No one in a million years thought Young would advance past Mount Carmel in the Sectional. This was the biggest upset of the state playoffs! On Monday night under the lights at Crestwood-Hawkinson, Ford Field it is the Super Sectional Game with Young (25-9-1) going up against vaunted St. Rita (33-6). These two teams have yet to meet. They were to have met earlier in the season, but Rain kept the games from happening.

If you are interested in reading my report on Young's 2-0 Big Win over Mount Carmel you will find it within the IHSA Scores thread-Page 6. Don't want to double up on the postings! The Moderators watch out for that kind of stuff. I guess it causes trouble.

Anyway, there are patterns in every game and it is always more interesting when you look at it backwards so my summary always looks for those backmasked subliminal messages that are always sure to be there.

It has been a fun ride. Mount Carmel did not show me anything special. They have a flashy pre-game warmup and are an OK team with some size, but Young made the defensive plays behind Freidman and in my opinion the better talent won today. I expect Young to be ranked after this big win.

The Dolphins should not expect any respect in the next one and no doubt there is a lot of talent at Rita. They pulled it out against St. Lawrence after trailing for most of that game. I spoke with someone from Lawrence a few days ago who shared with me that they would fear an athletic team such as Young. I am not sure what that exactly meant........there was probably some masked message in that one. Baseball is a head game for sure.

We will enjoy this win and then have to wait and see.......Tomorrow Never Knows.

No matter which way it goes I will share the results with you.

The Sunday Chicago Sun Times gives good coverage to yesterdays AA Sectional games. Coach Chris Cassidy is quoted as saying....."This is a huge step for the Chicago Public League. No one has gotten here yet and we want to go all the way."

The Chicago Tribune hardly picks anything up, but does give mention to the St. Rita game. Young gets no respect. Kinda surprising since these are Chicago teams, but let there be no doubt that Rita tops the bill. In the Sun Times it pronounces, "Freidman Strikes Again" as the Headline. Read the story on page 65A Sports.

In the Rita game Sophomore Angelo Burrage (Clubbers-Chicago elite alum) is given his due for smashing a 3 run homer in the sixth inning. The kid can play and I guess he was one of those "athletic" type players that the Lawrence guy told me he feared. With good reason! The Chicago Tribune has already knighted him as the St. Rita poster child.

You better believe it when some Paperback Writer comes up with that kinda stuff.

It was a big inning for Rita as the Mustangs scored six runs in a big sixth inning and three of them came off one swing of the bat that then had Lawrence reeling. Can you believe it? A Chicago urban player saved the day as the Mustangs came back in dramatic fashion to knock out St. Lawrence. The next time Burrage came up to the plate he was intentionally walked. I have seen this kid play for five years and he is the real deal and a difference maker.

You might be out doing some Sunday driving.....but you better believe it! The loser is going home.

WOW! Illinois High School baseball, it sure beats watching the Cubs Slugfest!

Hey Young supporters we need all of you tomorrow in Crestwood. The field is located on 141st Street, just East of Cicero Avenue in Crestwood, IL.

Game time is 6:30 pm. An earlier game precedes our game.

Show up and let them know you care. Bring the whole family and get their early and let them hear your support. For sure it will be a circus tomorrow night and Rita gets all the top billing. They will have their celebrated thrower and there will be lots of carnival noise and the organ will be playing loud all night.

Remember that it matters not what we did against Clemente, Lane or Mount Carmel. Yesterday does not count as what matters now is only what you can do tomorrow. So who is it going to be? Who wants it more? Who is going to step up and make it happen?

The pressure is all on them. You are from the CPL and you were not even supposed to be here! So relax and have plenty of fun. No CPL team has ever gotten this far before. Play loose and remember that there are only 16 teams left and after tomorrow night it will only be eight left standing. Good things happen to those who wait and just maybe it might be your grandest night of the season.

There are many reasons that Young is not mentioned as a part of the Illinois baseball elite. You haven't proven anything. But someday, someway, I know that is all going to change. But we need all of you to step up to make history happen. It makes no difference that you won the City Championship at the top two levels. That does not count in anyone’s mind and besides that was all in the past. It matters not that you proved that you could win at Wrigley or at Northeastern Illinois University or even at Mount Carmel’s place. Once again that was all Yesterday. What matters now is tomorrow.

If you need some motivation read some of the threads on this web site. Squint hard to read the words and remember what they think. Read the words and then understand the message behind the message and what is really being said. CPL……for many it could not get more worse!

Now go out and prove something tomorrow night and just maybe……….

