Getting second guessed is part of being a coach, I know that and accept that. No one second guesses me more than myself, and no one ever will. I have lost many nights of sleep wondering if I would have done something different would it have made a difference?

I will speak for myself, but no one feels worse than I do when we lose. There is always something I could have done differently to have the kids more prepared mentally and or physically. It is my responsiblity as the head coach to see that this happens. When it does not, I take full responsiblity and the kids that I coach know that.

I like to think of myself as a cup is half full type of person when I am off the field. But as a coach, I see things as the cup is half empty and how in the world can I get it full! I think most coaches think this way and use "coach talk" to express it. I am rambling now and should stop. clever

FD -- I know for a fact that our coach spends many hours second-guessing himself, like you do. I, for one, hopes he continues to let others drive the bus home after games ---- he's too busy replaying the game in his head to focus on the road. You make a good point and one that parents do not consider as they should ---- most HS coaches hate to lose almost as much as I do! Smile

What team is your son playing for this Summer? I gather by some of your posts he is a 16U? Thanks, J

You are correct, he is playing on a 16U team. We will be playing some 16, 17 & 18U tournaments though. His team is called Frozen Ropes Blue Sox 16U and we will be playing in the BBI Premier League. He is also going to go to a couple of tournaments with DBAT's 16U team as well. Should be a busy summer for sure with a lot of games in a short amount of time!!

PD & FD,

It is my contention that if you polled all coaches in all sports, you would find that they can tell you a lot more about the games they lost than the one's they won.

Vanlandingham

I agree with PD, you are not a fool. My point was to our specific team and behind the scene information. With all the questions about our games during the playoffs, some don't ever see the good. These were mature young men who are far from perfect but took care of business themselves. My son even recevied a note from one of the seniors telling him it was his honor to play with my son, after my son told him the same after the game Saturday. To me, that's a sign of maturity and mutual respect.

As far as Vance34, my match time was a long time ago, I just observe from a corner of the stands.

Coach V.

Would you rather have
Passionate ignorant parents, or parents that did not care at all?

Isn't it amazing the time, passion, energy, (you add the word) that we put into baseball. Rather than family, work, 401-K, (you add the word). Baseball almost cost me a marriage and a family.

I have always appreciated the passion that the coaches that have coached my sons have had. The good has outweighed the bad, but sometimes I wonder if we all have our priorities a little skewed... Roll Eyes

Vanlandingham,
Would you Choose to leave your son on a summer team for 4 years that was coached by someone who you disagreed with their basic coaching philosophy to teach him adversity? If not then why shouldn't parents have the right to question coaches, as long as it is done constructively, when they don't have the option to move to another high school team if not in agreement with the respective coach?

Are you looking for another HS? I can suggest one for you which will play against FM next year and ours sons can share more than the summer? Can you guess which one? Big Grin PS We have a better coach! Razz
Van...I love your Passion!!! passion makes for a better player & team most of the time. Keep it up! Cool

Crawdad ...I agree with you about letting the boys become men and not holding their hands forever and let little Johnny make his own bed..etc...etc.

I dont think you meant the "P" word cause if you did KD will get you! Rumor has it he makes good chesseburgers! Wink
Sorry about the use of the "P" word - when I was growing up back in the last century that was the worst thing you could call a boy growing up. It is probably not used anymore. I am going to start my sensitivity training (on line of course) sometime next month if I get around to it.

I feel really bad for using that word...actually I don't - but I feel like I should say I do.
