have limited him to one position, and just may be possible the coach wants him to learn other positions, which would only be to his benefit. I think that is why you are caught up on him not making errors.
If this is true, you have done, IMO, a great disservice to your son, limiting his ability to play only one position when young. FWIW, unless the player is a pitcher only, very few position players actually end up playing their first position in college and sometimes even in pro ball.
I don't mean to get on ya, but after reading some of your previous posts, I see you even dissed Pujols in one to them. BTW, he made an error last night.
All kidding aside, I do hope that you do take some of the advice given, reach down deep inside and let go, let your son be who he is, let him learn the game from others, and enjoy this time in HS, because you never know when it will end, for him as well as for you.

Julie,
That was a wonderful post but you forgot one person, yourself. That post was a perfect example of how you set a great tone for this website. No wonder why it is so successful.

Zacks last game of the spring was last night. He went out on a good note-2 for 2. Single, double, sac fly and 4 rbi's. He finished the season 18 for 40. 1 assist

quote:It is probably but it is quite normal for a freshman to play on the frosh team and a sophmore to play JV.
That's the norm for most high school programs that are big enough to field frosh, jv and v teams.
Of course that can vary if schools who play a lot of upperclassmen graduate a whole starting team of them and there aren't many upcoming juniors and there's more sophs and frosh that can compete for varsity spots the following season. HS baseball rosters turnover so much every year and a lot of it is timing. Sometimes, if a player was a year older or younger, the journey would probably be very different but you can't do anything about that stuff.
Baseball is a character building sport, not just for the players but for the parents also.
Zach's dad, just make sure that you're not rubbing any of your negativity toward the other players off on your son, it could greatly affect his play in many ways.