I think that when the Burrage's see you at the game on monday , that will give them even more incentive than he/they already have . Not sure you are taking the right approach here. Burrage deserves all the ink he has gotten . CLEARLY one of the top sophs in the state . W.Y. could be in for a long day . But hats off to making it this far.
Sully, right on the money. Burrage is a very talented player. One of the best 09 hitters in the state. I'm sure if the Burrage family runs into Ormond tomorrow they would look the other way like most people would. The Burrage family got away from Ormond years ago. St. Rita will mop up Whitney Young tomorrow. Congrats to the seniors at Whitney Young on a good run throughout the post season though.
Dave,

There is no argument from me on the talent and potential of Burrage. You either misinterpret the post or you are looking to spin this thread in another direction. So to clarify this for you, Burrage is among the best in state. I saw him last week at Brooks and pleasantries were exchanged.

After our Mount Carmel game ended we heard that Rita was chasing Lawrence and needed a miracle. So without his bat we are playing St. Lawrence instead of Rita. That is both relevant and of great interest. He saved them from disaster. Can he do it again? A bigger stadium tonight, so can anyone knock one out? The Hawkinson stadium has a seating capacity of 3,200 people, including two luxury suites, a picnic deck in the right field corner and a lawn area along the left field line. It is the only minor league baseball stadium in the Chicago area with an upper deck. So once again I do not know if anyone reaches the fences.

It is clearly a big game coming up for both teams. Young plays hard and who knows what happens next. The degree of separation is not that great and all of the pressure is going to be on Rita. This is it...and it is do or die and there is no tomorrow!

We will just have to wait and see! I expect a good game from both teams. All of you have been wishing for a blowout and that Young gets their brains beat out since early May, so I can read between the lines. Then I know that you will be itching to say, "I told you so."

This is a very young team with lots of upside and plenty of talent that is just coming up. No matter what happens I predict this is not the last time we are in the Super Sectionals. I was right so far and I can assure you that this is no one time flash in the pan.

Young meets Notre Dame in the summer league. I look forward to seeing you. Maybe you can mop us up then! I just checked the calendar and we play at your place on Wednesday, June 20 and then you visit our field on Friday, July 13 just before the IHSA Summer League playoffs begin.

How about, I bring the bucket and you bring the mop.

Im not hoping for a blowout loss for Young , just suggesting they could be in for a long day depending on which Rita team shows up . Im sure they are not going to take W.Y. lightly . As far as summer ball is concerned , its not nearly as competitive as regular season with coaches more inclined to be taking a look at incoming juniors and even a few sophs . Winning not a priority for most. Would rather see a good ballgame than mopping up .
My take on this thread, why the gamesmanship ie. "the pressure is on St. Rita." No, the pressure is on BOTH TEAMS SINCE THE LOSER IS DONE FOR THE SEASON. When you mention "read between the lines," I see you trying to use this site to get inside the head of St. Rita players and, again, my impression, the head of their sophomore pitcher. Perhaps I've misread these various threads but that is my take. I don't understand! Congratulation to Whitney Young for their sectional accomplishment and good luck in the future.

IN POSTS SUCH AS YOUR PREVIOUS TO GET FANS OUT, I HOPE THAT IT GETS FANS OUT FOR BOTH TEAMS FOR THE GOOD OF OUR SPORT. St. Rita fans, in Mark's way, he has challenged you to meet his call as well since the implication is that he is trying to "pack the place" EARLY with Whitney Young fans. I'm looking forward to the results of this game.

If I were in the neighborhood I'd be sure to attend. I plan on going to the Chatham-Glenwood vs Edwardsville game. This will be at GCS Stadium in Sauget, Illinois. It also is a minor league park. I saw a ball fly out of there once in a Super Sectional game that ended the careers of some seniors that I love and care for. Many teams tonight will share the same fate.

We will take all the support we can get. This game is for all the marbles and the winner advances to the Elite Eight. The season is on the line and the loser goes home.

I am not sure how many times I must explain myself before you will really understand. I do not accept average. Never did, never will. Are the Young Dolphins overachievers or are they just that good? I think they are that good and I have said that all season long.

Are we the underdogs? Absolutely! St. Rita represents Illinois baseball royalty and we want to be sitting in that chair. So now we will see what happens.

Anyway, my chair is on the side of Whitney Young. We are striving to be among the baseball elite. If you are not a part of the elite then as far as I am concerned you are just average. When I brought Jason to Young I made my points absolutely clear to Dr. Kenner and Coach Cassidy. I took a risk and said what was on my mind. I know from many years of running teams how many people are whispering things under their breath and trying to undermine. Try to run a travel team with baseball parents working against you every step of the way. A long time ago someone told me that the best teams were those that wre made up with orphans and no parents to meddle. The same absolutely goes for a high school team whether it be baseball, basketball or otherwise.

