Wood bat safer...end of story.
What a great play.

That's AL MA 08's kid.
From the Vanderbilt baseball website ....
He will have surgery back at Vanderbilt early this week and is out for the year.
From tonight's webcast ....
The surgery was successful without complications.

AL MA, I'm sure you are very proud of your boy. Best wishes for a quick and complete recovery!!
That is crazy. Wood bat or not, there are times when you just can't get out of the way. I remember pitching when I was 16 and had a line drive hit off my collar bone... our CF caught it in the air for an out. Of course he was playing shallow.
Maybe pitchers should wear helmets like they do in men's slow pitch softball!

At U13 (but a small field), one of my son's former teammates was pitching and took line drive in the crotch. The kid picked up the ball, threw it to first, and then lost consciousness. They had to bring a helicopter for him. Luckily he was fine...
Tonight I saw an umpire take a line drive off the back and shake it off like it was nothing. Really hard hit ball, too...

AL MA 08,
So sorry to learn of your son's season ending injury. As memorable and spectacular the play was, it is a huge price to pay.
My best wishes to your family and your awesome son and prayers for a complete speedy recovery!

Thanks for your encouragement, thoughts and prayers. It was really difficult to watch him try to move without much success right after he was hit. At this point we are relieved it was not more serious than it certainly could have been. The knee-cap took the brunt of the force of the ball's impact.
Tell your son there are lots of posters here sending best wishes for a speedy recovery. So sorry it had to happen, especially at this point in the season. This is a film clip that will be replayed for a long time. The true definition of a "gamer". Probably learned all he knows from Dad?
Best wishes to Alma08's son... may he have a speedy recovery...

Corey is becoming famous. The announcer on the webcast last night said it's one of the most watched online videos. I'll bet he'd trade a little fame for getting back on the mound. But when it's his draft time the scouts don't have to ask about his toughness and competitiveness.quote:This is a film clip that will be replayed for a long time.
Corey had MUCH rather be going back on the mound this weekend than have any amount of popularity on the WEB. I guess this maight be considered a “little” silver lining to the cloud that just fell over him. He was interviewed on ESPN yesterday. I hope these type of distractions help keep his attitude in the right place so he can finish this semester of school. It is going to be toughest on him to watch the bus pull out for the next road trip if he is left behind.
I get the idea that we'll be seeing this play again at the end of the year when the best plays of 2010 comes out.
That's gotta be one of the best play's I've ever seen.
Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

WOW... add my wishes for a speedy recovery as well!
When my son asked if I saw Mark Buehrle's play my response was, "Big deal! Watch this one!" He was awed Corey had the presence of mind to find the ball. It should be in this week's web gems.quote:That's gotta be one of the best play's I've ever seen.
AL MA 08,
All my best for your son to get the very best medical treatment, to have his doctors be on their A game when they treat him, and for a full recovery.
From parents perspective, you are very astute. You are right to pay close attention to the mental side. These are highly competitive kids. Hopefully his recovery will go smoothly and that will be a huge help for him mentally.
He may need some pick me ups here and there from our experience.
You are so right to already be alert and watching.

I was watching the game when he got hit. I had no idea he was your son. I felf so bad for him and I know he was in tremendous pain. I can not imagine how scared you guys were for him. I am very glad he is going to be Ok. He is a very talented young man and I will be praying for his full recovery from the injury.
