DFW people - I think you guys will hear a lot more about Klein Collins and Katy. To give you an idea of Klein Collins' pitching depth, their #4 got a scholarship to Blinn. That team is unbelievable...

Very impressive, I think we'll concede that the Houston area has done a mighty fine job of garnering the preseason hype. Now, let's play the games.

springlions, this is RBI i just found the password to my newer account, so this is me. I forgot, our coach told us about you guys too. Our Former asst. coach graduated from spring. The first tournaments should make or break our season, well atleast let us know where we stand. they told us that we had high expectations but i didnt know we were #7.. and yeah..the woodlands are very good. i saw them here in round rock at the dell last season vs. katy. what a great thing to live here, i get to see the championships every year. they lost some seniors but of course, their gonna be good. midland lee is in the rockhardball tournament, we play them.

I am not familiar enough with SLC to know about Cunningham. I will say that I saw Chase Reid throw a perfect game at the Connie Mack Regional against a VERY good DBAT 17u team. He was completely dominant. As I recall nobody even got a good swing. I know that some would choose CG or BB, but I'll take me some CR any day.

Joe Leftridge is the fastest player in 5A baseball. End of discussion.

Zach Neal is FM's #1. I am guessing Bobby Doran is #2.

MeatsDad - Thanks for the unraveling the mystery.

Uncle E, what can you tell us about Boddy Doran? At last years, Lewisville / FM play-in I talked to a few FM dads that told me about a kid they had that had a 90+ fastball and did a little relief for them but couldn't get into the starting rotation because of Ryan and Neal. Is Bobby that pitcher?

Does anyone know the Bi-District playoff structure for this year? i.e. the first seed from 6-5A plays the four seed from 5-5A ?
KG -- we expected your post a bit earlier. Smile And, for what's it worth....it's just for fun and conversation. Thanks for keeping everyone grounded. Big Grin

I want to re-iterate...there are many young players that will have an impact in 2007 -- sophomores and a few freshmen, I'm sure. I haven't done much research, but DFW may have the most talented SO class in many years. But HS baseball is different from summer baseball in many respects (good and/or bad). Teams that play into May are generally (note GENERALLY) led by a strong group of seniors.

Is the Train mystery unraveling?...just as we doubted our previous suspicions!

Train -- has your son made a college commitment? -- plans to join his bro a few hours west perhaps?

MeatsDad,
From the writings of the great Jason Becker of Inside Prep Baseball at the Area Code Tryouts in College Station in June 2006:

Bobby Doran
2007
Flower Mound
RHP
6-6, 210, R/R
Velocity: 88-89 MPH fastball; 70-73 MPH curveball; 80 MPH changeup
Notes: Doran did not look as far along as some of the other pitchers at the camp, particularly spinning the breaking ball, but he is a big, strong pitcher with a loose arm and plenty of velocity. He is absolutely a pitcher to keep an eye on in the spring. Lots of upside.

This analysis is consistent with what I have seen first hand, as well. By the way, for those that don't subscribe to Jason's website, check out www.insideprepbaseball.com as he does a very good job of covering the game for a very reasonable price.

The 90+ FM player you are talking about from last year is Barrett Bruce. He was drafted by the Yankees in the 28th round. The last I heard he is pitching at Navarro College.

Since I don't know players outside of D/FW, I couldn't go that far, but I would say he's the fastest player in D/FW.

And it's just not his speed, it's his jump on the ball and how smooth he is in the outfield and the bases.

Maybe this summer we can get DBat GM to arrange a race between Slater, Miller and Leftridge. Would be fun to watch at least. Big Grin

UNCLE ETHAN....I spoke to a couple of FM faithful and lets just say if he hit 88-89 with a FB...the gun was jammed or it multipled the reading x 2. He pitched against SLC I believe and is a tall kid but has no speed at all for that frame. Was told more like 78-81 tops.

Makes me wonder about the credibility about the magazine. If thats #2 they are in trouble. Most likely the sophmore will step in (cant think of his name now).

A fraction of the price(1/3 to be exact) of subscribing to websites that might have a story every once in a while.

Think I'd have to go with Miller...

Hands down, Leftridge is the fastest kid I've seen either on a sprint or around the bases.

This kid has world class speed. Mark that.

As much as I'd like to add to the drama and give you my top 10, I can't/won't.

1. Due to the fact I have not coached since the summer before last, my knowledge of kids in our area is very limited.

2. I never have been the one to put too much stock in ranking high school teams. When you have a 30+- game schedule it's very hard to determine who might have the better team. When you get to district, there are only 2 games a week. If you have a dominant arm, how can you accurately rank a team.

Example - When Kershaw pitched last year, I would rank HP #1. When he didn't pitch, I wouldn't have put them in the top #25.

Now that's my opinion only.

But to be frank, it don't make a hill a beans on any of the ranking stuff in my opinion.

Personally I think it's a waste of time and effort for anyone to attempt to rank amatuer sports. Adults should understand that our youth are so unpredictable and that ranking them is like our local weather forecasts.

If we, as adults, put as much focus on the important things amatuer sports have to offer versus who is #1, I believe it would benefit our kids a little more than some glorified ego boosting poll.

But, since we are talking about the real world here, there will always be a group (cough cough) that will get their thrills from speculating on what team will beat what team. And what #2 is better than the other #2. Roll Eyes

Bottom line...............................

Who cares..............................

I don't. I just enjoy watching good baseball and hope that some good kids get the opportunity to continue playing this game.

And........for that matter...........there is a reason I'm sitting in my home office vs. in a coaching office. Wink

Cool your jets, young'un. I said nothing derogatory about anyone. Just paid a compliment to Miller, who has some serious wheels himself.

Jets haven't even been turned on..............

Just stating the truth.

No, just stating your opinion. The truth would have numbers with it.
Ken,

You sure get upset when people start talking about who can beat who. I guess in your world it would be best if we didn't keep score, just play seven and watch the skilled youngsters. Well, I think since we do keep score....we might as well teach our kids how to battle and try to achieve victory. Good athletes are quite often good salesman....because they learned to compete. Real world stuff my friend! Big Grin
And the idea that you are some sort of superior baseball "purist" because you discard the concept of rankings is somewhat offensive....even if it is true based on other criteria. (Sorry, I've been writing legal language this morning and my mind is mush.) I love the things amateur sports offers -- that's why one could argue that they control our lives.

Ken --- come see Slater, Emens, and other energetic Panthers play the game this spring! Cool

TB-D -- I still like the way you think. Is Northwest in the Arlington Martin tourney this year?

Rockwall had a pretty good tussle with the Eagles last year during the regular season and the playoffs. OP son had 2 losses for the Jackets last year and they were both to Rowlett. One in the reg. season and one in the playoffs.

If my memory serves me correctly, one of the JV games last year, the score was something like 16-15, so this years games will be pretty interesting.

Ringer,

It is fun to watch how some of these posts take so many turns. From time to time, it's like that hill in San Francisco that turns a 100 times ! But it's a heck of a good time.
