DOC,
I agree with you. Best I can say is have at least 3 pitches you can throw for strikes, good velocity and you're good to go.
AMEN To That TPM!

Sure this is a repeat, but good time to read it again.

I have never thought of a groundball or weak pop fly ball as an out pitch; I guess it is. I consider an out pitch, one that causes the batter to get out without contact. To me, a changeup is a "get-out-of-trouble-pitch". As CHICKS said on page #1, it may leave the park faster than it came in.
Any pitch may leave the park faster than it came in.
My son often uses his c/u as a "get the batter in trouble" pitch.

I think the most effective use of the CU is to use it when the batter least expects it, not when you HAVE to. Mine uses it on a first pitch sometimes and can go out of the park just as easily as any other pitch. I think his only HR last year was on a change up. I think it is his best pitch, and because he is able to change speeds effectively he relies on it and not afraid to use it, as many are, because they are too busy worrying about curves, sliders and velocity in HS.
On the next level, especially in the tougher conferences, anyone can hit the 90+ fastball.
The smart pitcher uses his pitches, no matter if it is 3 or 7 to confuse the hitter, get ahead in the count or forces the play with a ground ball for the out.
Some pitchers with 90+ are extremely effective with fastball after fastball, slider after slider with movement. However, he'll never be able to start a game or if he does, not last too long. That's ok, but the HS starter who could strike everyone out with is FB or curve, slider might have to go through some type of shock before he realizes that's what the hitters have for breakfst.
If you want your son to play in college , make sure he is taught the FB and change effectively, the coach will help him to master and use other pitches. If, he is coachable.