Anyway Young understands excellence and I belive they understood me when I told them straight away that I wanted to see excellence on the baseball field and not just excellence in the classroom. My standards are high and I am not afraid to critically evaluate. In my opinion all of these kids have got a bright future ahead of them, and I wanted only the best. You tell me what parent doesn't?

Interestingly, Michael Jordan says much of the same thing about his son Marcus. Read the Chicago Tribune Sports section today. It is front page Chicago Tribune sports news and the article continues on to Page 7.

On Marcus attending Whitney Young......

Marcus is going to Whitney Young. That is something we agreed to. That's something he wanted to do......It is his choice......whatever he wanted to do. As long as the school is strong academically......academics is what we really try to drive home for our kids. The basketball is going to be there......He has got a lot of potential ahead of him as well. It is good to have a big brother ahead of him as well to take some of the pressure off. But he is going to be OK."

P.S. Chicago-Clubbers Elite Basketball played this weekend and had a respectable 2-1 showing in their first tournament. The team is presently being coached by Young Basketball Coach Kevin Snyder. Sophomore basketball standout Frank Gowder anchors the team.

Wow, they're getting started early burning up those 25 contact days. Most of our events are mid-July.
YO Mark.....you dont accept average??? Please....you pompass tw..t...define average.....a top level MLB average is what??...below average...or are you just speaking metaphorically (sic).....how would your conversation wiht Rod Carew go?.....maybe average is the best someone has...how about best effort.....why do i read that all of the great soph. players all came from your "program"....what happened to that "program"...thats right, no $$$$ for the disenfranchised.....as if they are the only sophs to make an impact...i will argue that this time next year you may well be talking about some jr. that is far and away better than all your little clubbers...so....take you bow and shut up already...
Anyone know what is going on with these games?

Lots of Rain and I would think a postponement is coming.

RAIN has perfectly magical lyrics that foretold the coming revolution of the Beatles music. The song is often overlooked but is one of the greats. Every player needs a change of scenery. No one can take credit for talent as it is the culmination of ability and many years of hard work.

Too long in any one place is never a good thing.

He is doing great and very happy for Angelo.

The new number # 8 was Jo Jo Moldonado.

Both are top of the chart Class of 2009 players. The raw talent has always been there for both.

Lots of those high priced Cubs will likely be heading for a change of scenery and a new place.

Change....often is difficult to accept, but more often than not can be a very good thing!

We now will promote the entire 5 year Clubber-Chicago roster. Over the years we have had many top notch and talented players wearing our uniform and their stars are now just beginning to shine.

Good luck and best wishes to all.

Mark, I coached basketball for 18 years. As a varsity assistant, I went to state 4 times. RESPECTFULLY - NOPE! However, I might make it back into the basketball coaching ranks but in girl's basketball. We are having a hard time finding some coaches since we've had so many retire and so, I might be "asked" to coach basketball again.

MR. M.O. The cheerleading you are going on with is a bit over the top. I assume you have some vested interest in WY playing and winning this game. As you know in baseball, teams of similar talent can at any time beat the other. A loss today doesn't define which team is better than the other to any degree -- other than just today. Perhaps a 7 game series might be more appropriate for that. Since they don't have those in high school baseball; you'll have a winner and a loser nothing more. What matters is the team that meets ALL the challenges and becomes state champion. That team, sir, will have proved something !

By the way, my 13 year old (at the time-2 years ago) played your Clubber team. You must have went to the "Lou P." school of umpire abuse. Our kids found it amusing though.
Elliot Greenhill has made a nice name for himself in the playoffs. He was one of the better hitters I saw this year. Big lefty who swings with bad intentions, stands way up in the box and right on top of the plate. He tore his knee in a bad accident vs. a fence? and missed most of JR. year.

This should be interesting!

3-2 Final or 4-2? Either way a great game.

Congrats to Rita on the big win, good luck in Joliet.

Congrats to WY on playing inspired baseball over the past couple weeks. You had my respect and I think now you will have the rest of the states respect as well. Great season Coach Cassidy and the Dolphins.

I've always kind of pulled for CPL Teams, back from when Clemente used to comeout and play against my older son at Barrington. I've not been a big fan of the Chicago Catholic League due to the simple fact they can take players from just about anywhere they want.

Maybe it was Ormand, but for the first time ever I felt myself pulling for St. Rita tonight.....you know sometimes you don't have a dog in the fight but you end up pulling for one or the other...who knows why?
